Crystals provide a wonderful way to enhance your complementary practices. You can use them to magnify the energy you send to others, or simply keep them around for the benefits they provide to particular chakras. However, not all crystals are equal in their effect on wellbeing; amazingly, only 1% of gemstones have true therapeutic qualities. This short guide will help you to select the most effective stones for your wellness.

Type – not all stones have meaningful energetic properties. Additionally, it can sometimes be difficult to verify that a particular stone is what the seller says it is. Don’t cut corners in doing your research, and keep a gem guide with you while shopping for crystals.

Shape – the shape of a crystal has a big effect on its healing properties. Crystal chips are effective, but their shape can hide imperfection in the quality of the gemstone. Spherical or ‘rondel’ shapes are preferable, because you can fully evaluate the quality of the crystal. Rounded gemstones have the best healing properties, as their energies can radiate in all directions.

Colour – the price of gemstones is largely influenced by their colour. If you are looking for therapeutic-quality stones you need to look out for a rich, even colour with a nice tone. Avoid anything that looks too dark, or washed-out. Bear in mind that this is just a general tip, and remember to check out the colour varieties of the particular gemstone in your guide book.

Clarity – an essential criterion for determining quality, clarity is the evaluation of flaws inside a gemstone. As a rule, the more transparent the crystal the better, but a fully transparent stone is a very rare find. Flaws, or ‘inclusions’ are perfectly okay in certain gemstones, but should be avoided in others. A case in point is that of Blue Sapphire, which must be entirely free of cracks or inclusions.

Size – where size is concerned, the larger the better if you want to take advantage of healing properties in the crystals. Sometimes, it is appropriate to compromise on quality in order to get a stone of a suitable size.

Authenticity – the determinant of authenticity is that a stone is entirely natural and has not been treated in any way by the seller. You should be vigilant about this, as some sellers treat their stones in order to achieve a better price.

Brightness – the brightness of a stone relates to how the light plays through it. This criterion relates to clarity, and you can expect a transparent stone to have a better level of brightness. As always, refer to your guidebook to find the specific requirements according to stone type.
