Pregnancy is one of the most precious times in a woman’s life. It’s also one of the most nerve-racking even for those who have done it before. Just as every woman is different, every pregnancy is as well, so it is important that everyone involved be prepared and on the same page. The OBGYN is going to be a large part of that process. Asking the following questions can help ensure that no matter what happens, everyone’s expectations will be met.

What is your ideology on the pregnancy and birthing process?

Knowing how the OBGYN handles the pregnancy and birthing process in advance will save on unwanted surprises throughout the entire experience. One thing to talk about is whether they prefer to use medical technology from the start or if they let things move along naturally unless there is a problem. Find out how often appointments are and if they will include teaching about parenting along with the prenatal care. The relationship between expecting mother and doctor should be open and bring comfort and trust to any situation that may arise.

How much and what kind of experience do you have?

The last thing a woman in labor wants to find out is that her doctor doesn’t have a whole lot of experience. Also, it is important to know what kinds of issues the OBGYN has dealt with in other pregnancies. Things to find out are the doctor’s induction rates and how many high-risk or special needs patients have been treated. Knowing the history of the doctor will allow the mother to be assured that no matter what arises during pregnancy or delivery she is in capable hands. For women with high-risk pregnancies, it’s important to work with a maternal-fetal specialist like Dr. Gilbert Webb.

How can I keep in contact with you?

Issues can come up during pregnancies that cannot wait until the next appointment to discuss. In these instances, women should know how and when they can speak to their doctor. Some are on call, others have someone to cover for them if they are unavailable and yet others use email to communicate between appointments. How contact will be made once labor begins should also be in place well beforehand.

What can I expect at delivery?

So many things will be happening at such a quick rate once the mother is in labor. Knowing what to expect beforehand can help take some of the stress out of an already stressful situation. Things to discuss include which hospital the OBGYN delivers at, if or when they will perform an episiotomy, will the doctor induce and at what point, and what pain management techniques can be expected.

What happens after the baby is here?

Once the baby is born, the relationship between mother and doctor is not over. Patients will remain in the hospital until released by the OBGYN. As the amount of time differs, it should be discussed with the doctor so that arrangements can be made. As most doctors will schedule at least one postpartum appointment to make sure the vaginal area is healing properly and that there are no complications, the mother should find out at what point she will be going back to her primary care doctor.

Every woman has their own idea on how they would like their pregnancy and delivery to go. Bringing a baby into the world is a team effort so communication becomes key in making the experience as pleasant as possible. Speaking to the doctor and making sure that everyone knows what to expect from each other can help mothers-to-be have a sense of control and comfort throughout the entire birthing process.

Pregnancy is an exciting time in any woman’s life. However, it does come with some mild discomforts like nausea and swollen feet, for many. Some women find themselves in high-risk pregnancies where they must be extra careful to avoid potential complications. Sometimes a pregnancy becomes risky for no apparent reason, but often it is due to genetic causes or the mother’s health. For example, some women are prone to premature labor or have an incompetent cervix, both of which can lead to a preterm birth, a baby with health issues, or even miscarriage or stillbirth. Moms-to-be with diabetes, heart problems, cancer, or other illnesses may be more likely to have a high risk pregnancy.

There are many things a woman can do to protect herself and their baby in a high-risk pregnancy. First and foremost is that she should consult a high-risk pregnancy specialist who will hopefully treat her during pregnancy and deliver the baby when it arrives. Following the doctor’s orders is paramount to a safe pregnancy. Good nutrition is important. The doctor may place the mom-to-be on a special diet or merely suggest that she follow a healthy diet and not overeat. Although most pregnant women can exercise safely, high-risk pregnancy specialist Dr. Gilbert Webb says it’s recommended for women who are at risk to talk to their doctor before starting an exercise program. Any unusual symptoms should be reported to the doctor right away.

Medical Care

In addition to seeing her high-risk specialist on schedule, the mom-to-be should follow all instructions precisely. Typically this includes taking prenatal vitamins and having periodic ultrasounds performed according to the doctor’s orders to check the baby’s health and development. If the doctor orders bed rest for the mother’s high blood pressure, she should stay off her feet to help treat the problem and prevent it from becoming worse. An attentive doctor will help to relieve the patient’s worries and keep her informed about her baby’s development. A delivery plan will be recommended early in the pregnancy so the mom-to-be can make advance preparations.

Dental Care

For a mother-to-be, taking care of the teeth is almost as important as caring for her body. Since the baby is leaching calcium from the mother’s bones and teeth, she may experience loose teeth or even lose one without adequate dental care. The dentist should be told as soon as possible that the mom-to-be patient is expecting so dental care can be adjusted accordingly. Some dentists want to see their pregnant patients more regularly to closely monitor their dental care. In a high-risk pregnancy, this may be the case. Daily brushing and flossing are an essential part of self-care that the pregnant woman must follow to guard her health.

Family Support

During a high-risk pregnancy, a mother-to-be needs family support more than ever. She might experience anxiety or depression, and she might even feel angry about her condition. A close-knit support system of family members and friends will provide the comfort, support, and guidance she needs during this potentially difficult period in her life. Her partner, or other relatives can help by taking her to and from doctor appointments, cooking meals, watching older children, or running errands to remove some of the pressure the mom-to-be may be experiencing. Showing their love and support in these ways reminds the pregnant woman that she is not alone, and that others care about her and will help her.

Although a high-risk pregnancy may sound scary, it is quite manageable when the mother-to-be takes control of her condition and networks with the important pillars of her experience. Self-care, medical care, dental care, and family support make a difference.

BJP MP Hema Malini, who was discharged from a Jaipur hospital after her Mercedes collided with another car leaving a child dead and injuring four others, has offered financial assistance to families of the victims.

The 66-year-old actor-politician reached Mumbai by a chartered plane, accompanied by her daughter Esha Deol and son-in-law Bharat Takhtani.

Talking to reporters outside Hema Malini’s residence in Juhu, Esha said, “My mother will help the families of victims. She is doing this not because she is a neta (leader) but because she is a good human being as well.”

On Thursday night, the car in which Hema Malini was travelling rammed into another car coming from the opposite direction in Dausa district of Rajasthan, killing a two-year-old girl and leaving four others injured.

Jab accident hua tab mummy ki jo condition thi wo kisi aur ke baare me kaise soch sakti thi. Koi bhi nahi soch pa raha tha, par hame afsos hai us pariwar ne apna khoya hai (When the accident took place, my mother as well as the family was not in a condition to comprehend anything but we are sad that a family has lost a dear one),” Esha said.

“When the accident happened she was asleep. She had told everyone to wear their seat belts. But achanak picche se jor ka dhakka laga (suddenly we felt jolt from the rear side),” she said.

“The accident was very bad. It was traumatic so no one was in a state to talk or think anything,” she said. Esha informed that Hema Malini has been advised rest for now.

“Doctors have asked her to take rest at home. She is a bit better now. She is fine. She wants to rest now. She is not meeting anyone. She will relax for a day or two and then she will meet (people),” she added.

The actress, who was discharged from hospital, had undergone a surgery for her wounds at the Fortis hospital. She was also treated for a minor fracture on her nose.

His watch may not have ended just yet. Game of Thrones fans, who are secretly harbouring hopes that Jon Snow’s character will somehow be revived, can take heart from latest pictures of the Kit Harington at Wimbledon with his signature long hair and beard intact, nearly a month since the season five finale.

The 28-year-old looked dapper in a navy suit as he sat in the royal box on Day 4 of the tennis championship during the women’s singles’ match on July 2.

In an interview to New York Daily News, the actor had earlier said that he was contractually obligated to not cut his hair while he appeared on the series. Infact, it was his appearance at the premiere of his film Testament of Youth with a shorter hairdo in January that had sparked rumours of his tragic end in season five. But now, with the show’s young ‘Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch’, once again sporting long hair, Game of Thrones fans have got their hopes up once more.

In an interview to MTV News, Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, disclosed there was a chance that John Snow could return.

“I’d say there’s a 50/50 chance. I mean, there’s some helpful people there who could bring him back to life,” Clarke said teasing the theory that the priestess Melisandre could be instrumental in bringing Jon Snow back to life,” she said.

In the book series, Jon Snow dies in the fifth instalment but since author George R R Martin is still writing the books, fans of the show have fingers crossed for a revival.

Kit Harington has become a walking spoiler.

Many people want to lose weight for aesthetic reasons, but there is more to maintaining a healthy weight than looking good. Perhaps you should be more concerned about the risks to your health, and especially to your heart.

How Weight Can Cause Heart Problems

There are many ways that being overweight can have a negative effect on your heart. One of the biggest risk factors for the heart is heart disease. When you are overweight, the extra weight can put a strain on the heart, increasing your risk of heart disease.

Extra weight around the waist can be particularly risky because midsection fat is different from other fat in the body. Visceral fat is particularly bad for the heart, especially in women. Even dropping as few as 10 pounds can lower your risk of heart disease, so if you are currently overweight, now is the time to act.

Cholesterol is another risk factor for heart disease if it becomes too high. If you have too much in your blood, it can build up in the arteries, causing them to narrow. This slows the blood flow to the heart, which can cause serious problems.

Cholesterol can be especially problematic because you may not be aware that it is high, so check your cholesterol levels every few years. You don’t need to be overweight to have high cholesterol, but being overweight can certainly make it worse.

High blood pressure can also become worse if you are overweight. This can increase the risk of coronary heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. You can easily get your blood pressure measured, and if it is too high, you should do something about it. Although being overweight can affect blood pressure, eating too much salt and not doing enough activity can also affect it.

If you are overweight, you may have a faster heart rate because the heart has to work harder to pump blood around your body. Over time, this can cause the muscles of the heart to thicken, known as hypertrophy, and this can lead to heart failure.

Are You Overweight?

Work out your Body Mass Index (BMI) to find out if you are overweight. You can do this by using a simple calculation:

  • Find out your weight in pounds

  • Multiply it by 703

  • Divide this by your height in inches

  • And then divide once more by the same number

The ideal BMI is between 19 and 25. If you are over 25, you should start to consider how you can lower your weight.

If you are overweight, now is the time to act. Forget about appearances, and think about your heart. Some people enjoy success by simply changing their lifestyles, whereas some people may require more drastic treatment like liposuction. (Click here to find out more about this option.)

Whatever you decide, make sure you try to maintain a healthy weight because otherwise you could be putting your heart at risk.

Keep Your Heart Healthy

Work on keeping your heart healthy by eating a good diet full of fruit, vegetables, nuts, and fish, and drink plenty of water. You can also reduce your salt intake if you have high blood pressure. Prevention is always better than cure, and if you have a healthy diet and lifestyle, this will help to prevent heart problems.

If you are overweight, one of the best things you can do for your heart is to drop a few pounds. Remember, a little goes a long way, and losing just a few pounds can make a big difference for your heart. So watch your diet, keep active, and protect your heart by leading a healthier lifestyle.
