Jerome Laurent, 24, was found off Tioman island near where he had been snorkelling, said local police chief Johari Jahaya.
Declining to comment further, he said the man’s body had been sent to a hospital for an autopsy. The French embassy had informed them of the death and it was in touch with his family.
The Frenchman is just the latest tourist to lose his life on the island. Two other tourists were reported missing or killed in Tioman since 2011.
