A French national is missing after having gone snorkelling near Tioman Island yesterday, police said.
Rompin Police chief DSP Johari Jahaya said the tourist, Jerome Philippe Laurent, 24, had been snorkelling in front of the Berjaya Tioman Resort at about 3 pm.
A friend called the police after Laurent did not return to his chalet at 5.30pm, he said, adding that the police were informed at about 6.30pm.
Police launched a search but had to call it off due to adverse weather conditions and failing light, he said.
Johari said the search resumed at 8 am today, with 26 personnel from the police, marine police, fire and rescue service and Department of Civil Defence scouring the sea in three boats. – Bernama, September 3, 2014.
