Updated 2:17pm: A man who died in a hang gliding crash may have flown his glider without observing instructions to repair it.

47-year-old Mark Cairns died in February 2011 when hang gliding in Paekakariki.

Ross Gray sold the glider to Mr Cairns two months before the accident, and it passed an intensive Warrant of Fitness on the day.

Mr Gray says there were a couple of small areas that needed attention, but they weren’t enough to fail the test.

He says he suspects Mr Cairns didn’t get them seen to.

“I specifically told Mark in no uncertain terms that he wasn’t to fly the glider until the fly was replaced, and the glider was reinspected, and the glider was test flown by his instructor.”

Novice trying to impress advanced pilot?

An inquest has been told a novice hang glider who was mildly intoxicated was trying to impress an advanced pilot when he died attempting a dangerous landing.

David Dorne says he was flying with Mr Cairns on the day he died, and he instructed him to land on the Paekakariki beach.

Mr Dorne says he specifically warned Mr Cairns off trying to land back on the hill, because it was known to be dangerous.

“I believe that he was probably trying to impress me by top landing and turning up on the beach with his car because he was talking earlier about top landing.”
