Do you find it hard to get going in the morning? Is your energy flagging by 10am? Struggling to feel motivated at work? Well, what you eat (or don’t eat) for breakfast could make all the difference to how you perform at work.

For a long time, scientists and nutritionists have been telling us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and this is especially true if you have a busy day ahead of you. By eating the right things you can face the day feeling energised but choose the wrong things, or even worse, skip breakfast completely and you’ll risk feeling tired and grumpy all day.

So why is breakfast so important? Well, eating a healthy breakfast is known to stabilise blood sugar levels and this is essential for maintaining good energy levels. If you skip breakfast you’re more likely to reach for unhealthy snacks mid-morning which can send your blood sugar levels into chaos, leaving you feeling tired and craving even more sugary snacks.

The key to a balanced breakfast is to include a good mixture of carbohydrates, vitamins and protein – such as scrambled egg on toast, yogurt with fruit and granola, or a healthy cereal with milk. But perhaps you simply don’t feel like eating as soon as you wake up – if this is the case, try eating breakfast when you arrive at work instead, or try something light like a fruit and yogurt smoothie.
