When you work long hours it can be difficult to make time for regular exercise. But exercise is not only important for maintaining good physical health; it can also boost your energy levels and help you deal with workplace stress.

If you struggle to find the time for fitness classes or gym visits, try making small changes to your regular routine to include several short bursts of activity. Here are some suggestions:

  • Instead of eating at your desk or in the office canteen, take a walk at lunchtime. Don’t let bad weather be an excuse for staying inside; make sure you have an umbrella or waterproof to hand so that you can get out whatever the weather.

  • If you drive to work, park 10 minutes away from the office. This way you’ll easily fit 20 minutes extra exercise into your daily routine as you walk to and from work. If you get the bus, try getting off at an earlier stop.

  • When you’re at work, take regular breaks from your desk for a stretch and quick walk. Get up to talk to your colleagues instead of emailing them and take the stairs instead of using the lift.

  • Experts suggest that we should each walk at least 10,000 steps a day to maintain good fitness levels. Try wearing a pedometer at work to check that you are hitting this target.
