For many, enjoying a glass of chilled white wine, or a rich red is one of life’s little luxuries. But some environmentalists are advising that we need to think carefully about wine production methods and transportation processes before choosing which wines to buy.
Here are some of the factors to consider:
Choose Organic
Non-organic wines are often produced using a range of chemical fungicides and fertilisers, so choose organic wine wherever possible.
Check the Packaging
The transportation of glass wine bottles can result in high levels of carbon emissions. Some wine manufacturers now offer their wine in cardboard boxes or larger bottles for a more environmentally-friendly option.
The colour of the wine bottle is also important – it is easier for the recycling industry to process clear glass, so go for clear rather than green or brown glass bottles where possible.
Look for the Fairtrade® logo
Some wine manufacturers have come under fire for the way they treat their workers. Look for the Fairtrade® logo on bottles to find brands that are produced ethically.
Choose Local
If you live in California or the South of France, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to local wine. But if you live in cooler climates, your wine is probably imported from abroad. Always choose varieties that have travelled the least distance and avoid those that have been flown in from the other side of the world.
