Bringing detective Byomkesh Bakshy alive on celluloid was Dibakar Banerjee’s childhood dream but the director said that the project was scary and challenging to tackle.

A fan of Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s stories since the age of 13, Dibakar said he wanted Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! to be his first project but he is glad that he took over the movie only after gaining experience but it was bewildering all the same.

“This film was different from anything that has been done or anything that I have made. We spent sleepless nights agonising over it. It was scary and a different animal and we just wanted to tame it,” Dibakar told PTI. (Also Read: Here’s How You Can Get Byomkesh Bakshy! Look of 1940s Kolkata)

“There was never a time when I did not want to make it. I knew it will happen. When you make films, you start believing in destiny a bit because no matter how hard you push it will be made when it is destined to be,” he said. The director, known for his interesting take on contemporary issues in films like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and Shanghai, has set the film starring Sushant Singh Rajput, in the politically volatile era of 1940s Kolkata.

Dibakar said while there were seeds of the time and space in the author’s stories that start from the ’30s and go till ’60s, he picked up the ’40s because it was the most interesting one. (Also Read: Here’s How You Can Get Byomkesh Bakshy! Look of 1940s Kolkata)

“I like the vibe of Calcutta in the ’40s. It was the frontier post of the allied forces and Japan was trying to attack India through North-East to capture the port city. There was Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the Quit India movement. It was politically a very volatile period. Calcutta was under the shadow of war. It was a huge sea port for allied forces and like every war there was gangwar, drugs and weapons smuggling. Bengal famine actually happened because allied forces diverted foodgrains to Greece to feed the army. I wanted all of this for my backdrop,” the director said. When asked whether it was difficult to put so many things in the backdrop, the director said that it evolves gradually in the movie.

“It’s the skill of the writer and director to keep the background and foreground different but to keep the relation between the two. What happens in Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is that it starts as the backdrop and suddenly you realise that it was the foreground all along. Byomkesh did not know it, and when he realises it, he understands that this mystery is too big to handle for one man,” he added.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! also stars Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee in principal roles. The movie, produced by Dibakar Banerjee Productions and Yash Raj Films, is set to release on April 3.

Director Dibakar Banerjee and actor Sushant Singh Rajput on March 24 launched an apparel line titled ‘NOIR 43′, inspired by their forthcoming crime thriller film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!, at the Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW). Sushant also said he won’t mind creating his own fashion line someday.

While launching the collection at Amazon lounge at Pragati Maidan, when IANS asked him about the plans to take this association further and whether he would like to open his own fashion line in future, he said, “Till now I haven’t thought of it. But I would love to do that one day. Why not?”

And what about his personal style statement?

“I have a sense of fashion, but I don’t know what to do of it. I prefer wearing anything which I am comfortable in but it has to be comfortable and casual,” he told IANS as he gave a sneak peek into what’s in store in NOIR 43.

Since Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is set against the backdrop of Kolkata during World War II in 1943, various elements from the film have influenced the fashion line of contemporary clothing. The collection will be exclusively available on Amazon.in.

To highlight the collection, Dibakar has, for the first time in India, created a fashion film that was released at the Amazon.in Lounge.

The menswear line is inspired by military uniforms and the imagery of Kolkata in that period. The collection is dominated by blacks and dark earthy hues, giving a vintage “lived-in” look.

The collection gives the dhoti a new interpretation of slouchy draped knit-pants, while the digitally printed shirts and t-shirts reflect the mood portrayed in the film.

The womenswear line reflects the glamour of the 1940s and has a chic and sophisticated take on midi-length skirts, palazzos and Peter Pan-collared blouses.

The collection will soon be available at Amazon.in.

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who has shared a kissing scene with his co-star Swastika Mukherjee in his upcoming film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! , said that director Dibakar Banerjee played a “game” with him for the scene.

“Dibakar (Banerjee) played a good game with me which eventually turned bad for me. He instructed me about a scene and I got ready for it, but I didn’t know that Angoori Devi (the character) was going to kiss me in that scene,” said Sushant, who had earlier kissed actresses Parineeti Chopra and Vaani Kapoor on screen in Shuddh Desi Romance.

He said that usually he tells his girlfriend Ankita Lokhande about a film’s script “so that she is mentally prepared” for whatever he needs to do.

But in the case of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! , the director kept the kissing scene a secret.

“I was also not prepared for it. But the interesting thing is that even Byomkesh Bakshy (the character) in the film didn’t know about it. So, the first take happened and I reacted the way I was supposed to react as the character, and Dibakar got his take. He didn’t tell me and pretended as if he also didn’t know about it,” added the actor.

He even said that despite getting his perfect shot, Dibakar made him give six more takes.

“He asked for a few more takes. I did six more takes and then called Ankita to tell her that she does not need to worry as nothing of that sort has happened,” Sushant revealed at the second trailer launch of the film.

But it was upon seeing the film’s trailer that he “saw the kiss”.

“I looked at Dibakar and was like ‘What is this?’ So this is how he played such a game with me,” he added.

Based on Saradindu Bandyopadhyay’s well-known and successful fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshy, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! is a contemporary interpretation of Calcutta (now Kolkata) during the 1940s. It is an adventure thriller mired in deep political intrigue. It is slated to release April 3.
