While the jury is still out on whether or not you should take supplements for your general, overall wellbeing, a lot of people hail the benefits of taking such pills for fitness and athletic performance. Whether you take little gels with you on your long runs, or pump up with a protein shake after long strength-training workouts, fitness experts and enthusiasts believe in the wellness benefits of supplementation – which may make a new study quite a hard pill to swallow. Researchers in Norway have suggested that, if you are an endurance athlete, taking some types of vitamin supplement may make it harder to train for big events like marathons.


 


The findings of the study, which were published in The Journal of Physiology, led the researchers to conclude that you should use vitamins C and E with caution as they may “blunt” the way your muscles respond to exercise. That said, other leading experts have questioned the research, as the 11-week trial results revealed that actual athletic performance was not affected. The team of researchers at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo argued vitamin supplements were readily taken and available, but they did admit they were unsure if they affected athletic ability.


 


The trial went on for 11 weeks and, during this time, the 54 participants were given either 1,000mg of vitamin C plus 235mg vitamin E or a sugar pill and trained up to four times per week. The participants were given a beep test – in which you run faster and faster between two points 20m apart – but there was no difference in their performance during this test. The blood samples and tissue biopsies, on the other hand, suggested there were differences developing inside the muscle. Your muscle cells gain energy from lots of internal tiny mitochondria, and taking the supplements seemed to cause the participants to produce fewer extra mitochondria to cope with the increasing demands placed on the muscle.


 


Researcher Dr Goran Paulsen commented, ‘Our results show that vitamin C and E supplements blunted the endurance-training-induced increase of mitochondrial proteins, which are needed to improve muscular endurance. Our results indicate that high dosages of vitamin C and E, as commonly found in supplements, should be used with caution, especially if you are undertaking endurance training.’ However, Mike Gleeson, a professor of exercise biochemistry at Loughborough University, was less than convinced by the study results. According to Gleeson, the biggest factor in performance is actually how fast your heart and lungs can get oxygen to your muscles, not mitochondria. He added that the lack of a difference in athletic performance ‘makes it difficult to interpret,’ noting ‘The bottom line is studies show changes in the ability to adapt to exercise could be impaired by high-dose vitamins, but until there are studies showing them affecting athletic performance people shouldn’t be worried.’


 


Dr Emma Derbyshire, from the industry-backed Health Supplements Information Service, commented that some studies had shown a benefit. ‘In a four-week randomised controlled trial evaluating vitamin C and E supplementation among female athletes, supplementation reduced markers of oxidative stress compared with a placebo tablet and reduced muscle damage markers associated with aerobic exercise,’ she said. ‘This latest study is essentially preliminary and the research findings would need to be re-assessed in further work. Eating as healthy a diet as possible is very important for sports people and athletes. However, if they have a hectic training schedule, particularly for those doing endurance training who are not able to eat as well as they should, a multivitamin and mineral supplement provides a method of ensuring that the intakes of these essential nutrients, including vitamin C and E, follow recommended guidelines.’

While exercise is absolutely paramount to your wellness, if you don’t take the steps to prevent injury you could be putting your wellbeing at risk. This is especially important to you endurance event trainers out there, so we’ve outlined six ways to improve your endurance without doing yourself a mischief.


 


1. Give yourself time off: When you’re creating your fitness plan, make sure you include rest days in which you both physically and mentally take a break from training. Vic Brown, associate strength and conditioning coach at Boston University and assistant coach for Boston Performance Coaching, a triathlon and endurance athlete coaching service, says, ‘I recommend training no more than two weeks consecutively without resting. Novice and/or masters athletes may require “off” days more frequently.’ He adds that you should include recovery weeks – which typically include fewer hours spent exercising or less miles trained – every third to fifth week.


 


2. Employ recovery techniques: ‘There are a number of ways to incorporate recovery into your routine,’ Brown asserts. ‘Biofoam rollers and massage sticks help sore, achy or stiff muscles recover from exercise. Watching movies, spending time with family, reading, listening to music or socializing with friends can all be effective relaxation strategies that allow you to disassociate from physical exercise and reduce tension while developing positive mood states of happiness and calmness.’


 


3. Get enough sleep: Sleep is vital for your body to grow and repair, especially if you’re physically active on a routine basis. Without the recommended eight to nine and a half hours of sleep each night, you may compromise your cardiovascular performance by up to 20%, which has a further impact on your reaction time, ability to process information and emotional stability. Brown adds, ‘Naps are always icing on the cake.’


 


4. Fuel up after exercise: It’s important to restore your muscle and liver glycogen stores with good post-workout nutrition, as well as improving your hydration and repairing your muscle tissues. Brown advises, ‘You should eat 15 to 30 minutes after exercise, preferably as soon as possible, when the muscles are most receptive to fuel. Muscle replenishment and tissue repair can be accelerated if you combine carbohydrates and protein together in a ratio of 4 to 1.’ You can work out how much water you’ve lost if you weigh yourself before and after exhaustive exercise. Then, in order to stay hydrated, you need to consume at least 24 ounces per pound of body weight lost within six hours after exercise. If you’re engaging in activity for more than four hours, make sure you include electrolytes to eliminate your risk of hyponatremia.


 


5. Warm Up…: Brown notes, ‘A proper warm up is a key component to preparing the body for the demands of any training session or competition. Developing a pre-race warm up is unique to each individual. Performing a warm up will elevate heart rate and VO2, and increase blood flow to the connective tissue and local muscles to be trained. This in turn will raise muscle temperature and help decrease joint and muscle stiffness, therefore improving range of motion.’ It is recommended that you warm up for five to 15 minutes, and then re-warm up after 45 minutes of inactivity.


 


6…And cool down: On the other side of the coin, a proper cool down is the beginning of your recovery process and preparation for the next day’s training. To clear lactic acid and reduce the severity of your muscle soreness, try effective cool down activities such as low-intensity aerobic exercises. This includes aquatic-based training, light jogging or cycling.

You may like the idea of improving your well-being and exercising more, but the prospect of a three-mile run may have you thinking again. However, a recent fitness trend has emerged in which you undertake workouts for as little as four minutes at a time, but still get the same wellness benefits of endurance training. So what’s the deal with this ultra-efficient exercise?


 


When you undertake high-intensity interval training (HIIT), you alternate periods of high-intensity activity with periods of low-intensity activity in order to get fit fast. According to UK surveys, the number one reason why people say they don’t exercise enough is because they don’t have enough time. However, not only is this new training trend a godsend for people with busy schedules (who doesn’t have four minutes to spare?) but HIIT has the science to back it up. Surely, then, it’s a no-brainer; you get the exercise and the health benefits you need, without the kerfuffle of finding the time to do it. Still, could HIIT be promoting exercise simply as a means to an end?


 


There are many studies which have shown how HIIT and endurance training produce the same main effects; muscle adaptations, help with aortic stiffness and increased insulin sensitivity. This means that one is just as effective as the other for preventing heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. However, the proliferation of HIIT-style training regimes has seen a shift in the fitness industry, with the focus being less on making exercise enjoyable, and more on getting away with the bare minimum. Instead of just getting it over with, surely exercise should be celebrated as part of a health lifestyle. Sure, you can’t get a tennis match over with in four minutes, but isn’t it more fun?


 


When it comes to sticking with an exercise programme, enjoyability is a crucial factor. Fitness experts will stress that you need to find a routine that works for you, rather than what’s popular at this present moment in time. Only YOU have to like it, only YOU have to stick with it for the long haul, so that it can make you, and you alone, physically and mentally healthy. This might mean undertaking HIIT training – some people do genuinely like getting a sweat on for four minutes – but if your preference lies in running marathons or playing football with your friends, don’t let “time” shift your focus away from what you want.
