There are many things that age you, other than simply getting older. If you really want to find an anti-aging method that works, you would be well advised to focus on prevention, and on not doing the harmful little things that can degrade the wellness of your skin or the wellbeing of your eyes, and add years to your projected age.

One of the worst things you can do for your age is to squint. It is only natural that as you get older, your eyesight begins to go. Many people become nearsighted in middle age, and this is when other muscles around the eye come into play in an attempt to help you focus. As you use all these tiny muscles to squint and peer at things, you then make deep lines around the eyes which give your eyes a wrinkled and world-weary look. You can tackle these fine lines using Botox injections, but the best thing to do is to actually get your eyes checked. Sometimes a pair of glasses (or contacts) can allow the eye muscles to relax and you will then find that your skin is smoother and you look younger.

Having bad teeth is also terribly aging. Your teeth add structure and vertical height to your face. If you grind them, bite your nails, chew aggressively or if a diseased tooth has to be removed altogether, your facial skin becomes slacker than before. This, combined with the fact that your skin naturally loses its elasticity as you get older, can result in your skin sagging around your mouth, and the appearance of wrinkles. The best thing to do is to brush your teeth twice a day and go to have them professionally cleaned at least once a year. Remember to floss regularly too, and if you think you are grinding your teeth then a bite guard can also help.

Older people can still be sexual, and recent studies have shown that engaging in sexual activity can be the best way to boost their wellness and wellbeing. One study in particular has shown that older married couples who have sex on a regular basis are more likely to be happy (both with their lives and with each other) than those who have sex infrequently or not at all.

Carried out at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, the research has revealed the importance of sexuality for those aged 65 or older. Highlighting the importance of the link between happiness and sex will help wellness organisations to help the older generations enjoy and explore their sexuality.

This research is based on a large group study, carried out in the last couple of years. In the study, it was found that sexual activity was directly linked to marital happiness and general happiness. Only 40 percent of those who had not had sex in the past 12 months said that they were ‘very happy’ with life, whilst of those who had sex once or more per month, around 60 percent said that they were very happy.

Likewise, 59 percent of those who had had no sex in the year prior to the study said that they were happy in their marriage as opposed to around 80 percent of those who were having sex frequently. For the purposes of the study, sex referred to any kind of sexual contact such as oral, anal or vaginal, and the results were only looked at after making adjustments for other influencing ‘happiness factors such as gender, age, health and finances.

Of course, the study could be correlational, and it could mean that older couples who have more sex are happier, or happier older couples have more sex!

70s sexThe topic of sex amongst senior citizens is a bit of a taboo one. Many people of this age come from a generation where sex is not commonly discussed and is thought of as something that is private between a man and a woman. This attitude, however right-thinking, may be having an impact on sexual health however, as older people with an active sex life feel less able to ask for help with aspects of their sex life.

When it comes to physical wellness, senior citizens are adept at taking any medication, vitamins, minerals and supplements that they may need, and are more than happy to consult doctors and medical professionals for virtually any other area of the anatomy. When it comes to sex, however, it’s far more of a closed-door. This is leading to an increase in sexually transmitted infections in older people.

A culture that is not comfortable with senior sex also contributes to this, as people think of old people being sexual as ‘gross’, and this means that it is not something that is often talked about openly. Many professionals believe, however, that in order to safeguard the older generations from STIs and other problems, such as sexual assault, we must become more open to discussing sexual wellbeing with the grandparents of today.

According to statistics, STIs are growing in this age group, especially those such as Herpes and Syphilis. This is thought to be due, in part, to less condom use in the older generations. Women over the age of 40 may be far less likely to insist on the use of condoms, due to the fact that she is no longer able to get pregnant. Older men who suffer from erectile problems may also avoid condoms as they may fear that they are an added barrier to sexual fulfillment.
