Dr. James Jones presents the third in his enlightening talks concerning healthy living, with emphasis on maturity. It’s this Wednesday at noon in Walden Yacht Club. This one focuses on metabolism.

“Metabolism is a magical word,” Dr. Jones wrote in an e-mail. “It sums billions of constantly active biochemical reactions that keep the body alive. A hearty metabolism is a perquisite for a healthy body.”

His two previous discussions have dealt with medical care and what he terms as “the unappreciated wealth of health,” which he observes as mostly appreciated when impaired. Therefore, he urges preventative measures to insure continuous good well being.

Dr. Jones gives his information free of charge with the hopes of benefiting listeners, and that it will engender a ripple effect. A visiting Professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics at Baylor and other prestigious institutions, he has performed thousands of heart surgeries throughout the country. Additional degrees include Ph. D., MHS, and FACS. His presentations include humor and interesting power points; he sometimes dons a scrub suit.

“Forest fires, internal combustion engines, and human cellular generation all result from oxygenation,” he continued about Wednesday’s presentation. “When oxygen is burned with a combination of nutrients in the human body, free radicals occur that can be neutralized with healthy habits.”

In his third talk at Walden, Dr. Jones will discuss fundamentals of weight management through controlling energy metabolism, emphasizing that dietary indulgences come with a cost of weight gain, particularly in those growing older. About 60 percent of calories consumed are just to stay alive; the total decreases with age but does not have to do so, he noted.

The talk comes after lunch at noon, with reservations necessary to assure a place. Walden Yacht Club Master Chef Rick Adams prepares a plated luncheon menu that is flavorsome, yet health laden. Lunch costs $15 with reservations at Walden Yacht Club 936-582-4222. Dr. Jones, a resident of Del Lago with wife, Joan, speaks without charge.

The Walden Follies light up this weekend, opening tonight with a sold-out show.

If you neglected making reservations until it was too late, you’ll be pleased to know that you can enjoy some of the musical highlights on March 19 at 11:15 a.m. It’s part of the ongoing outreach in Walden Community Church’s XYZ series, with XYZ being “Extended Years of Zest,”

However, reservations must be made no later than March 17 by calling Walden Community Church at 936-582-6696, or Kym Harris at 936-223-2721. Lunch and the program cost only $6, and the public is welcome.

Kym booked Walden favorites Marna Leasure, John Tryon, Roxie Gernand, Jud Schleper, Judy Lord and more. Of course, no show is complete without a song or two from Kym, who possesses a marvelous voice and the stage presence to go with it.
