Three research grants recently have been awarded to the Andrews Research & Education Institute to help its physicians treat knee injuries.

Research studies are developed to address medical needs in the community and are conducted at Andrews with the goal of bettering patient outcomes and improving the quality of life for our community.

Below are the three research grants Andrews has received:

- A $46,000 grant has been awarded from Gensco Laboratories to collect data related to the use of a topical prescription gel following knee surgeries. The study will evaluate the product’s ability to reduce post-surgical pain and the amount of narcotics used for post-surgical pain management.

- A $40,000 grant from OrthoCor will be used to investigate pulsed electromagnetic field therapy for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The therapy has been used for bone growth stimulation and wound healing for some time, but the study will look at the device’s efficacy and ability to reduce pain for patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee.

- A $250,000 grant from EmCyte will be used to investigate the use of autologous products to treat symptomatic knee osteoarthritis in retired professional athletes. The study will compare bone marrow aspirate concentrate with platelet-rich plasma in treating symptomatic knee osteoarthritis to determine which treatment affords the better patient outcome.
