There are moments when the tonsils develop with spots on them. You will not be able to determine this if you are not really going to look into your tonsils. But you will also be able to determine that you are experiencing this because of the symptoms that come with it. Usually, these white spots are the reasons for the pain when you swallow and it can also come with fever. And most of all, there is a feeling of discomfort in the throat even when you are not really swallowing. When you feel these symptoms, it would be advisable for you to check your tonsils.

The white spots in your tonsils are not actually caused by a single condition. There are different things that may cause this. In order for you to learn more about this, here are the possible causes of the white spots in your tonsils:

  • Tonsillitis. This is the most common cause of pus or white spots in the tonsils. This is caused by a bacterial or a viral infection. When you are experiencing this condition, it will be accompanied by difficulty in swallowing. Aside from that, you will also be having fever. But the treatment that will be given to the patient who has tonsillitis depends on the cause of the problem. If the infection has been a result of bacteria, the doctor will be recommending antibiotics. For those who are experiencing this problem very often, a surgery called tonsillectomy is available.

  • Tonsil Stones. The other possible reason for the white spots in the tonsils is the condition when there are hardened particles that are deposited in the area. These particles may be dead cells, food or mucus that were formed and solidified in the area. You can figure out that you have this type of condition when you experience bad breath and you also have earaches. You can find solution on how get rid of Tonsil Stones by means of surgery. But this is only recommended if the condition is something that is already causing permanent discomfort.

  • Strep Throats. This is another condition that is caused by bacteria. But this time, the infection occurs on the throat. Few of the most common symptoms are intense pain whenever you are swallowing, the feeling of itch on the throat and a very high fever. When experiencing this condition, you have to go to the doctor right away in order for you to get the exact dosage of antibiotic that you need.

  • Mononucleosis. This is a condition that is usually experienced by adolescents. This is caused by virus that makes it possible for pus to be developed on the tonsils. There are different symptoms that make you know that you are experiencing this condition. You may feel tired and feverish. You can also have headaches that are accompanied by rashes all over the body. Consulting your doctor is the best way to get rid of this.

  • Viral Pharyngitis. This is the type of infection that is affecting your tonsils and your pharynx. And this is one of the main reasons why there are white spots that are developed in your tonsils. Virus or bacteria can either cause this and the doctor will be the perfect person to give you the treatment that you need.

Now that you already know the different causes of the infection that may result to the formation of pus or white spots on your tonsils, you should consider going to the doctor’s office whenever you experience it in order for you to get the best treatment.

Cleaning up your diet is monumentally beneficial for your wellbeing, but knowing where to start can be a daunting task. The key to a better, cleaner diet is to make small, sustainable changes to your lifestyle, and doing it one at a time so you don’t send your mental wellness in a tailspin in the process! With that in mind, we turned to Steven Macari, a certified holistic health practitioner specialising in nutrition, weight management, digestive health and stress management, for a list of fixes that you, with time, can implement in your diet.

1. Get rid of gluten: Reducing or eliminating gluten from your diet is no mean feat, which is why it’s important to get this one under your belt before you move on to make any other changes. Studies show that more than 60% of us are gluten-sensitive, and the percentage goes up – for some reason – if you have blue or green eyes. Macari recommends removing gluten from your diet for two weeks to see if you experience any improvements. If you do, you might want to get your doctor to confirm you are indeed sensitive to gluten.

2. Drink more water: As a human being, you’re 70% water, which shows just how intrinsic good old H20 is to your wellness. Most of us don’t drink enough water and, as a result, end up mistaking thirst or dehydration for hunger, and consequently overeating. In order to hydrate your body effectively, you need to drink half your weight in ounces per day (i.e. if you weigh 120 pounds, you should drink 60 ounces of water every day).

3. Watch out for the white stuff: There are four foods that are commonly referred to as the white devils: white sugar; pasteurised dairy; table salt and white flour. These foods are known as devils for a good reason; they have a direct, disastrous impact on your mind and body. In fact, the white devils have been linked to any number of health concerns, including a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, weight gain, blood sugar issues and digestive problems.

4. Say NO to GMO: Two of the biggest genetically modified (GMO) foods are soy and corn, but there are other offenders that you should also avoid. Papaya, squash and aubergines all fall into this category and studies have shown that these kinds of foods actually modify your cells. This can mean you fall prey to a whole host of health issues and even age prematurely, and no one wants that! Instead, you should choose organic produce wherever possible. Even if fruit and vegetables don’t fall into the GMO category, if they’re not organic this means they have been sprayed by toxic chemicals. Non-organic meat means that animals have likewise ingested these chemicals, and your body will store those toxins. Your body is unable to detoxify these substances in fat, meaning that you won’t be able to lose weight because the foods you’re eating are covered in toxic substances.

5. Make friends with fat: While bad fats can make you ill, as well as making you hold onto unwanted body fat, good fats are, as the name suggests, good for you. In fact, your body needs good fats for effective brain function, healthy skin, high energy levels and well-regulated hormones, so it’s important to get your fill of good fats. This means you need to avoid bad fats such as canola oil, palm oil, margarine, hydrogenated oils, vegetable oils and trans-fatty acids. Then, add in healthy fats like organic versions of olive oil, coconut oil, ghee, butter (from pasture-raised cows), grape seed oil, avocado oil and nut oils.

Housework is a bore at the best of times, but when it comes to cleaning the trickier areas of the home, it can be daunting too. If you’re looking for some inexpensive ways to clean those stubborn parts of the home, from the showerhead and beyond, here are some tricks you’ll be eternally thankful for.

1 – Washing your fruit and veggies can be tiresome, especially if you buy in bulk. Put them in a clean sink topped up with water and a dash of white wine vinegar and let them soak for a minute or two to kill off the bacteria and leave your produce ready to eat in no time.

2 – You can magically remove floor cuffs easily with the use of WD-40 – this unknown household trick could save you plenty of time scrubbing the floors to no avail. Simply spray a little on the mark and scrub with a dry brush for a few minutes to lift the stain.

3 – For a clean shower head that’s free of limescale, mix 1/3 cup baking soda with a cup of white wine vinegar and put in a plastic storage bag. Place the bag carefully over the head of the shower and tie to the shower pipe, leaving for a couple of hours to let the solution break down the build-up. Be careful when putting the solution in the bag, as it’s a chemical reaction. Once it’s had time to sit, remove the bag and rinse the solution off the shower head.

4 – Got a spare sock and some white wine vinegar? If you have blinds which gather dust and can be tricky to clean properly, simply add a splash of vinegar to an old sock and place over your hand – you can now grip the bars of the blind carefully and slide the sock over the plastic to remove the grime and dust easily and effectively.

5 – If you’ve lost an earring behind the sofa or kitchen cupboard, don’t consider it lost forever. Simply tie the foot of a pair of tights over the end of your vacuum tube and switch it on – you’ll be able to suction it back up without losing it in the vacuum.

Human papillomavirus is known to cause cervical cancer, but many people forget that it’s a sexually transmitted disease, and so can easily put your wellbeing at risk. According to a hospital release from Dr Katharine O. White, chief of general obstetrics and gynaecology at Baystate Medical Centre, ‘I can’t think of any better way to observe STD Awareness Month than for parents to consider getting their child the Gardasil vaccine to prevent them against the human papillomavirus.’

There is no treatment for human papillomavirus, which, as it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide, is a major wellness concern. More than half of sexually active men and women will become infected at some time in their lives, and White noted, ‘While the vaccine is recommended for both girls and boys ages 9 to 11, studies tell us that women up to age 26 will also benefit from being vaccinated, which is covered by insurance up to that age.’

In March, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new analysis of eight common STIs; chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B virus (HBV), herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis and trichomoniasis. The CDC report showed that up to half of all new infections each year affect the wellness of young people ages 15 to 24. White commented, ‘While this age group is the most vulnerable, anyone with a new partner or with multiple partners is also vulnerable.’

Dr. Patricia Bailey-Sarnelli, director of paediatric and adolescent gynaecologic services at Baystate, added that the need for prevention is greater than ever, but part of the problem has to do with normal adolescent psychological development. ‘Adolescents go through a phase of magical thinking where, basically, they have a sense of invulnerability, that nothing can hurt them,’ she explained. ‘For that reason, they tend to be less consistent about condom use, so that puts them at greater risk.’

Bailey-Sarnelli noted that ‘the girls I am seeing now are somewhat better informed and most talk about learning about sex in their health class at school.’ However, the CDC statistics show that more needs to be done for teen sexual health. ‘I always like to tell them that we are all sexual beings, and that the most important part of that is being a responsible sexual being – responsible to themselves, to their partners, their family, and community – and part of that includes using protection against sexually transmitted diseases.’

Should You Get Your Child a Human Papillomavirus Vaccine?

Puerto Rico is a U.S territory in the Caribbean, and children there are nearly 300 percent more likely to have the respiratory condition, asthma, than white non-Hispanic children in the continental United States. And shockingly still this year, Puerto Rico has seen a jump in asthma cases, which health officials believe could be linked to the heavy rains that have unleashed millions of spores.

The island, which has a population of 4 million, already has 2.5 times the death rate that stems from asthma as the mainland. Puerto Ricans living in the U.S. also have been hit hard by asthma, with an asthma attack rate 2.5 times higher than for white people in the same area.

Another issue that is adding to the problem is that Puerto Rican children do not seem to respond as well as those from other ethnic groups to the number one medication prescribed to asthmatics: Albuterol, which comes in an inhaler used to relieve sudden attacks. Due to this, several major pharmaceutical companies are trying to come up with an alternative medication, but they are still years away from doing so.

No-one really knows for certain why Puerto Ricans suffer so much more from asthma than other races and nationalities, despite decades of research. There are a number of theories including volcanic ash that drifts in from nearby Montserrat, clouds of Sahara dust covering the city in the summer and fungi that come with the tropical humidity. This was particularly bad this year, as it was the wettest on record. Some researchers suspect poverty and the fact that tens of thousands of people live in public housing projects with mice and cockroaches, known to be asthma triggers.

Wales to reduce infections and raise sexual health servicesThe use of the morning-after pill was first approved in the United States 15 years ago, and, according to a new study, it was a popular decision. The first government report to analyse how emergency contraception has affected sexual health has found that the use of the morning-after pill has notably increased in the United States, with roughly 1 in 9 younger women reporting that they have taken the pill after sex.

For the study, which was released by the CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) last month, a team from the National Centre for Health Statistics conducted a survey involving over 12,000 females aged between 15 and 44 years. The researchers, led by Kimberly Daniels, found that 11% of the subjects who’d had sex between 2006 and 2010 had used the morning-after pill. This is a huge leap from 2002 when, just a few years after adults were able to get emergency contraception on prescription, only 4% of people reported use.

In 2006, the FDA approved the sale of the morning-after contraceptive pill without a prescription for people over the age of 18. The scientists explained that this is why the number of people using it has increased, and it could also be due to the media coverage of experts trying to raise the age limit to buy it over-the-counter.

Of the participants who took the pill, 50% said it was because they’d had unprotected sex, and the majority of the rest reported it was due to a condom breaking or fears that their other birth control method might not work. Women in their 20s were more likely to take care of their sexual wellbeing in this way, as one in four had taken the morning-after pill. Roughly one in five females who never got married used the pill, compared one in 20 females who were married.

59% of the subjects who had taken the morning-after pill reported they had taken it only once, whilst 24% reported two times and 17% reported three or more times. White, educated women were the most likely to take the pill and, according to James Trussell, a researcher from Princeton University who has researched on the area, it’s not surprising. ‘I don’t think you can go to college in the United States and not know about emergency contraception,’ he said.
