It’s a common sexual health problem, but for men, growing breasts can have a hugely negative effect on their emotional wellness and wellbeing. Men develop breast-like protrusions for a number of reasons, including a simple case of storing excess fat in the chest area. Body fat can be stored underneath the wall of your chest, which pushes the pectoral area out the way.

Some medications, such as the treatment for cancer (chemotherapy), antidepressants, antibiotics and heart drugs can also make your breasts become larger. Using street drugs such as heroin, marijuana and steroids, plus alcohol, can also cause you to develop breasts.

There are ways that you can help to get rid of these so called ‘man boobs’, though, and keep them off for good. One of the best ways is to do exercise on a regular basis. If your man breasts are due to carrying excess weight, doing regular exercise will also help you to lower your body fat, which should help reduce the size of your chest. Healthy weight loss is around one or two pounds per week. Strength training on top of this can help to build up the muscles in your chest which can give your pectoral area a more firm and muscular look.

Alongside exercise, you should also aim to follow a low-calorie diet in order to lose weight. Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about your calorie intake. Your daily calorie limit depends on your current age and weight, so your doctor should be able to tell you roughly what you should be eating every day.

You should also ask your doctor to help you find out whether your medication could be causing the growth of breast. Your doctor (or a local pharmacist) will be able to tell you if growing breasts could be a symptom of any of the medications that you take on a regular basis.

If you are a man, your sexual health and wellbeing is likely tied up in how you perceive your performance in the bedroom to be. For a man to experience good sexual and emotional wellness, he has to feel that he is doing all the right things to keep his partner happy. There are plenty of male enhancement supplements and pills on the market, but there are actually some far easier ways to keep an erection for longer, without having to pay a visit to the pharmacy.

Did you know, for example, that heart health is linked to sexual performance? It stands to reason, of course, because your penis functions on blood pressure. When your brain sends the signal to your penis to get an erection, the blood vessels in the genitals become engorged and of course it is the heart that pumps that blood. When there is a problem with heart function or blood pressure, this blood is not pumped as strongly and the penis can go limp too far ahead of time. It could even mean that you struggle to get a proper erection.

One of the best ways to achieve this is to stay active, as cardiovascular exercise will keep your heart strong and healthy and this will keep the blood pumping and flowing to every area of the body. Exercise that increases your heart rate and keeps it up (so to speak!) for a period of time is the best kind, and experts advise that you take 30 minutes per day of an exercise that makes your break into a sweat.

There are also some foods that are reputed to help with your sexual performance, by keeping the blood flow healthy. They include bananas, chillies and peppers, onions and garlic. In addition to these, any food that has omega-3 fatty acid is great for your heart, along with vitamin B1.

So boys, do you think you’ve got game? Whether on the pitch, in the boardroom or in the bedroom, there are a few things you can do to boost your performance, as well as your wellness.

Firstly, look after your wellbeing as well as your weight control by maximising your muscles. Start lifting weights by investing in a set of dumbbells or a gym membership as strength training will be well worth the time and money.

Secondly, burn off the beer belly by joining a weight-loss programme and see how much more energy you have.

While we’re on diet, here’s tip three. Getting your 5-a-day is vital to getting the antioxidants you need to fight some diseases, and a third of your daily intake of food should be fruits and vegetables.

Fourthly, the easiest way to improve your physical performance is with enough fluids. If you want any chance of building up those muscles, they need fluid to work properly. You need at least 8 glasses of mostly water a day, and even more if it’s hot outside or your job is physical, as this makes it easier to become dehydrated and fatigued.

Tip five is beverages. Ditch the fizzy drinks. Sugar is addictive and all it does is add on the calories. Instead of indulging in fizzy drinks, mixed alcoholic drinks, cakes, biscuits and sweets, substitute a piece of fruit when you need to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Fuelling up on fibre is tip number six. You need the fibre, vitamins and minerals you get from wholegrains, oatmeal, brown rice and wholemeal bread. Fibre fuels your day as it fills you up so you eat less and certain fibres help reduce blood cholesterol levels. You don’t get the fibre you need from simple, refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, white pasta and white rice.

Seven is simple; watch those bulky portions because size does matter!

Research shows that men get less that half their calcium requirement from dairy foods, so tip number 8 is to get 3 servings of skimmed or low-fat dairy products a day. Without it, you’ll experience weak bones and weight gain.

Tip nine: Research shows that you gain a pound over the Christmas period, which is a pound you never lose so work on weight loss during the summer months to counteract that upcoming festive flab.

Finally, eat eggs regularly as they are a nutrition powerhouse, containing 13 essential vitamins and minerals and high biological protein. Even better, they’re cheap, adapt to any meal, and most men know how to cook eggs!
