Getting married means that you have a sex partner for life, but how do you stop things getting stale? We’ve got the hottest tips for married couples, so you can make sure you have a long and happy life of sexual health and wellbeing.

1. Make a “Yes/No/Maybe” List: Claire Cavanah, co-founder of Babeland, a national chain of women-owned sex shops, and co-author of Moregasm: Babeland’s Guide to Mind-Blowing Sex and Sex Toys 101, instructs, ‘Jot down a list that includes all different kinds of sexual acts — from being spanked to anal sex to doggy style — and make a copy for your partner. Afterwards, share your lists. It’s an un-intimidating way to open up the conversation about new things you’d like to try, and to learn what your partner might be open to doing.’

2. Have a Play Date in Bed: ‘Everybody knows that they should have a date night, and make time for that romantic dinner with candlelight,’ asserts Cheryl Sloane, co-owner of the Chicago-based sex shop G Boutique. ‘But you’re tired at the end of the day. And who is paying the babysitter?’ To battle bedtime boredom, Sloane recommends getting a new toy to play with and lock the bedroom door once the kids are asleep. ‘The worst that can happen with a new toy is that you’ll spend some time giggling in bed,’ she says. ‘And laughing together can only help your sex life.’

3. Lube Up: Sloane points out, ‘There’s nothing sexy about spit, and the right lubricant can make good sex great. My number one tip for all couples is to have a high-quality lubricant made of silicone because it lasts longer than water-based formulas and is usually glycerin-free.’ Wellness writer Holly Corbett recommends, ‘Try Pink ($26) or Uberlube  ($28) — both come in pretty, discreet glass bottles.’

4. Go Toy Shopping Together: ‘The phenomenon of 50 Shades of Grey has inspired so many women to open up and talk to their partners more about sex,’ Cavanah notes, but why not take it one step further. Shopping for sex toys – whether in an actual shop or online – can be a fun activity to do together. Corbett advises, ‘Suggest that you each of you picks out a new toy, and that you have to use it at home tonight.’ Cavanah explains, ‘It can feel both empowering and kind of silly, but you’re going together so it also feels like an adventure.’

5. Take Turns Being Selfish: Corbett suggests, ‘Take turns pleasuring each other by picking a night where you get all of the attention in the bedroom (or in the shower, or on the kitchen table…). The next night, put the focus solely on him.’ It may sound limiting, but focusing on one person can actually be very freeing. Cavanah details, ‘It takes the pressure off trying to be mutually engaging and distracted by stimulating each other so you can just relax and better enjoy the sensations. Every couple should do that at least once in their life.’

6. Try Tantra: ‘Tantra is actually all about how two people can get closer as a couple,’ says Sloane. ‘The number one tantric position is sitting facing each other with your hands on each other’s heart while trying to synchronise your breath so you feel more connected.’ If you want to heat things up with your husband, Sloane recommends searching online for a Tantra class near you. However, for an easy at-home Tantric exercise, all you need to do is spoon each other and try synchronising your breathing. This will help you to feel closer instantly.

While it may sound a little “out-there”, yoga fans swear that tantra yoga can improve your sexual health and relationship wellness. The ancient practise of tantra yoga uses sexual energy to help you reach a higher state of consciousness, leading to hotter sex and a deeper connection to your partner. This sort of practise has worked wonders for actress Diane Keaton’s wellbeing, as the Annie Hall star asserts that tantra yoga has helped her achieve nine-hour orgasms! Therefore, we’ve turned to Charles Muir, director of the Source School of Tantra, founder of sourcetantra.com, and co-author of The Art of Conscious Loving, to find out how you can achieve that oh-oh-ohmmmm feeling.

1. Touch Each Other’s Seven Erogenous Zones: Muir directs, ‘To open you up for a more intimate connection, spend five minutes a day caressing each other’s chakras—powerful energy centres located at the crown of your head, third eye (between your eyebrows), throat, middle of your chest, abdomen, perineum, and base of your spine. Vary between stroking, scratching, squeezing, tapping, and placing a still hand on these areas.’

2. Crack Out the Spoons: ‘According to tantric tradition, spooning helps you and your man feel incredibly in-tune because your chakras are aligned, allowing energy to flow between you,’ Muir explains. ‘Lie quietly in this position for a few minutes before and after sex, and concentrate on synchronizing your breathing.’

3. Hit the Spot: Muir points out, ‘Tantric yogis believe G-spot stimulation activates new neural pathways between your body and brain, making both you and your guy capable of more intense pleasure and almost limitless orgasms. Have your man stroke you there as a regular part of foreplay, first gently playing with your clitoris and vaginal opening, then working his way to your G: a small lump located a couple of inches up on the front wall of your vagina.’

4. Breast is Best: ‘Breast play is integral to tantric yoga because the twins connect to your heart chakra, which opens you up to greater love and pleasure,’ Muir asserts. ‘Heat lotion in the microwave or ask your guy to rub it between his palms until warm. Using a gentle circular motion, have him massage it into the centre of your chest, extending out to your boobs. Then touch your own breasts and have him place his hands over yours so you can show him the strokes you like. Next, switch and do the same thing to his chest and pecs.’

5. Try the Yab-Yum Position: Muir instructs, ‘Have your guy sit cross-legged or with his legs in a diamond shape. Sit on his lap, facing him, wrap your legs around his waist, and touch the soles of your feet together (this keeps energy cycling throughout your body). Put your arms around each other and begin to rock your bodies. He can also lift his thighs to raise your body up and down along his penis.’

6. Get Into the Swing of Things: ‘Now each lean back and place your hands flat on the floor a foot behind you,’ Muir continues. ‘Using your arms for leverage, swing your bodies back and forth. If you’re on the bed, he can even bounce up and down on the mattress—it’ll feel kind of like you’re flying.’

7. Work the Cobra: Muir suggests, ‘In the tantric version of missionary, have him prop himself up on his elbows, like cobra pose in yoga. Instead of thrusting in and out, he should rock his body back and forth or circle his hips around, delivering more pleasure to your g-spot and clitoris.’

Tantric sex is often associated with images of grand, eight-hour sex sessions spring to mind, or some erotic perversion of sex parties, but that isn’t actually the whole story. In our culture, tantric sex is shrouded in mystery, but what does it all mean and what can it do for you? The associations between sex and Tantra is actually a misinterpretation, one that reveals our preoccupation with sex in our culture. Tantra is actually an ancient practice which dates back to the 5th century in India and has been described as a celebration of existence in the universe – a way to improve not only yourself but also the world. Tantra is broadly defined as a spiritual method which focuses on heightening your experience of pleasure in the world, then sharing it with those around you. Historically, it’s been practiced via yoga, where mantras and movements are performed through rituals. Sexual rituals were only really performed by a minority of practitioners, even though that’s what has become linked to the method. Tantric sex, also known as NeoTantra, emerged as a rebellion against the organised religions, where sex was discouraged when seeking enlightenment.

However, Tantric sex teachers believe sex to be a sacred act where you have the opportunity to reach a higher spiritual state of being. It’s a way of opening your heart, making peace with your emotional self and embracing the power of your sexuality. Sexual energy is one of the most powerful energies for boosting your health, and using it consciously means you can tap into a source of youth and vitality. Those who practice tantric sex view the act as a way of truly connecting with their partner, rather than a means of self-gratification. There is no goal associated with tantric sex – the whole point is that you don’t achieve an orgasm. Rather, the goal is to focus on your feelings and the sensations you’re feeling during sex, making you really present in the moment, much as though you are meditating. Furthermore, Tantric sex is not always about intercourse. There can be other sensual experiences such as massage, prolonged eye contact, dancing and breathing exercises – anything which helps you be present with your partner and enables you to fully connect. Your sexual movements and breathing pace will be deliberately slow, and your orgasm is delayed – perhaps not even achieved.

Many people who practice tantric sex claim that both men and women are able to achieve multiple orgasms through practicing lingering and mindful sex. If your mind wanders, you need to bring your attention back to your breathing and the physical sensations of the moment, in order to be fully present. There are various positions and muscle contractions are advised to prolong your experience. And taking small ‘time outs’ to regain your composure when the arousal is becoming too much will help you control the time together and sustain the pleasure. Tantric sex teachers believe that Western society has an unhealthy relationship with sex and an unnatural attitude towards the act. In practicing sacred sexuality, people and the world as a whole can be transformed for the better. The aim of Tantric sex is the art of learning rather than succumbing to lust, and this helps you to achieve a sense of mindfulness and clarity, in addition to building a stronger relationship with your partner. Removing the pressure of ego and lust can help us reach this state a lot quicker, and that is what Tantra teaches us.
