Of the many challenges awaiting us in old age, Alzheimer’s disease may be the most dreaded. The disease expresses itself firstly through symptoms of dementia, and can later deteriorate into secondary infections, making it the sixth leading cause of death in the US. It is without doubt the biggest mental health problem we will ever face and has an enormous impact on the sufferer’s wellbeing as well as that of their family.

It’s important to watch the behaviour of elderly relatives and those over 65 in order to catch the disease early. Symptoms of dementia have a wider range of treatment options available if caught early enough. The main sign of early Alzheimer’s disease is memory loss. This can express itself in a number of ways including repetition of questions or stories, loss of short-term memory, confliction of the past with the present and linguistic confusion. The habit of forgetfulness does worsen quite naturally with age, but you should sit up and take note when this actually produces a communication breakdown. Memory loss leads to more general confusion and ends in the loss of the ability to perform even basic tasks. At this point, the individual will require full-time care to maintain basic physical wellness. The disease is irreversible and ultimately ends in death. It is a painful experience for the sufferer, and especially so for their loved ones, who have to go through the pain of watching them lose their rationality.

Research into supports and cures for Alzheimer’s are constantly underway. Of the complementary cures thought to have a helpful effect, coconut oil may prove to be a helpful supplement. Dr. Mary Newport provides anecdotal evidence to this effect, in her book about the helpful effect played by coconut oil in treating her husband. Dr. Newport considers that Alzeimer’s is a kind of diabetes of the brain, where the brain is unable to metabolise enough sugar to survive. As this goes on, brain cells start to whither and die, producing the symptoms of dementia. Ketones are an alternative form of ‘brain energy’ that can stimulate the growth of new brain cells.

Good quality organic coconut oil contains sixty three per cent medium chain fatty acids, which are converted into ketones in the body. It is therefore an abundant source of energy for the brain. In her book, Dr. Newport describes how the coconut oil supplement caused her husband to gain increased readings on cognition tests and strongly suggests that the use of the supplement for this purpose should be encouraged. It’s important to bear in mind that her research is mostly anecdotal, and relates to the case of one medical subject only – her husband. This being the case, the numerous instances of improved wellness leading from this treatment make it well worth a try.
