It’s a general fact that exercise is essential to your lifestyle, whether you are the daily jogger, the gym-buff or the weekend warrior. With healthy, grinning faces boasting an amount of weekly calories burned away and muscles that could dent a car, there hardly seems to be a downside to it.

Naturally, sex and fertility hardly ever seem to play a part in exercise – but too much of a good thing can be a very terrible extreme.

Ladies want the sexy curves to go with that impossibly daring outfit, but it never hurts to look after yourself in the meantime!

For women of average weight, there is the issue of Amenorrhea: a delay in the menstrual cycle that lasts for more than three months. Long-term, excess exercise combined with not enough food is sometimes the cause of this, which can then affect your fertility in the long run. To avoid it, consider a greater intake of calories if you do not wish to lessen the amount of training that you do.

In other cases, it should be noted that obesity can affect your fertility when your body becomes overheated – on the other side of the scale, exercising for a long duration can also affect the oestrogen levels.

Men are not entirely out of the picture though. Some may love a grubby man who can flex, lift and sort out their carburettor, but long-term, exhaustive exercises can lessen the sperm count, as well as your likelihood to conceive. Arguably, heavy-resistance training can increase testosterone, which can then have a chain-effect on other hormones – fertility included.

Does this mean chucking out the running shoes altogether?

Far from it!

Instead, like your diet, work out in moderation and don’t be too vigorous – any exercise still maintains your muscles – as long as you keep note of what you’re doing and how much you’re doing; there will be a chance to have a healthy family, as well as a happy body without pushing yourself too far.

Bad habits are things that people form to make their lives a little bit easier or to deter them from actually getting things done. They’re easy to form over time, but they’re also difficult to break. These are just some of the worst bad habits you can form and why it’s imperative that you try to break them.

1. Stop Multi-Tasking

It would seem multi-tasking would help you get things done in a more timely fashion, but in actuality, multi-tasking merely helps you start several tasks simultaneously making it nearly impossible to finish them from being so busy. At times, multi-tasking can lead to a person feeling overwhelmed and stressed. In order to avoid these feelings and to become more productive, try getting in the habit of completing one full task at a time.

2. Stop biting your Nails

Biting your nails can lead to a variety of health problems. Think about it – do you wash your hands before and after biting your nails? Probably not. Biting your nails can lead to you getting sick from germs or can lead to you getting other people sick. Nail biting can also lead to problems with your teeth. You could chip your teeth or cause damage to your gums. In addition to potential health risks, nail-biting leads to nubby, ragged nails. When you stop biting your nails, you will reduce the risk of sickness and will help improve your hands’ overall appearance.

3. Stop Eating Quick, Unhealthy Lunches

Whenever it’s time to take your break for lunch, it can seem effortless to swing through a fast food drive through, say a number for a combo meal, and have it handed to you within minutes. However, doing this over time is very harsh on your body, and you will reap the effects sooner or later. Instead, prepare your lunches at home with fresh greens and whole grains. Most likely, you will feel more healthy. You will also notice a difference in your bank account. Eating out daily gets expensive incredibly fast. Think of it this way: If you go the inexpensive route, lunch will cost you $5 per day. That’s $25 a week and $100 each month.

4. Don’t Answer Your Phone’s Every Call

Do you find yourself grabbing at your phone every time you hear it ring or feel it vibrate? Responding to your phone’s every alert can dramatically cut down on productivity. Not only are you taking the time to look at the phone to possibly answer the phone, but taking your concentration from your work to your phone also takes time. You will need to refocus on the task at home. In addition, chances are high that the notification can wait. The other problem with answering your phone all the time is it can come across as slightly rude, like you don’t care about the people you are with.

5. Stop Grinding Your Teeth

Grinding your teeth is an extremely bad habit you will want to break as soon as possible. Grinding your teeth can destroy your teeth and gums over time, and it can also entail expensive dental care. It can be difficult to stop this bad habit by yourself. If you suspect you might grind your teeth, check with your dentist, who should be able to see signs of teeth grinding if you do have this bad habit. You may want to find teeth grinding treatment in San Francisco or buy a mouth guard from the store to help break your teeth grinding habit.

6. Don’t Skip Out on Exercise

Lastly, don’t skip out on exercise. It might be easy to make the excuse that you don’t have time for exercise during your typical day, but you can probably find an extra 20-30 minutes to get a brisk walk or run in. Exercise is sure to help you feel better about your appearance. In addition, exercise is good for your heart and muscles. You can walk, swim, go for a bike ride, or find any other activity you enjoy. Exercise over time can help you build muscle, decrease fat and lose weight. Those who exercise every day are found overall to have healthier bodies than those who choose not to exercise.

For some people, height is linked to self-esteem and the way you feel people view you. Not being as tall as you wish can sometimes have a big impact on self-confidence and foster a sense of inadequacy. However, is it actually possible to grow in statue once your natural growing- cycle is complete and you make the transition from late-adolescence to early adult-hood?

If you want to be taller there are several options you can pursue: Firstly you can wear shoes and dress in a manner that extenuates and exaggerates your height – allowing you to make the most of what you already have. This can be achieved by wearing foot-wear with larger insoles or heels. Also dark colours such as grey, black and brown can help create a more imposing presence and generally make you look, “bigger”.

Another successful means to achieving greater self-esteem is to exercise regularly, and make life-style and diet changes. This allows you to feel more “comfortable in your own skin” and in certain instances, regular exercise in late-adolescence when combined with a well-balanced diet and getting a good night’s sleep whenever possible, has led to an increased height. Even if your height doesn’t change, regular exercise can also produce a larger body-shape which will also make you appear, “bigger”.

So whilst increasing your height can’t be achieved overnight with a form of, “miracle treatment”, you can increase your body-size if you follow some of the simple steps described. Hormone tablets also exist which have the potential to increase height, but you should exercise caution before taking this approach. As in many other cases, using natural resources are much better for you.

Doing exercise on a regular basis can do wonders for your wellness, but did you know it can also help improve your sexual wellbeing?

For many years, doctors and scientists have been very vocal about the health benefits of exercise. It can help you to lose weight, or just help you to maintain a healthy weight range. It can help to fight against serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, and it can also reduce your risk of developing other serious health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. If you exercise regularly, you will also benefit from improved energy and are likely to get a better night’s sleep. On top of all this, exercise is great for your mental health; it can help to increase your self-esteem, improve your mood and can help you to fight against depression.

If none of those are good enough reasons to motivate you to move off the couch then think about this: taking regular exercise can help to boost things in the bedroom. Of course, being fitter and healthier overall will go a long way to improving things in the bedroom, but certain types of exercise can also be great to help improve your flexibility, strength and stamina in bed. So, if you want to impress your partner next time you hit the sack, why not try some sex-specific exercises?

One such sex-specific exercise is the kegel exercise. You’ve probably already heard of these, but it’s important to bear in mind that they are not just for women. They are designed to improve the strength of the pubococcygeus muscle, which works as a sort of hammock to support the organs in the pelvis, including the bladder, rectum and reproductive organs.

Losing weight is an often overwhelming task—especially with how many workout programs we have at our fingertips today. However, taking advantage of technology to help you in your weight loss journey can keep you motivated and help truly get results. If you are trying to lose weight, here are five weight loss technologies that can help you along the way:

Fitbit

One of the most common fitness technology pieces to buy is a fitness band, such as a Fitbit. These fitness bands come in a variety of prices, sizes, and capabilities. Some have displays on them, some don’t. These fitness bands can do things such as track your steps, track how many calories you are burning, as well as track your sleep. They connect to your phone and computer wirelessly, and you can use tools within the app to keep track of your exercise and eating habits. Wearable fitness technology provides a reminder right on your hand—so you won’t be able to forget about working out or eating healthy.

Endomondo

If you’re not ready to dive right into purchasing a fitness band or they don’t work with your budget, the next option is to download a fitness app such as Endomondo. Endomondo uses GPS technology to track your exercise routine whether it be running, walking, biking, or climbing. It can then report back information such as a map of your route and how many calories you burned. You can also connect it to a fitness band for even more useful data. You can look at your history and get information such as lap time, mile time, and more.

Xmovo

They say that it is easier to stick to your fitness goals when you have a workout buddy. Xmovo provides you with a community-centered workout experience, using social TV that gives you access to workouts, and lets you track your progress. You can share your accomplishments with the Xmovo community, and even join different challenges depending on your workout preferences and goals. Best of all, Xmovo provides personally designed weekly workouts, so you can tailor your exercise routine to the types of fitness goals you are trying to achieve.

Fitbit Aria

Made by the same company that created the leading fitness band, Fitbit has created what they like to call the smart scale. The Aria is a scale that can show your weight just like any other scale. What makes it smart is it can track your BMI, lean mass, and body fat percentage as well. It connects to Wi-Fi so you can see your stats on your smartphone or computer and is compatible with your Fitbit tracker. You can also have multiple users.

Daily Burn

If you’re looking to try different workout ideas or routines, the Daily Burn app gives you daily video workouts to try so you don’t get tired of working out. There are 14 different workout programs to give you a wide range of options to choose from. This is a great option for those with a busy schedule who don’t always have time to make it to the gym.

Technology is everywhere around us, and using it in your weight loss journey can help you achieve your goals easier, and keep you motivated along the way.

It is always a good thing to go to the gym for regular exercise, but it is even better to maximize the time that you spend there. Just like a diet plan, exercise routines should be tailored to the person that is performing them in order for the body to receive the most benefit.

In order to know what is best for you in the gym, you must undertake a bit of trial and error. However, there are also some shortcuts that will allow you to speed up the process between hitting the gym as the naïve rookie and finding your optimal workout.

Gather Information

First of all, you should get the opinion of a trusted and reputable doctor. Your medical professional will be able to identify certain trends within your body and tell you what will be most effective in your workout. You should also take the advice of a doctor before starting any workout regimen because of the potential for danger that is involved.

Choose Supplements

Choose the right supplementation to help your workouts become more effective. While you are looking over your personal health with your doctor, you can also have him or her recommend to you supplementation that will help you to more effectively create your ideal body. Combining the right supplements with a good diet in order to shore up some of the weaknesses in your natural biology will only help you to more effectively build yourself in the gym.

Set a Schedule and Stick to It

Third, pick the time of day that is best suited to your natural body clock. Everyone has a natural body clock that sways in a certain rhythm. Most people have had to homogenize themselves because of their professional schedule; however, you should look to the time of day in which you have the most energy to go to the gym. There are plenty of 24-hour gyms that will accommodate you at any time so that you can get the absolute best workout out of your body.

Find a Fit Professional

Enlist the services of a professional gym trainer that can give you an outside perspective on your workout routine. Even if you do not necessarily have problems coming up with a workout routine, a gym specialists will be able to see changes in your body before you are able to see them. This person will be able to point out the exercises that cause positive change and help you avoid any dumb workouts. A good pro will be able to give you tips on how to make the most out of your workouts like playing tunes with your Jaybird headphones to keep you going. The motivation and support a trainer can provide is invaluable as they will be able to push you to the next level when you feel tired.

Getting the best workout means investing in yourself. Utilize the resources that you have as well as the expertise of those around you in order to understand what is best for you in the gym.

Are you one of the millions of people out there who dreads working out? It’s normal to feel that way at first. When you get used to it, you will start to enjoy your pursuit of fitness, but it is convincing yourself to start that is the hard part. There are plenty of ways to talk yourself into liking something. After all, fake it until you make it, right? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Start Small

You don’t have to hit the gym for an hour your first time out. Studies show that even fifteen minutes of low intensity exercise – like walking – per day can boost your mood, stabilize weight, and give you more energy. You can do anything for fifteen minutes!

Do Something You Enjoy

Exercise does not have to be torture. It doesn’t mean you have to head to the gym and use exercise machines or exhaust yourself following the latest insane exercise video. You can meet a friend at the park for a jog or just take your dog for a walk. If you love dancing, take your partner out to the club for the evening. In the summer months, hitting the pool is a great idea. You can work out while working on your tan.

Reward Yourself

When you pair something you don’t love with something you do, it can make you associate feelings of pleasure with what you don’t like. After a workout, give yourself a treat like taking in a favorite movie or reading a good book. Just don’t reward yourself with a hot fudge sundae or anything else that can sabotage your fitness plan.

Make Your Time

Your workout should make your feel happier and less stressed out. This is something you are doing for yourself and not anyone else. Listen to your favorite music or an audiobook on sweat-proof headphones like BlueBuds X from Jaybird, which are designed to withstand any workout routine. If you are attending a gym, you can even watch a favorite TV show while working out. Figure out a way to make your workout time all about you.

Exercise does not have to be the daunting enterprise we make it out to be in our heads. Exercise should fill you with joy, not dread. Therefore, approach it from that perspective. If you are pressed for time – or dying after just a few minutes – then keep it short and sweet. Do something fun rather than boring, so you will really look forward to exercising. Reward yourself for finishing the workout. It doesn’t matter how long it was, what it was, or even if you lost any weight. What matters is that you did it. Finally, remember that your workout is for you and you alone. Pamper yourself with an experience that is all about you.

When you’re sick of working out, you can end up drawn to those “miracle products” that promise to buzz, massage or trim away your flab without you doing any of the work yourself. However, this phenomenon doesn’t only apply to your physical fitness, but your beauty regime also. Instead of doing face-tightening exercises, the Japan Trend Shop offers the Hourei Lift Bra to do the work for you. And, yes, that’s a bra that you wear on your face.

Anti-ageing wellness expert Kriti Saraswat explains, ‘This “face bra” comes with a band which is mounted at the back of your head and the silicon rubber wire sits on your nose covering your cheeks. According to the inventors, the slight pressure it puts on your face results in diminishing those laugh lines which get prominent as you age. Take a virtual tour of their website and you will find many such age-defying items on the menu including vibrating eye pads to reduce lines and puffiness around the eyes, a face exercise stretch mask to reduce wrinkles and other such devices for the rest of your face – nose, lips, forehead, etc.’ But can products like the face bra really work?

Face Yoga Expert Danielle Collins notes, ‘The trend of using gadgets and equipments to reduce lines and wrinkles and slow down the ageing process is one prevalent mostly in Japan. According to me, the positive aspect of this is that it shows more and more people are now interested in exercising the face and understand that by strengthening the face muscles, you can slow down the ageing process. It is important to exercise, massage and relax the face, just like we do with the body. Gadgets such as the “face bra” are better than not exercising the face at all but such products are just an addition to face exercises, not a necessity. You actually don’t need any equipment to exercise the face – your fingers are enough to provide the required pressure.’

According to Collins, ‘It is much like exercise for the body – you can exercise without any equipment but there are options available should you want one. The only thing with the face is the muscles are so small that there is little need for gadgets and equipment. The “face bra” would benefit the mouth area but doesn’t work the rest of the face muscles, while Face Yoga works all 57 muscles in the face. It also works on holistic wellbeing with techniques such as deep breathing which benefit the mind, body and face meaning you feel good on the inside which radiates on the outside.’ The face bra, then, pales in comparison to face yoga – so which Face Yoga exercises have a similar effect as the face bra?

‘I would recommend the Smile Smoother exercise for toning the area around the mouth,’ says Collins. She instructs, ‘Hide your teeth with your lips and then make a small “O” shape with your mouth. Keeping your lips as tense as possible, smile as wide as you can. Keep hiding your teeth. Then go back to the “O” shape. Keep this going by repeating this changing of shape of the mouth. Next, hold the smile shape and place your index finger on your chin. Start to move your jaw up and down as if you are scooping something up with it. As you do this, start to tilt your head back slowly. Relax and repeat twice. This exercise works mainly the masseter muscle and many of the lower face muscles. It helps reduce fine lines around the mouth, the lines between the nose, and lifts and firms the cheek area.’

Weighing yourself often might not work wonders for your emotional wellness, but for Sally Edwards it made all the difference to a major health concern. ‘My doctor had retired and I changed to a new surgery where they had an asthma clinic,’ says the hairdresser from Aldington in Kent. ‘They saw on my notes that I suffered from asthma, but this was the first time anyone in the medical profession had weighed me. She took a sharp breath and made a face, so I knew it wasn’t good news.’ The 5ft 2in 45-year-old was appalled to discover her weight had shot up to more than 11st, and was now officially obese.

According to Sally, ‘The problem was that I didn’t feel fat because the weight had crept on so gradually during and after my pregnancies. Then when the children left things on their plates, I’d pick at the leftovers…I knew that I had to do something about it or my asthma would just get worse because I would become more immobile and reluctant to exercise.’ There is a clear link between obesity and asthma attacks, says Deborah Waddell, clinical lead nurse at the charity Asthma UK. She notes, ‘Obese people find their asthma much harder to control.’ In fact, researchers from RoyalBromptonHospital in London found that having a BMI of more than 30 makes you more likely to need the steroid prednisolone – used to reduce inflammation in the airways – and to resort to your inhalers more often.

Dr Andrew  Menzies-Gow, a consultant in respiratory medicine at Royal Brompton, comments, ‘Unfortunately, one of the side-effects of prednisolone is increased appetite and weight gain, so patients are more inclined to find activity difficult. It’s a vicious circle, but if  an asthma sufferer can break that cycle and lose weight, the benefits will be obvious.’ Sally definitely saw the need to lose weight and improve her fitness. ‘Getting up the stairs was very scary because the wheezing was so loud,’ she recalls. ‘And it stayed at the same level in my 30s and into my 40s. I couldn’t run after the children at the park.’

In order to lose weight, Sally stepped up her exercise regime, taking up jogging after looking on the Asthma UK website. Now, she runs four miles three times a week, attends a weekly spinning class, and cycles short distances instead of using the car soon. ‘I lost a stone-and-a-half in eight months and it made a huge difference,’ enthuses Sally. ‘It really brought the asthma under control and made the attacks less frequent and less severe – I have just one a month instead of three a week. When I was 11st, my body was struggling to cope with the weight, especially climbing stairs, but the fitter you are, the stronger your lungs become.’

Waddell explains, ‘If you can exercise, this will expand the airways, and improve your lung function. Following a low-fat, low-sugar diet and getting rid of weight, especially around the middle, will make a big difference. It’s all about changing your behaviour and lifestyle.’ Dr Menzies-Gow adds ‘Weight loss and exercise are not a magic bullet for asthma, but they can help enormously.’ He recommends that you take a close look at your entire lifestyle, stop smoking and avoid pets which aggravate the condition. As for Sally, the weighing scales were a wake-up call, but they’re still not her best friend: ‘I still don’t weigh myself very often, but now I have a pair of size 12 jeans and I try them on once a week,’ she admits. ‘I know that if they don’t fit then I have to try just that bit harder to keep the weight off.’

Losing weight is certainly almost always a case of eating right and improving your fitness, but not all exercises were created equal. Whilst all exercises will improve your wellness and wellbeing in some way, you need to do certain types of exercises to ensure that you create a lean body.

You don’t have to go to the gym to create a blitzed body, however. There are plenty of fat-burning moves that you can do at home. You really can get your perfect body without ever even having to leave the house. It uses very little kit and very little time, because the high-powered moves (also known as plyometrics) are one of the best ways to burn calories. This is because they raise your heart rate and tone your muscles at the same time, which helps you to get fit while burning fat and getting rid of any trouble spots.

To stop yourself from getting any injuries, make sure that you warm up before doing any form of exercise, by doing a bit of jogging on the spot and doing some functional movements such as hip circles and arm crosses. You should then do the exercises one at a time in a circuit, then rest for a minute and do the circuit all over again.

Explosive press ups are one of the toughest and hard core types of exercise you can do, although they are also really simple and easy to do. They work out your chest, arms, shoulders and core at the same time. To do them, put down a yoga or Pilates mat and get into a plank position, making sure that your hands are slightly wider than your shoulders and your knees resting on the floor. Lower yourself down to the ground in a controlled way and then explosively push up so hard that your hands leave the ground.

Everyone enjoys sex, but is that where the benefits to your wellness end? Absolutely not! Let’s take a look at some of the scientifically proven ways in which sex is good for you:

1. Exercise: Sexual health expert and private GP Dr Arun Ghosh argues that sex is ‘not emphasised enough as a really good form of exercise.’ If you make it last long enough, Graham Jackson, a consultant cardiologist and president of The Sexual Advice Association, asserts that sex could form part of your overall, varied fitness programme. ‘A typical game of tennis or squash is around 40 minutes of sustained cardiovascular activity,’ he points out. ‘So to compare these to sex in fitness benefits you would need to perform your peak periods of sex for around the same amount of time.’ A vigorous 30 to 40 minutes means ‘you could get a good cardiovascular workout during sex,’ Dr Jackson adds. ‘Sexual activity is meant to compliment other more sustained forms of exercise. You can’t say, “I have sex, I won’t exercise”.’

2. Brain Function: Scientists at the University of Maryland found that rats’ brain function improved after long periods of sexual activity, specifically in the hippocampus area where new memories are formed. According to Dr. Ghosh, ‘A huge amount of brain stimulus occurs during intercourse. It’s why we feel so overtaken when we orgasm. When researchers do MRI scans on people in orgasm, they observe both sides of the brain being stimulated, including parts of the brain we wouldn’t normally use.’ However, as the study was done on rats, we still don’t know if the same results would be found in people. Dr Simon Ridley, of the Alzheimer’s Research Council, notes, ‘Plus, any improvements in brain power were lost once the animals’ sexual activity stopped, so we can’t assume any benefits to their brains will be long-term…There’s as yet still no compelling evidence to support the idea that regular sex can help stave off dementia or cognitive decline in humans.’

3. Stronger Pelvic Floor: Not only does a strong pelvic floor make sex itself more enjoyable; Andrew Hextall, a consultant who specialises in genito-urinary medicine at Spire Bushey Hospital, points out that, a stronger pelvic floor can help reduce your risk of prolapse of the womb, which affects half of women over 50, and your risk of stress incontinence, which affects one in four women over 40. Mr Hextall explains, ‘During intercourse, the muscles in a woman’s pelvic floor naturally contract and squeeze. This increases muscle tone in the area, as the pelvic floor is like any other muscle, it responds to use by getting stronger. The recommendation for exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor are to squeeze the pelvic floor only eight times at any one time. It’s likely that during sex you will be contracting your pelvic floor at least that many times, so there’s no need for prolonged sex sessions to get these benefits.’

4. Lower Anxiety and Depression: A study published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour discovered that young women felt more depressed the longer they hadn’t had sex. Stuart Brody, professor of psychology specialising in sexual behaviour at the University of the West of Scotland, surmises that this could be because of the vaginal absorption of hormones in semen such as prostaglandins, testosterone and luteinizing hormone, which improves women’s moods. Dr Ghosh details, ‘Routinely now, when our patients – male or female – are diagnosed with depression or anxiety we encourage them to maintain their sex lives because it’s so beneficial for mental wellbeing’.

Once you reach a certain age, you can feel like you’re done with wellness. After all, dieting and exercise is just for young people trying to look good, right? Wrong. According to Suzy Boerboom‎, ‎Co-Founder/CEO/Franchisor of Welcyon Fitness, ‘We don’t stop moving because we grow old, we grow old because we stop moving. Many people assume that they’re too out-of-shape, or sick, or tired, or just plain old to exercise, so they avoid it completely. Others believe they should lower the intensity of their exercise due to compromised balance, coordination and strength that come with age. They’re wrong. The real danger to your health is not exercising at all. At any age, you can increase muscle strength, preserve bone density, improve balance and improve your overall health. However, only a combination of regular exercise and sensible eating can help you achieve this, so don’t let your age scare you away from the gym.’ So how can you improve your wellbeing and fitness as you age?

1. Add Strength Training to Your Workout Routine: Boerboom points out, ‘Most folks hit the gym and head straight for the treadmill. And while cardio exercise is vital to long-lasting health, it’s the strength-training that helps you maintain and regain strength and improve metabolism so that you burn calories for much longer after workouts. (Adults over 50 can lose around a half a pound of muscle mass every year). Before joining a gym, ask how the staff will help you get into a routine. Give preference to clubs that help create a workout program based on your goals.’

2. Don’t Neglect Stretching and Balance: ‘As we get into our 50s and beyond, it’s even more important to include stretching and balance exercises in our routine,’ Boerboom asserts. ‘As age increases, bodies don’t start up or wind down as quickly. Prior to a full workout, adults over 50 need to warm-up for at least five minutes in order to increase blood flow to muscles and loosen tendons. Your club should show you how to include stretching and balance exercises as part of your workout programme.’

3. Learn How to Eat Well: Boerboom notes, ‘It’s easy to say eat more spinach and less cookies, but the fact is most people don’t know where to start when it comes to devising a healthy diet – or how to sustain healthy eating habits beyond a couple of weeks. That’s why you should give serious thought to working with a registered dietician who can not only put you on a nutrition and meal plan that speaks to your needs and goals, but can provide ongoing counselling to keep you motivated, accountable and on the path to success. Some clubs offer this service, though most charge extra. Ask before you join.’

4. Get a Workout Buddy: ‘You’re more likely to stick with an exercise programme if you work out regularly with a friend,’ Boerboom explains. ‘This helps keep each of you accountable and motivated – you’re likely to look forward to hitting the gym on a regular basis. That’s why it’s important to ask a health club about its guest policies. You’ll want to introduce potential partners to your gym – but some of them will charge you a guest fee and many won’t put your guests through sample workouts; they’ll be on their own. The easier a club makes it for guests to “sample” your club, the more likely the two of you will start and stick to a routine together.’

5. Keep Learning: Boerboom asks, ‘How do you learn to exercise more effectively, eat right, get more and better sleep, keep your brain sharp and so on? Some health clubs put on a regular series of wellness seminars and workshops to address topics like these and provide information that can help you live healthier. Social events too may be offered, helping you connect with others and get more enjoyment from your membership. When evaluating health clubs, ask if these types of workshops and social events are part of your membership.’

Exercise may not be high on your radar when it comes to commitment, but you may be more inclined to hit the gym when you discover this interesting fact: exercise can offer a number of health benefits, and it also improves your sex life. For example, it helps to lower the risk of erectile dysfunction by opening the arteries which supply the blood flow to your penis. In a study carried out by the Harvard School of Public Health of more than 31,000 men who were over the age of 50, those who were physically active were less likely to be impotent than those who weren’t. Even moderate levels of exercise can help to offer such benefits, such as a brisk 30-minute walk each day of the week. Research has even shown that exercise can reverse the symptoms of ED. Physically active men also have fewer symptoms of an enlarged prostate than men who don’t exercise. Men with BPH often feel the need to urinate more frequently or have a weak stream or urine, but exercise can cut their risk of developing of this by simply keeping fit. There’s no exercise in particular which works best for BPH, but getting 30 minutes of solid exercise most days of the week is often enough to see positive results. If you’re trying to have kids, or think you may want to in the future, keeping fit is vital for the quality of your semen – a recent study showed that men who work out at least 15 hours a week had higher sperm counts than inactive men. So if you’re more inclined to lift the TV remote than a dumbbell, you may want to change your habits. Men who watched more than 20 hours of TV a week had significantly lower sperm counts than men who watched no TV – something to consider for men who want a family!

Of course, it’s not just your health to consider (although that’s a pretty important factor). There’s also your ability in the bedroom itself. When it comes to the strict matter of sex, fitter men have the advantage over couch potatoes. Men in good shape will find sex easier and less painful than men who don’t exercise very much. For example, you’ll notice the effects after having sex in your abdominal muscles and your hips. But if you exercise regularly, these effects won’t be noticed as the muscles will already be stronger and more flexible. Likewise, if you’re partial to the missionary position, you may find that your chest muscles are achey after sex. Exercise not only lowers the risk of a muscular injury after a particularly passionate sex session, but it also helps you to feel more confident and energised both in and out of the bedroom. This can improve your sex life significantly, as you’ll feel good about yourself which can improve both how you see yourself and how your partner sees you. You’ll be more relaxed and less distracted, as well as less likely to suffer sexual problems, as stated above. The best exercise routine for a great sex life is a well-rounded regimen which sees you improve your strength, cardio and flexibility training. So if you want to become a better lover, as well as healthier in the process, it seems the answer is simple – hit the gym on a regular basis and you’ll be seeing positive results in no time.

Whether you’re 18 or you’re 80, everyone likes sex and deserves to enjoy it. So how do you keep the good loving going once you’re past your physical prime?

1. Let’s Get Physical: Not only is exercise good for your overall wellbeing; it also works wonders for your sexual health. Exercise helps with physical wellness issues, such as energy and stamina, as well as improving your sense of body image. If you find sex not-so enjoyable, Kegel exercises can help both men and women get more out sex, improving the functioning of your sexual organs and improving your bladder control at the same time. Just make sure you speak to your physician before engaging in a rigorous exercise programme, especially if you have an existing condition or you’re taking certain medications. This leads us nicely onto…

2. Doctor, Doctor: If you suffer from physical limitations or the effects of certain illnesses or medications, you may need to make a few accommodations in order to enjoy sex. Talk with your doctor about any changes that concern you, and he or she can help you make the necessary changes. You can still can enjoy full, satisfying sex lives if you have a heart condition, although most doctors recommend that you abstain from sex for a brief time following a heart attack. If you have angina, ask your doctor about taking nitroglycerin before you have sex, but refrain from taking erectile dysfunction medication if you are using nitroglycerin.

3. Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby: Communication is key when changes occur to your body. As people age, you lose oestrogen while your partner loses testosterone. These hormonal changes may lead to changes in libido, but your partner won’t know what’s going on in your body until you tell him. Not only can openly discussing your concerns and what you’re experiencing emotionally and physically help you both to find a solution; the sheer act of open, vulnerable communication can bring you closer and help you both enjoy sex and intimacy all the more.

4. Take Me Out: Sex and sexuality communicate a great deal: affection, love, esteem, warmth, sharing and bonding. These gifts are as much the right of older adults as they are of those who are younger, so why not take a leaf out of young peoples’ book? Go out on a date to the movies or to dinner, or just suggest you go for a walk. Quality time helps you to focus on intimacy and physical touch, so hark back to your younger selves and hold hands, hug and show affection.

5. Afternoon Delight: If you find that you’re too tired to have sex at night anymore, try trying it on with your partner in the morning or the afternoon when you have more energy. A low libido can make you want to get things over with quickly, but taking your time and spending longer on foreplay can increase vaginal lubrication and boost your level of desire. If uncomfortable sex is putting you off, try using a lubricant. There are loads of sexual factors to play with, such as mood, lighting and sensual exercises – so try something new to get in the mood.

6. Safety Dance: Research shows that rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis have doubled for people in their 50s, 60s and 70s in the past decade, due to the lack of fear of pregnancy. However, condoms are vital for protecting you against STDs, so it’s important to practice safe sex with every new partner.

Everyone wants a toned stomach that they’re not ashamed of showing off at the beach, but wanting one and getting one are two very different things. Unfortunately, getting a toned stomach takes a little bit of effort, but the good news is that these exercises are simple to learn, helping you get there that little bit quicker. Mix up the exercises regularly so as to keep your body guessing and your muscles developing all the time.

Reverse curl

This exercise requires a medicine or Swiss ball, the latter of which is easier to use so if you want a challenge you should use a medicine ball. Lie on your back, holding the Swiss ball between your calves and thighs. With the ball firmly between your legs, pull your knees up towards your chest and squeeze your lower ab muscles. If you want to improve your stability, use your arms by keeping them flat on the floor.

The plank

Begin by lying flat on your stomach, placing your forearms on the floor, then press down through your forearms to push yourself up. Use your toes as a support until your neck, back and legs are all aligned. This is fantastic for toning your stomach, as it strengthens your inner core muscles and burns more calories while you’re doing it than many other stomach exercises, because you’re using other parts of your body to achieve it.

Boat pose

The boat pose is perfect if you want to try something a little tougher to get that toned stomach. This yoga pose will quickly whip you into shape. Begin by sitting on the floor with bent knees, then lean back slightly and bring your legs up, straightening them until your body forms a V shape. Your arms should be stretched out and parallel to one another; keep your palms facing inwards. Engage your abs while you do this and keep your stomach relaxed and flat. This tones your lower stomach, which can be a tricky area to tone up.

Mountain climber

Begin by getting into the plank position and pull your right knee inwards towards your chest, then straighten your leg and return to the starting position. Repeat the exercise using your left leg. This is good not just for getting a cardiovascular exercise but also for engaging your core, so it’s perfect for burning fat and building stronger muscles.

Medicine ball slam

You will need a non-bouncing medicine ball for this exercise; using both hands, lift the ball above your head and place your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees slightly and then explosively bring the ball down, bending at the waist and throw it on the floor. You shouldn’t lose your balance or posture during this exercise. You need to maintain a strong core and ensure you engage your abs at all times to keep this area of your body strong and toned.

Bicycle crunch

This is a must if you want a flat stomach, so begin by lying on your back and place your palms beneath your head. Lift your legs until they are positioned at a 90-degree angle. Keep your right hand on your head, twist your body, and bring your right elbow towards your left knee. Alternate then, bringing your left elbow toward your right knee. Do not rush this exercise – it needs to be performed slowly in order for you to really feel the benefit. This is ideal for toning your abs and obliques.

Every runner should understand how important it is to keep their feet protected with high-quality running shoes in order to avoid injury. However, not every runner knows the signs that they need to pick up a new pair. These three tell-tale signs of wear are your cue to invest in a new pair of running shoes.

Track Your Mileage

Many runners track their mileage for personal reasons. Doing this can also help you know when it is time to replace your shoes. Most podiatrists recommend replacing running shoes every 400 to 600 miles, but this figure depends on a variety of different factors. According to Dr. Thomas Rambacher, every time you take a stride while running, the force is equal to three times that of your body weight. If your shoes are not absorbing the impact properly, you can experience foot, ankle, leg, and even hip injuries as a result. It is important to take your weight, stride, and speed into account, as well as the type of terrain you run on. A heavier person will naturally create more impact while running than a lighter individual. Thus, they would need to replace their shoes more frequently.

Inspect the Midsole

The midsole of a running shoe provides much-needed cushion to your feet, and protects the fragile bones in them from damage. If you take a look at the side of the midsole, you may notice a few wrinkles or lines, which are considered normal signs of wear. However, if there are many lines present, and overlapping ones, it is time to get new running shoes. Too many wrinkles and lines mean that your midsole is thoroughly worn and is no longer able to cushion your feet effectively.

Don’t Ignore Pain

Many runners ignore foot pain, assuming that it naturally occurs after a run. While this common belief does have some truth to it, your shoes also play a big role. If you are experiencing more discomfort than usual, your shoes may be the culprit. Try on different styles of running shoes, and compare the difference in how your feet feel to your old pair. If the support and level fo comfort is noticeable, it’s time to invest in a new pair of running shoes. A podiatrist can help you find the right type of shoes based on your arch, build, and other needs.

Every runner relies on their shoes to keep their feet protected. However, when your shoes are running low on life, you can be putting yourself at a higher risk of injury. Determine when you need to invest in new shoes with these strategies.
