As a gender, men can be fairly indifferent towards things like health and wellbeing until something happens which touches them directly. It can be tricky to get them thinking seriously about improving the way they leave their lives and if you’re trying to achieve this in a work environment you’ve got a serious challenge ahead of you! Part of the reason for the lack of concern could well be that, in general, men are much less serious and coming at things with an austere authority can put them off. This doesn’t mean that they won’t confront serious issues or that they’re incapable of tackling the tough things, it just means that you’ll need to try and different tactic when it comes to engaging them.
Something which has had great success in the past is Movember, which is a month set aside for all things men’s health. It takes place in the month of November and it involves men growing a moustache over the course of the whole month, many will take sponsors and donate the money to many men’s health charities (prostate cancers etc). Over the past couple of years Movember has become much more popular and it’s raised millions for charities and health groups across the world.
The reason it’s so popular is that it’s fun and light hearted but still tackles some serious issues. Men compete to see who can grow the largest or the wackiest moustache and in doing so they become walking adverts for the campaign and everything it stands for. Men are encouraged to talk about their health and wellbeing in this time and, as people understand how important the issues tackled in Movember are, they’re much more likely too then they generally would be.
Give it a go in your office this year and let us know how it goes! If you’ve got any stories from previous Movembers to share, we’d love to hear them!
