The festive season is notoriously packed with rich food and sugary treats, from chocolates and alcohol to decadent savoury dishes. It is during this time, though, that people suffering with diabetes need to be careful what they eat to make sure that they stay healthy. This is easily achieved through planning ahead, maintaining an exercise regime and portion control.
As those with diabetes will know, it is important to eat a balanced and healthy diet, as well as remembering to check your blood sugar levels and take your medicines – keeping to this set of rules will reduce the risk of any health concerns, such as high blood pressure and the risk of a stroke. The symptoms of diabetes include blurred vision, fatigue and the need to urinate frequently.
During the festive season, it can be particularly difficult to avoid the wealth of rich and decadent foods that are on offer. But those with diabetes needn’t limit themselves to a diet of fruit and vegetables. It is fine to indulge in the sweet treats and tasty meals, but don’t overdo it and keep your portion sizes to a minimum. It’s tempting to skip a meal to make up for a bigger meal later, but this isn’t an option for diabetes sufferers – planning meals ahead so you know what you can eat throughout the day is important so that you maintain a healthy blood sugar level.
It is also not advised to up your medicine to compensate for sugary treats, as the side effects could be extremely dangerous. A safer option is to simply get ahead of the game and plan your meals in advance so you can factor in the odd indiscretion without putting yourself at risk. The holidays are a difficult time for anyone trying to maintain a strict eating plan, but with some forward planning you can enjoy the festive season without having to worry.
