A hang glider leaping from High Point on Lookout Mountain in Golden was killed Friday after a crash, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.

The unidentified man was one of two gliders who took off at about 3:30 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office. The second hang glider landed safely at the bottom of the mountain.

Multiple eyewitnesses on Colorado 93 saw the crash and notified the Sheriff’s Office.

Hang gliding has been done off of Lookout Mountain since the 1960s; according to the Rocky Mountain Hang Gliding & Paragliding Association, Lookout has “restricted” landing fields. Owned by the Colorado School of Mines and the City of Golden, only qualified pilots are allowed to use the area.
