Unlike sharks’ teeth, our adult teeth are with us our entire lives. Because the bite is so perfectly shaped to do its duty for both tearing and chewing, we don’t have the luxury of continually growing back up teeth. This makes it all the more important to really take care of our teeth.
Soft Bristles
Even though toothbrushes come with hard bristles, stick with soft. You should never brush harder than you would the skin of a tomato. Keeping it soft means the enamel and the gums are not damaged during brushing. In addition, be sure to replace the brush about every three months. The tips of the bristles become blunted over time, causing injury to the gums and teeth.
Food and Drink
Avoid sugars and avoid soda. Both are absolutely terrible for the teeth. They promote the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth that eventually cause decay and plaque buildup. Both culprits also damage the enamel, making it sensitive and much more prone to cavities. If you do continue ingesting both, make it a habit to brush and floss immediately after eating.
Floss
So many people fight it, but the fact remains that flossing is essential to long lasting, healthy teeth. The brush can’t reach between the teeth, allowing bacteria to build up. By taking floss to those areas at least once per day, you disrupt the rampant growth and prevent such things as cavities, tooth decay and plaque buildup. It also stimulates the gums, keeping them healthy. Be sure to use a fresh section of floss for each tooth, otherwise you’re simply transferring one set of bacteria to an entirely new area.
Don’t Smoke
Smoking is harmful for an innumerable amount of reasons, not the least of which is severe damage to the teeth and jaw. The tar and nicotine dye the teeth that unsightly yellow smokers are known to have while slowly destroying the gums. It also creates an environment that is perfect for the growth of bacteria which inevitably leads to tooth loss and, in some cases, oral cancer.

Nearly 50% of the population avoids the dentist for one reason or another.
