Asthma is a condition which most people overlook as fairly benign and not that dangerous. This is largely due to it being fairly common and something which most people will have come into contact with at least once in their lives. Provided it’s planned around and treated with respect then it’s unlikely to hurt or damage an asthmatic that much at all but all it takes is one slip up. One singular day of forgetting your inhaler, one missed refill and then a severe asthma attack can kill. Without the corticosteroids which the inhaler uses, the airways will inflame and seal shut, suffocating an asthmatic and killing them.

There are a lot of treatments available to asthmatics and though the condition is chronic and will be with most patients for their whole lives, it’s easily manageable. Recent studies into asthma have shown a specific genetic marker which occurs in certain asthmatic patients. Those patients don’t respond as well to the more traditional treatments for asthma. That means that treatment which can work perfectly on some people may actually make the conditions of others far worse and lower their quality of life by exacerbating their asthma.

This marker, having been identified is going to be the key to solving the quality of life issue. After a quick and painless test, asthmatics who are found to have it will be given a slightly different treatment to the rest. It’s still highly effective and will help treat the symptoms of asthma but it’ll do so without any of the negative side effects which the other drug had on these asthmatics. This should treat their condition which improving their quality of life at the same time! Great news for certain asthmatics and a massive step in the right direction for the general treatment of this condition!
