It’s a common sexual health problem, but for men, growing breasts can have a hugely negative effect on their emotional wellness and wellbeing. Men develop breast-like protrusions for a number of reasons, including a simple case of storing excess fat in the chest area. Body fat can be stored underneath the wall of your chest, which pushes the pectoral area out the way.
Some medications, such as the treatment for cancer (chemotherapy), antidepressants, antibiotics and heart drugs can also make your breasts become larger. Using street drugs such as heroin, marijuana and steroids, plus alcohol, can also cause you to develop breasts.
There are ways that you can help to get rid of these so called ‘man boobs’, though, and keep them off for good. One of the best ways is to do exercise on a regular basis. If your man breasts are due to carrying excess weight, doing regular exercise will also help you to lower your body fat, which should help reduce the size of your chest. Healthy weight loss is around one or two pounds per week. Strength training on top of this can help to build up the muscles in your chest which can give your pectoral area a more firm and muscular look.
Alongside exercise, you should also aim to follow a low-calorie diet in order to lose weight. Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about your calorie intake. Your daily calorie limit depends on your current age and weight, so your doctor should be able to tell you roughly what you should be eating every day.
You should also ask your doctor to help you find out whether your medication could be causing the growth of breast. Your doctor (or a local pharmacist) will be able to tell you if growing breasts could be a symptom of any of the medications that you take on a regular basis.
If you want to improve your cardio fitness but don’t like going on a treadmill, there is another way. You can boost your wellness and wellbeing through a weight-room cardio workout. Lifting weights can get your blood pumping, and using total-body resistance moves that wear out your muscles can be a fantastic way to tone up and raise your heart rate at the same time.
Circuit training is one of the best ways to do this, as it is done at a fast pace and includes only short rest breaks, so that your heart starts pounding and keeps up a good pace in the metabolic cardio-boosting zone. Do the exercises with a set of dumbbells (around five or ten pounds each to start with) and do as many reps as you can within a minute, moving on to another exercise without stopping.
A great move to try is a squat to overhead press. You do this by holding a pair of dumbbells at about shoulder height, with your feet hip-width apart. Lower into a squat while pushing your hips back and keeping your chest upright. Your knees should be above your toes but not over them at the front as this is very bad for the knees. Push through your heels and return to a standing position with the dumbbells pushed up into the air overhead. Then lower the weights to your shoulders and sink down into another squat. This is one rep.
A bent over wide row can also be great for your cardio fitness. Lean slightly forward and hold a dumbbell in each hand, with your feet a little wider than hip distance apart. Hold your hands at your chest and then push out with your hands (not down) and then pull back into your chest as if rowing a boat.
It is a common myth that you cannot lose weight, improve your fitness and have a better bust. People think that any kind of exercise will automatically reduce your breast size, and that this is simply the price you have to pay for improving your wellness and wellbeing.
In addition to this is the fact that breasts do tend to decline with age. The good news is that there are some very effective moves that you can try that will actually help to improve or maintain the size and ‘perkiness’ of your chest.
Many women don’t think to tone the pectoral muscles, as they are somewhat hidden from view, and this can contribute to breast sagging and lead to weakness in the upper body.
An incline chest fly is one of the best ways to help build some good strong pectoral muscles. To do this, you need to grasp a dumbbell in each hand and sit on an incline bench. Raise your arms up so that they are straight above your chest, and your palms are facing each other (but make sure the weights are not touching). Then, slowly move your arms down until they are nearly parallel with the floor, and then push your arms back up. Be sure to maintain a slight bend in the elbow throughout the exercise.
A chest press is also a useful way to help improve the shape of your chest. For this one, you need to grasp the dumbbells and lean back on the incline bench again. Hold each one and make sure that your elbows are bent and your forearms are perpendicular to the floor, Push the dumbbells up in the air, straight above your chest. Make sure that you have someone on hand to ‘spot’ you in case things get too heavy.
