Kangana Ranaut, who has emerged as the Queen of women-centric movies, is now set to impress the audience with her modern-day free-spirited role in Katti Batti. Having unveiled the film’s trailer, the actress managed to keep the mystery alive about its narrative and her character.

The trailer of the movie, which also stars Imran Khan, was unveiled here on Sunday.

Talking about the film, Kangana said, “It is a love story, which might not end up like a love story! The way this film unfolds, it is non-linear, it is really hard to give you an idea of what’s it’s actually about, especially my character in the film.”

Katti Batti features Imran as a young architect, Madhav Kabra, and Kangana as the free-spirited Payal.

Dropping more hints about the film, Kangana said, “It’s not about pregnancy. I don’t play a double role, I don’t play a Punjabi girl, I don’t play an NRI, nor do I get bored in the film, so no such things. There is no genre to the movie. The beauty of the film is that it is very intriguing. Revealing too much right now will take away fun and we really don’t want to take that away.”

Directed by Nikhil Advani and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur under UTV Motion Pictures, the film will hit theatres on September 18.

She may not ascribe to titles but actress Kangana Ranaut certainly knows how to hold the court and hold forth like royalty. When asked at the trailer launch of Katti Batti who’s the real queen of Bollywood without skipping a beat Kangana replied, “Is Bollywood a country. That’s a lame question.”

On the subject of royalty, Kangana certainly channeled a King and I vibe a la Deborah Kerr, a dramatic choice for a rainy day. Kangana explained the outfit and said, “It’s a Sunday. You all were coming. I wanted to make it worth it for you all. I could have chosen to wear jeans and a t-shirt but this is just for you guys so you can get good pictures.”

Co-star Imran Khan looked rather dapper as well. Even if his career hasn’t shaped up as well as his sharp suits over the past two years.

Imran said, “I’m glad that I got this break. I needed to spend time with my family. My wife was pregnant, my daughter was born. These are things that happen once or twice in a lifetime, if you’re lucky. There’s no way I would give that up. I’m happy that I was there. That being said I’m also very happy that I’m back at work because I love to make movies.”

Considering the positive reviews that Katti Batti is receiving, it seems that like R Madhavan in Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Imran could be poised for his big comeback courtesy the ‘Queen‘.

Of which Kangana, defending Imran, said, “It’s a love story and both of us have equally important parts. May be Imran has more screen space but that doesn’t mean anyone’s character is weak.”

While Kangana can afford to be kind with co-stars, does talk of rivals ruffle her feathers? When asked about the status of her sometimes frosty sometimes friendly relationship with actress Deepika Padukone, she said with a serene smile, “It’s Katti Batti.”

Tanu Weds Manu Returns star Kangana Ranaut has stepped on the other side of the camera for her upcoming film Katti Batti. She has directed the first seven minutes of Nikhil Advani’s upcoming project, in which she will be sharing screen space with actor Imran Khan.

The Queen actress took cinematographer Tushar Kantiray’s blessings and offered him Re 1 to allow her to use the camera.

“It’s a seven-minute uncut sequence. I had to shoot it by holding the camera in my hands which was the demand of the script. It was nerve-racking, but actors can do anything for a director who shows trust and faith in their abilities. Nikhil (Advani) is one such director,” Kangana said in a statement.

Kal Ho Na Ho director Nikhil Advani is really impressed with the Tanu Weds Manu actress.

“One of my favourite scenes in the film is one in which Kangana’s character is shooting Imran (Khan) playfully with an iPad. I wanted the scene to be authentic and organic so Tushar (Kantiray) suggested that we should allow the actress to shoot it herself,” said Nikhil.

“The lighting was completed, the set was cleared out and Kangana has shot the scene like a pro, adding one more talent to her already overflowing basket,” added the D-Day director.

The box office success of Queen, Piku and Tanu Weds Manu Returns may point towards an increase in acceptance of women-centric films, but director Aanand L Rai said that such movies, though few and far between, always did well.

The director, known for his opinionated and headstrong female characters be it Raanjhanaa‘s Zoya (Sonam Kapoor) or Tanu Weds Manu‘s Tanuja (Kangana Ranaut) and now her lookalike Datto, said viewers were always receptive to such stories, it is just that filmmakers stopped making them.

“I think we have started believing in our audience now. We have always underestimated them. Such movies were always there be it Mother India, Chalbaaz or Chandni Bar. We don’t make such stories but whenever we do, they are successful. The audience wants to watch a good story. You need to tell it properly,” he told PTI.

Though actresses in Aanand L Rai’s films have equal screen space as their male counterparts, the director said he does not do it consciously.

“I tell a story. If I start thinking that I have to bring equality between male and female characters in my films then it means I am actually not considering them equal. Women are equal to men and there should be no debate over this. I know there are problems but they are everywhere. We just have to get together, protect our society and see women in correct light,” he said.

For his latest film, starring Kangana and R Madhavan, he travelled to Haryana as the actress also played the role of a young Haryanvi girl studying in Delhi University and the director was amazed to see the confidence and spirit of women there.

“They are very confident. We look at them from here and think that they are poor and helpless but they’re fighting. In fact, they have fought most of their battles without anyone doing anything for them. They have a great sense of humour. They will make you laugh. I captured that spirit and put it in Kangana’s role,” he said.
