Puberty doesn’t just affect your sexual health – i.e. get your body ready for making babies – it also impacts your overall wellbeing. Out of nowhere, your jeans no longer fit, your legs rub together when you run and pores are taking over your face – what’s happening to you? If you’ve ever felt out of step with your body, you’re not alone.

Some of the changes that come with growing up are pretty cool. Guys become more muscular, and girls start developing breast – all things we appreciate. However, before, during and after puberty, your body goes through other changes you might not expect, and this can take its toll on your wellness. You notice that your bum and stomach starts to grow, or you find that you’re suddenly taller and skinnier than you once were. Sometimes, you get a temporary layer of fat during puberty, and this is so your body can prepare itself for a growth spurt. Other people find they fill out permanently, even if they exercise and eat healthy foods. Then there are those who chow down on everything in sight and still stay skinny.

Eventually, all these changes balance out and you adjust to your new body, but it can get some getting used to the way it moves and works. What happens to you physically during puberty can influence how you feel about your body and yourself for a long time to come. It’s perfectly normal to be worried or even upset by the changes you go through; lots of teens base their self-image on how their bodies feel and perform. Even minor details, such as the way you smell, change when you go through puberty, and this is a perfectly normal part of growing up. Still, there are things you can do to help yourself adjust physically and emotionally.

1. Don’t compare: It’s natural to look at your friends for comparison, but it’s not a good idea. Everyone develops differently and at different times, meaning that there’s no point comparing yourself to others. You might have had a growth spurt before everyone else and think you’re too tall, but your friends are probably thinking they’re too small. It’s usually hardest for the people who develop first or last. Also, don’t compare yourself to celebrities and models. With clever airbrushing, hair and makeup, anyone looks that good in the media. In reality, however, no one looks that good.

2. Treat your body well: Part of developing a mind and life of your own means making educated choices about food and exercise. Plus, if you eat right and exercise, you can take some control over how your body turns out. Exercise also boosts your mood, which can be helpful if your changing body has you feeling sad or confused. You don’t have to join a gym or start an insane fitness regime; just go for a walk, play with your dog, or throw a Frisbee with your friends to reap the mood-boosting benefits of exercise. Taking yoga, martial arts classes, or other activities that involve focusing on how the body stretches and moves can help you become familiar with your body.

3. Befriend your body: It takes time to get to know your new body, much in the same way that your relationships with your friends evolve and grow. Just like you know your friends’ secrets, you also see a side to your body that no one else does. However, that doesn’t mean you know your body, or see it accurately. You can spend ages focusing on your sticking-out stomach in the mirror, but all this time you spend obsessing actually distorts your view of reality. The truth is, other people won’t notice it like you do.

There are certain myths that surround ‘fancy’ rock and sea salts with regard to how they’re ‘better’ for your wellbeing. Claims are made that gourmet salts contain less sodium than table salt, or more minerals which are essential for your wellness. You might believe that your weight loss success is improved by switching to gourmet salts, as they taste better or stronger so you can use less. There are more of these theories about the benefits of gourmet salts, but the Consensus Action on Salt and Health, or CASH, has proven that there is not one jot of evidence to prove these, and gourmet salts are just as damaging to your health as regular salt.

A CASH survey looked at 7 supermarket and online salt products, including 1 table salt.  According to CASH, nearly 100% of the rock and sea salts surveyed were accounted for by sodium chloride. This is just the technical word for salt which means that gourmet salts are just cleverly marketed seasonings that are no different from table salt.

Further, a Which? member survey showed that of the people who buy rock and sea salt, 24% believe it is healthier and 39% think it’s more natural than table salt. Natural is a word that gets banded about during healthy marketing strategies, but all salts are technically natural as they are all made of sodium chloride, but this is a metallic substance which is not healthy. The combination of sodium and chloride, which forms salt, can raise your blood pressure which can lead to an increased risk of stroke, heart failure and heart disease, osteoporosis, stomach cancer and kidney disease.

Even though a lot of TV chefs sing the praises of rock and sea salts, some chefs, including Antony Worrall Thompson, Levi Roots, Gordon Ramsay and Raymond Blanc all support CASH. According to a press release from Professor Graham MacGregor, Chairman of CASH, ‘It is disgraceful that [some] chefs still encourage people to use so much sea and rock salt. This has the added danger that, as the crystal sizes are much larger and don’t taste as salty, more salt is consumed.  Reducing salt intake by just by one gram per day is predicted to prevent over 6,000 deaths from strokes and heart attacks a year.’

Therefore, it is unnecessary to pay the 22 fold difference in price for premium sea salt, which retails at £1.80 per 100g as opposed to table salt which comes in at just 8p. Consuming too much salt damages your wellness, but too much gourmet salt also damages the wellness of your wallet!

Salt has Same Effect on Your Wellness, Regardless of Price

If you’re expecting a baby then you’ve probably been doing all sorts of things to prepare yourself for your big day. Maybe you’ve been reading some books on the subject or you’re attending a birthing class, some perspective mothers might join a pregnant ladies group and meet others in the same situation. One decision which may cause a couple of issues early on is the choice between the traditional bassinet and the portable cot/crib. There are pros and cons to both items and it’s really down to the individual parent to make up his/her mind on what suits their family best.

Bassinets are probably the more attractive option. They’ve got frilly skirts and lacy material which look great and can draw in perspective parents. The general level of comfort in a bassinet is generally higher than in that of a crib as the mattress is often thicker in the bassinet as it doesn’t have to fold away.
The issue with bassinets is that they’re large and somewhat difficult to manoeuvre. Taking them from room to room is fine but transporting them via car or just in general can be a bit of a struggle. Another important factor which should aid in your considerations is that bassinets are only usable for the first 4 months of a child’s life, after this they can climb over the edges and the bassinet becomes very unsafe.

The portable cot/crib might be a little less comfortable or aesthetically pleasing but it’s easy to transport and lasts for a lot longer than the bassinet. You can fold it up into a very small size and then pop it in the boot of your car so it can come with you wherever you go without much fuss. Portable cots/cribs sometimes have adjustable settings which allow the mattress or height of the system to be altered to best suit you and your child.
