Let’s be honest – looking at celebrity weight loss photos is a secret guilty pleasure for most of us! Studying those before and after photos and reading about how they achieved this – be it through fitness, crazy diets or surgery – is quite addictive.

Most of us assume that you’d need an enormous paycheque to get the same look of wellness and wellbeing, but is that really the case? We’ve looked at a few of the weight loss techniques that have been put in place by celebrities and assessed how healthy and pricey they really are.

Diana DeGarmo, for example, has been following a five factor diet, which consists of five small meals on six days of the week, and one day where you cheat and eat whatever you want. Diana is an ex contestant on American idol and shrank three dress sizes in just two months with this healthy and achievable diet.

Valerie Bertinelli has been following a three meal and three snack a day plan. This is portion control at its very best and really doesn’t cost much. The celebrity has shed 25 pounds using this method.

Arden Myrin, the TV comic, has shed 30 pounds all of her own accord by simply sticking to a three meal a day plan and avoiding flour and sugar altogether. No snacks are allowed on this diet, and although it is affordable, skipping the snacks could actually slow down metabolism in the long run.

Robin Quivers tried out a plan which invited him to lose 21 pounds in 21 days – and he surpassed it by three pounds. Results like these are unpredictable, though, and losing a great deal of weight in a very short space of time can actually lead to further gain in the long run.

Celebrities are well known for their perfect bodies. It seems to be a part of the celebrity culture, or indeed perhaps just as a more general point of what it takes to become a star these days, that if you want the media spotlight, you need to be in great shape. But the world of celebrities can be one that often seems alien to our own, they seem to be able to stick to diets that we can’t imagine and stay slim throughout their careers. So we’ve decided to lift the lid on the reality of celebrity dieting and the way that the A-list stars keep themselves in shape. Let’s take a look:

Beyoncé

Beyoncé is well known for her slim yet curvy body that she has had all the way through her beginnings with Destiny’s Child through her acting roles including the Austin Powers movie and also her solo singing career that saw her release hits such as Crazy In Love and Irreplaceable. So how does she keep that amazing figure through her success? She owes it to hula hooping and plenty of other different cardio workouts. Hula hooping actually works out a surprising number of muscles, not only tightening your waist, but also strengthening your core and improves your leg muscles. It also helps with toning and flexibility.

Katy Perry

Another star who is famous for her perfect figure, Katy Perry is known for her ability to look amazing in highly revealing and skin-tight clothes. But it is well known that she is not a fan of going to the gym, so if she wants to stay in shape how does she do it? Katy says that the most important part of her workout is skipping. Skipping is known as an excellent way of staying in shape, it is used by top boxers as a part of their routine, although for Katy she likes it because of the rhythmic nature and the fact that it is almost like dancing while working out. It is a fantastic cardio workout that also helps to improve co-ordination and endurance.

Scarlet Johansson

Being naturally beautifully, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Scarlet Johansson might not need to put in an awful lot of effort to keep herself in the public eye. But she is also well known for her devotion and the fact that she puts in the hard work to stay in shape. In fact, recent roles have seen her pushing a more action-packed and physical aspect of her performing, and indeed in The Avengers movie, she dons a skin-tight leather suit, so it was important for her to be looking her best. To do this she uses kettleballs. Kettleballs are bowling ball-size weights with a handle on top, they are great for sculpting your muscles but also provide an alternative to cardio if you’re looking to stay on top of your fitness levels. They are a tough workout, but Scarlet loves them.

Eva Longoria

The Desperate Housewives star has a novel way of staying in shape. It’s one that is very useful and has been growing in popularity in recent years, but might still seem a little out of the ordinary: Eva Longoria loves pole dancing. Pole dancing requires you to use a lot of strength in order to hold yourself up on the pole. This means that it can tone up your upper body as well as helping you to increase your co-ordination, balance and even your confidence. Pole dancing clearly works for Eva, who is looking as fantastic as ever.

It is easy to look at celebrities in magazines and on the internet and start to feel envious of their bodies. There is definitely an obsession within celebrity culture the it is important to look slim and attractive all of the time and when people are trying to hold onto their fame, which is of course, famously fleeting, they’ll do almost anything to keep themselves in shape. The problem is that we as the public only get to see the beautiful celebrity bodies without ever having to know the fallout in regards to how they got them. So it ends with us being envious of something that is not really rooted in reality.

The fact is that the rich and famous are very different to us. If they find themselves putting on weight, they simply pay the massive fees of professional personal trainers or if they don’t have the money too, their production company or agent – who will have that kind of money to throw around, and will have much more money invested in their client – will do exactly that. Celebrities get cravings for fatty foods just like we do, but for as long as they are still in the public eye they have enormous amounts of money at their disposal to deal with any weight issues.

It’s also worth noting that celebrities also have a constant pressure looming over them too. After all, their celebrity status can only last as long as they stay in amazing shape. So that gives them a pretty constant motivation to avoid slipping into bad eating habits or slacking off when it comes to the concept of going to the gym. The rest of us have to fit these things around busy and hectic working schedules.

“Celebrities have motivation, determination and, most importantly, pressure,” says Los Angeles-based personal trainer Michelle Lovitt who has worked with Courtney Cox and Julianne Moore “if you were in a movie that was opening in two weeks and two million people were going to critique how you look, you’d feel the same pressure to get to the gym”.

But just because you don’t have to go out and impress on the red carpet every other night, it doesn’t mean that you can’t drop those pounds and get a body like a celebrity. And the best way to do it is by using the same methods that those celebrities employ (of course without having to pay out for the expensive personal training sessions).

While you might imagine that to stay in shape, your favourite star probably has to spend several hours a day in the gym, but it is just simply not the case. The vast majority of celebrities don’t spend a long time in the gym – after all, they are not looking to bulk up their physique, they just want to stay in shape, and you can do this through short but high intensity sessions. This can include the favourite of Halle Berry, which is interval training, where you do a period of high intensity workout, followed by a short break, and then back into the workout, repeating the process a number of times.

Another great tip is that you shouldn’t worry too much about the scales. Whether you’ve gained or lost a few pounds is actually relatively irrelevant – we all know that muscles weights more than fat, so if you’re going to the gym regularly and gaining weight that might be due to additional muscle bulk. Instead, let your clothes be the judge – if they fit you properly or you’re beginning to need a belt, it can be a clear indicator that the work is paying off.

Have you ever seen an older celebrity and wondered what their anti-aging secret is? Famous women in their 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s seem to sashay down the red carpet, glowing with wellness and wellbeing and leaving us to wonder if it’s all thanks to plastic surgery, or whether there are some anti-aging and beauty tips that we can be in on. We’ve compiled a list of some of the youngest-looking older celebrities and found out their beauty secrets for you.

At 44, Cindy Crawford is glowing with youth and confidence. She says it is all down to grooming. At her age, she says, she can no longer get away with going out in any old clothes. She has to ensure that she is wearing a well-fitting outfit. She also gets her hair coloured regularly, saying that lustrous, rich hair looks very youthful (and also covers greys!) In addition to this, the celebrity keeps up to date with bikini waxes, manicures and pedicures.

Aged 46, Markiska Hargitay is strikingly youthful. She doesn’t like going to gym but says she does short exercise videos in her dressing room. She also credits a trampoline that she bought for her sun with helping her blast her heart rate up and burn calories.

Connie Britton is 42 and says that the sun has damaged her skin. Now that she is older and wiser she always uses a high factor sunscreen, which is also a moisturiser.

Stunning Susan Sarandon is 63 but looks much, much younger. She says that the secret to looking young is to not wear too much makeup, or you end up looking ridiculous. She goes for softer makeup and gentler tones now.

Model Iman is now 55, and actually credits gaining weight with her youthful looks. Being too skinny leads to you looking haggard in old age, she claims.

When it comes to anti-aging, and the products that contribute to this, the number one thing that makes you look young is to have glowing skin. When your skin is healthy, radiant and bright, it is as if your inner wellness and wellbeing are shining through, and this can often take years off your looks.

If you feel like you’ve lost your inner glow lately, the good news is that it can be faked using over-the-counter products. Simply by choosing the right skincare products, you can undo the effects of smoking, stress and all the other modern-day factors that contribute to dull and tired skin.

The most important thing is to start with a ‘fresh canvas’. This means that you should wash your face daily and get rid of any build-up of oils or bacteria. Then, make sure that you moisturise every day with an effective moisturiser that keeps your face smooth, protected and cared for.

Next, a luminising foundation can help to give your skin a subtle lift and glow, as if you have just come in from enjoying a bit of sunshine and a gentle breeze in the garden. There are lots of different products to choose from, many of which can be built up in layers to find the perfect glow for your skin.

If it’s summer time, another ideal way to get that glow is by using fake tan, or a bronzer in your makeup. Sitting in the sun may give you a golden look for a few hours or days, but overall the damaging effects of the sun on your skin can actually age you dramatically (not to mention the health risks) so it is worth finding a good bronzer instead to give you that happy, sun kissed look.

When you are struggling with your own weight and fitness issues, it can be depressing to look at the pages of beauty magazines and see celebrities looking effortlessly glamorous. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that they do not get their look of glowing wellness for free – they actually have to work very hard to achieve it. Celebrities may have staff and personal trainers to help them improve their wellbeing, but the fact remains that they are the ones who have to do the hard work in the gym every day, and so it is worth listening to what they have to say on the topic.

Many stars have to look good in order to earn money – it is as simple as that. Female celebrities especially make money based on the way that they look, and so it is vital to them to preserve their good looks. They also can’t risk their reputation by recommending any kind of fitness product that turns out to be a dud, so when they do endorse something it is worth looking into it a bit more closely.

For example, this applies to the RESET kit, endorsed by Mario Lopez an Ali Landry. This is a weight management system which offers specific low-glycaemic ingredients designed to even out their blood sugar and keep hunger pangs away, as well as controlling the craving for carbohydrates. Using RESET, they claim that you can say no to high-carb snacks and reset your metabolism, losing up to five pounds in five days.

The Fresh Diet is also celebrity endorsed, by well-known icons such as Sarah Michelle Gellar. Not having time to cook for herself from scratch every day, the celebrity uses the meal plan that was founded by gourmet chefs. You receive three freshly prepared meals to your house every day, as well as two snacks. These are freeze dried or vacuum packed and contain all the nutrients that you need for that day.

The results of a survey asking participants which celebrity body parts would create their ideal man and woman are in. The ideal man would have Brad Pitt’s jaw line, David Beckham’s body and Daniel Craig’s eyes, according to the results, as well as having Ryan Gosling’s smile and a touch of Jenson Button’s physique thrown in for good measure. For women, the ideal person would have a mix of Katherine Jenkins’ hair, the eyes of Nicole Scherzinger and the body of Beyoncé and Kelly Brook. The survey was carried out by Morrisons to try to seek out the nation’s attitude towards health and fitness, by determining which celebrity bodies they admired. Other celebrities who made the list were Samantha Cameron, for her nose, and Prince Harry for his body. One in five people questioned said that they’re not happy with their body shape, and 61 percent claimed that they would be able to boost their self-confidence by eating a healthier diet. Only 19 percent of the people spoken to said that they had given up on improving their body and most said that the diet food they were eating was generally the trigger. Nutritionist Bryonie Holleart stated that getting a perfect body requires a lot of hard work and willpower, both in regards to your diet and in the gym.
Often the smaller changes in our lifestyles amount to the biggest effects, such as changing what we snack on and how often, or the amount of physical activity we do. Over half the people questioned said that they felt diets didn’t work in the long run. However, healthier lifestyle choices, whether it’s upping the amount of fruit and veg you eat or cutting back on fatty or sugary foods, can make a huge difference and can help you reach a healthier weight.
