You’re probably feeling a little bloated and full of salt and sugar after the holidays—if this is the case, you’re not alone. Many of us eat too much, and we often eat foods that we know are bad for us during the holiday season. If you’re trying to shake that post-holiday energy slump, consider the following strategies for getting back on track with your health and habits.

Reduce

Cut back on your sugar and salt consumption. This is especially good if you’re feeling bloated. You can cut out all the refined carbs, salts, and sugars from your diet for at least three days and see how you feel then. This will help you get back on track with your healthy living.

Eat Your Veggies

Eat lots of vegetables. If you can, try to eat 7-12 servings of fruits and vegetables a day after the holidays are over. Be sure that you buy a large variety of fruits and vegetables for this one. You can even try to go vegetarian for a specified period of time, or give a try to going meatless one day a week. Fruits and veggies are so good for you!

Give Yourself Time

Don’t go too quickly at the gym. The temptation is there—you probably want to jump back into the gym with everything you have. But you need to take it easy at first and wait to warm up for a few days or so. Don’t jump right back in at the same speed you were going before the holidays. Give yourself plenty of time to warm up to the old pace, and be gentle with yourself as you start working out or exercising again.

Stay Hydrated

Drink lots of water. This is an easy one, but many post-holiday recovery programs forget this important aspect of detoxing. According to a Gilbert DUI attorney, the holiday season is usually accompanied by increased alcohol consumption, which severely dehydrates the body. The dreaded day-after hangover is symptomatic of a dangerously dehydrated body, so upping your water intake should be a top priority if your holidays involved heavy drinking. Water is a natural detox for so many, and it works to flush out toxins and helps your body eliminate waste. Try to drink at least 64 ounces of water daily, and be sure that you carry a little bottle with you if you need to. One rule of thumb about how much you need is to divide your body weight in half, and drink that many ounces per day. This will ensure that you get the proper detox going for yourself.

As you can see, there are many ways to detox—the above are just a few. Maintaining healthy habits, regular exercise, and staying hydrated are key to starting this year fresh and full of energy.

Unless you’re an artist or a fireman, your experience with charcoal is probably limited to the odd summertime barbeque, or perhaps Santa put it in your stocking as a kid. However, you’ve probably avoided charcoal in the past, or, at least, touching it. The second you touch charcoal, it gets all over your hands and clothes and you want nothing more than to wash it off. However, before you head to the tap after your next summer barbeque, hold off; you may be screwing your skin out of some serious wellness potential.

According to anti-ageing wellness expert Tynan Buck, beauty editor at XO Jane, ‘Because of its natural detoxifying properties, [charcoal] can be used to whiten teeth, remove poisons from your body, and cleanse! I’ve recently started trying out charcoal products and there are a few of them that I like so much that I’ve incorporated them into my normal skin care routine. My biggest issue with my skin is that, if left unattended, my pores clog up easily. I’m obsessively opposed to blackheads and will do anything to get rid of them, and to prevent their return (and they always return). I had heard that charcoal helps actively yank dirt out of your pores, and after using these three products, I buy it.’ So which products helped Buck to harness the power of charcoal?

1. Garnier Clean + Blackhead Eliminating Scrub: Buck details, ‘I start every shower with this exfoliating scrub. It’s an extra step getting ready in the morning, but it’s so good that I never skip it (or forget it.) It’s a gel-based exfoliating cleanser that’s surprisingly thick when you rub it in between your fingers, and really clings to your face as you scrub, which makes me feel like the charcoal is really sucking the grime out of my pores. The exfoliators deeply clean your face without being too abrasive to use every day. Personally, I use it about every other day, but do your thing.’

2. Garnier’s Clean + Shine Control Cleansing Gel: ‘After I’ve exfoliated all of the crap that’s built up on my face, I hit it with another dose of charcoal with Garnier’s Clean + Shine Control Cleansing Gel,’ notes Buck. ‘Much like its exfoliating counterpart, this is also a gel cleanser. This one is different because unlike the exfoliator, this gel cleaner is thinner than I expected. I only use about a nickel-sized drop and the cleanser does all the heavy lifting for me, dissolving dirt and any excess makeup from the day. It also keeps its promise of preventing oil build up and shine throughout the day.’

3. Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask: ‘Another way to take advantage of the detoxifying benefits of my new best friend, charcoal, is with the Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask,’ says Buck. ‘Origins combines the grime fighting properties of charcoal with white clay, which also works to absorb toxins from the skin. This mask works to draw out impurities from deep beneath the surface of your skin and dissolving dead skin cells, leaving your face looking clearer from the inside out. Simply apply a thin but solid layer to problem areas or your entire face, and let dry, which only takes about five minutes. You’ll know it’s ready to remove when you can touch your fingers to the mask without removing any reside. Then, softly scrub off with a warm cloth and admire your beautiful face. A tube is 3.4 ounces, which would last you a while. I used only a nickel-sized drop of the mask and it more than covered my face, and I have a big face.’

You may be considering a detox diet, but you shouldn’t put your wellbeing on the line without first asking some important questions. With that in mind, we’re here to answer every wellness question you have about detox cleanses:

1. What is a cleanse? While cleanses vary in intensity, they generally involve eliminating all the “bad stuff” from your body. Sometimes this is done by only drinking water for a few days, while other cleanses ask you to stick to juice, whole foods and/or fruits and vegetables. The name of the game is ridding your body of processed foods filled with refined sugar, white flour, and sodium.

2. Do you need to detox? Everyone has a different approach to detoxing; some people choose to do it once in a blue moon, while others detox several times per year. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to do a detox if you’re feeling run down or lethargic, you’ve slacked off on healthy eating and/or you’ve put on added pounds.

3. How do you get started? Once you’ve chosen a detox cleanse to suit you, head to your local greengrocers or supermarket and stock up on everything you need for the week. The general rule of thumb is to eat nothing but whole foods, and stick to water where possible. Fresh juices and herbal teas are also good options, but make sure these are the only things you have in your home. If you only have your detox options available to you, you’re less likely to give in to sugary temptation.

4. What size portions should you eat? Check the recipes of your detox cleanse to find out the recommended serving size, and then stick to it! We often have a warped idea of what constitutes a “serving” so it’s good to keep within official limits.

5. What foods should you avoid? When you’re shopping for detox cleanse ingredients, make sure you read the label on everything you purchase. It may seem like a lot of effort, but it’s vital that you avoid all refined sugar, white flour, fizzy drinks (including diet), and fried foods.

6. Will you be hungry? How hungry you feel during a detox cleanse depends on how much you normally eat. Since these programmes are all about clean eating and portion control – rather than starving yourself – you should feel free to add an extra snack from the options listed in your plan.

7. Will you lose weight? While weight loss will depend on how much you were eating before and how “unclean” your diet was, it’s very likely that you will lose some weight. Exercising during the week of eating clean will also rev up your weight loss results. The idea of a detox cleanse isn’t to just lose weight in a seven-day window and then stop; it’s to lose a dramatic amount of weight to kick-start a long-term weight loss plan. Seven days alone is not enough for sustainable weight loss.

8. How will you feel? It’s easy to see how switching from processed, unhealthy foods to eating clean can help you feel better all over. That said, some people do experience a not-so-great transition period as their bodies detoxify. Giving up caffeine, for example, can lead to temporary minor skin breakouts or headaches. To speed this process along, you should drink plenty of water to flush out the built-up toxins in your body.

9. Can you return to eating as you did before once the week is over? While you can return to your old diet, the likelihood is that the amount of energy you feel after eating clean will make you want to continue eating a healthier diet. It is OK to indulge in a “cheat meal” ever so often, but your goal should be to eat clean 99% of the time.

When you think about improving your diet and nutrition, your mind most often turns to the food that you put on your plate. You may contemplate the foods that can help you lose weight, or those that simply boost your wellness and wellbeing. What many people overlook, however, is the incredible power that is held by what you drink. If you drink sugary beverages all day, you are likely to gain (or maintain) weight. If what you drink is full of chemicals and additives, your wellness is bound to suffer.

Instead, why not make what you drink a vital part of your daily health routine, making sure that you only ingest pure, natural drinks in the form of smoothies and juices?

One such smoothie is sometimes referred to as the ‘aloe vera splash’ due to the fact that, when making green smoothies, lots of people like to add a dash of aloe vera gel. Aloe vera has numerous health benefits.

You can also make smoothies from any number of common fruits, which are packed with antioxidants. An apple and blueberry fruit smoothie, for example, is absolutely packed full of vitamins and can give your health a huge boost. In addition, the taste of sweet blueberries, creaminess of blueberry yoghurt and tart contrast of a green apple can be an absolute taste sensation.

One that you might not have thought of is the blueberry and red cabbage smoothie. It may sound disgusting but hear us out – this drink actually tastes great! By combining the blueberries with the red cabbage, a sweet and interesting flavour is produced, which not only fills up your tummy but helps to boost your immune system and brain power.

Finally, if winter colds and coughs are getting you down, try a ginger smoothie, made with fresh ginger, lemon, orange and carrot for a great way to boost your immune system and energise your body.

There are many different diets that fade in and out of popularity. This is no doubt due to the current obsession with weight loss and trying to emulate the appearance of celebrities and models. This makes people want to do anything they can in order to drop the pounds that they feel are making them unattractive. But there is an obvious problem here in that if people are so obsessed with losing weight that they will try almost anything, how do we know which diets are safe and indeed how do we know which ones are the right ones to use?

One of the most popular diets in the world right now is known as the Liver Detox Diet. It is something that you hear many celebrities championing the benefits of, and it is clearly a diet that has been able to make a difference in the lives of many people. Rather than being a diet that you do every day, the liver detox diet puts forward the idea that a few days a month you need to allow your body to cleanse itself – and you do this by detoxing. This detoxing process uses a limited amount of food as well as colon cleansing herbs in order for your body to be able to better rid itself of some of the harmful toxins that accumulate through our intake of food. But the big question is: do they really work?

There is a lot of negative publicity and controversy surrounding detox diets and the reason for that is simple – people try to use them the wrong way. As we have stated, people will do almost anything in order to lose weight and that includes using diets incorrectly. Detox diets, as mentioned before, are designed to be something that you do only a little bit – perhaps a few days in a month, but unfortunately some people have been using them as a crash diet in order to lose weight very quickly. The idea being that if a little use of the detox diet helps you lose weight over a long period of time, then an extended use of detox diets will result in very quick weight loss.

Unfortunately, trying to do the detox diet over a long period is actually damaging to your body and causes a lot more problems that you might imagine. Nevertheless, if you use the detox diet correctly it can actually be an effective way of making yourself healthier. The idea behind the diet is that if you stop eating foods that are bad for you, it gives your body the opportunity to go through its natural processes and flush out lots of the bad stuff that has accumulated in your body. Once the body has gone through this process it is naturally healthier and is able to do all of its jobs better.

This can actually help you in terms of weight loss because there are many bodily processes that, if weighed down by months of eating bad food, do not perform as well as they could. This includes processes that are vital to us losing weight such as our ability to digest food and our metabolism. So if you do want to do a detox diet, there should be no real problem with that as long as you do it sensibly and in moderation. Do not believe that this is a quick fix solution – you’ll be using it to be healthier, fitter and slimmer in the long term and doing it with a method that makes your body better.

Improving your wellness and wellbeing is often a matter of paying closer attention to your diet and nutrition. People often do this by doing some kind of detox diet to get them started. There are various different detox diets that you can do, and they all make different claims.

Generally, though, detox diets claim to help your body rid itself of toxins and enable you to lose weight faster. They are also thought to help you feel better and have more energy. Any detox diet is usually made up of a variety of different activities, such as fasting for a period of a few days, eating only juice for a few days, taking supplements and multi vitamins and cutting out unhealthy food and drink such as sugar, caffeine, alcohol and junk food.

Detoxes also go a step further for some people, and involve things like chelation therapy, saunas and colon cleansing. The Master Cleanse used by Beyonce, for example, advises people to drink cups of water with lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. Kate Moss, celebrity model, also follows another detox diet which advocates 21 days of eating soy, poultry, fish, steamed vegetables, brown rice, lentils, beans and drinking nothing but green tea.

In order to detox, you have to think about whether you are intoxicated in the first place. In truth, you probably are. There are so many different pollutants in the air and all around us. Drugs and alcohol can add to this.

Detox diets can have a significant effect on the body and can be a good start to get you into a healthier routine, but it’s worth mentioning that they are not a quick fix. You cannot lose significant weight unless you stick to a diet, and if you do a few days of a detox and nothing further then all that will happen is that you quickly regain the weight and feel the same as you did before.

Whether you’ve read about them in the glossy pages of celebrity magazine, or your friend at work is trying one out in preparation for the big Christmas Do, everyone has heard of detoxing. This weight loss technique is a huge favourite with dieters trying to get in shape in a hurry, but is it actually going to benefit your wellbeing long-term? Luckily, wellness expert Nicola Conville, creator of myhealthyfamily.com, recently trialled the Dietlicious 10-day Cleanse, and now we’re passing her findings on to you.

Conville enthuses, ‘I do love a good detox plan. I have been doing detoxes once or twice a year for the past 10 years and have been amazed how much they have evolved in that time. Forget subsisting on carrot sticks and repackaged laxatives, the modern cleanse features clean, delicious, wholesome food. With some careful planning, it’s possible to go DIY, but if you want a plan that’s easy to follow and stick to, there are some fabulous companies that will deliver healthy meals to your door so you don’t have to do a thing.’ So, how did Conville get on with the Dietlicious 10-day Cleanse?

Day One: Conville recalls, ‘I wake up with a sore throat and thumping headache – not a good start. I consider postponing the cleanse but then remind myself that all that fresh food will probably help me recover faster. I drink a delicious watermelon, mint and acai smoothie for brekkie and feel much better. While the food is yummy, I do find myself feeling hungry through the day so I snack on cashews and bananas to fill myself up.’

Day Two: ‘The temptation to order a coffee is strong,’ Conville admits. ‘So I cheat a little and get a decaf. My mouth waters at the sight of some delicious cakes at my local bakery but I know it’s just a case of wanting what I can’t have! For lunch I have spinach chana dhal with basmati rice and dinner is barramundi with fresh veggies.’

Day Three: Conville relates, ‘This is the hardest day so far as withdrawals really kick in. I miss coffee, I miss wine, I miss chocolate. The mango and chia seed smoothie I have for brekkie gives me the sweet hit I need. My daily cup of ginger tea is proving very addictive too.’

Day Six: ‘I am really in full swing now – and more than halfway through the plan,’ Conville notes. ‘The food is yummy and so easy to prepare and I don’t feel as hungry as I did at the start of the plan. It seems my body is readjusting to eating lighter, fresher meals.’

Day Eight: ‘Only a few days left to go and I am feeling light and fresh,’ Conville asserts. ‘I am moving quicker and my skinny jeans are feeling a little looser. I no longer have a 3pm craving for chocolate; instead I snack on mixed nuts or fruit and have a peppermint tea. I love the feeling of having good energy levels all day long and I am sleeping like a baby.’

Day Ten: On the last day, Conville details, ‘I have a frittata for brekkie and enjoy my last meal of salmon with chermoula and sweet potato mash. I have no real desire to drink wine or wolf down a pizza, but I am looking forward to cooking and preparing my own meals again and eating with my family.’

So how is life after the Dietlicious 10-day Cleanse? ‘While a detox is not for the faint-hearted, it’s a great way to get your health back on track and develop some good habits,’ Conville comments. ‘I have found that if I bring nuts and fruit to work with me I don’t even think about hitting the vending machine at 3pm. It really is all about the planning. I’ve also cut my daily coffee to two to three times weekly, and am drinking more tea instead. If you do go on a detox, plan it well, let everyone around you know what you’re doing so they’ll be supportive (no nicking your food!) and phase in and out of the cleanse gently rather than indulging before and afterwards, however tempting it might be!’

America isn’t really known for it’s ancient wellness practises, but one remedy has really stood the test of time: apple cider vinegar (ACV). From an aid to weight loss to providing heart burn relief, ACV has a range of uses that can truly benefit your wellbeing.

Before we go any further, the ACV we’re talking about here isn’t the translucent orange stuff you see on supermarket shelves; it’s organic, raw, unfiltered ACV. You’re looking for a variety that hasn’t been pasteurised and has a cloudy mass settling on the top and the bottom of the bottle (which is known as “the mother”). It’s really up to you as to how you take it, but a good, basic regimen to follow is to add two tablespoons of ACV to an eight-ounce glass of water, and have one of these mixtures three times a day. Some people add honey to taste, as the vinegar obviously makes it quite bitter, while others prefer to put the ACV into a shot glass, and chug it down with a tall 16oz glass of water right behind it.

A lot of the evidence as to the efficacy of ACV is anecdotal, so it would be remiss of us not to include some top tips from ACV users. Amy from Hartford, Connecticut, details, ‘I was on prescribed allergy medicine for 17 years. I started the honey and ACV mixed with water three years ago and rarely even have to take an over the counter allergy pill. It takes about four to six days of taking it twice a day to build up in my system, and then I usually only have to take it once a day. I’m a massage therapist and I recommend it to all of my clients who come in with allergies, many of them have become faithful to the ACV too. So glad someone told me about it!’ Shawn from Boulder notes, ‘Mixed with ginger ale and white grape juice, ACV tastes terrific. Very similar in taste to Kombouchu tea.’

According to John from Caledon, Ontario, ‘Apple cider vinegar is easiest to palate when mixed with apple juice. It tastes like apple cider, plus you get the numerous antioxidant and natural benefits from the apple juice.’ However, Lara from Milwaukee, Wisconsin writes, ‘I took Apple Cider Vinegar with a shot glass of Welches Grape Juice. It tastes a lot like wine to me this way. Much easier to take this way. I have a lot more energy already and I have only been taking it a few days.’ Lisa from West Plains, Missouri comments, ‘I like the benefits I’m having since I’ve started taking ACV. But I did not like the taste and surely I’m not alone. I tried it with mango tea and one spoonful of the vinegar and an equal amount of honey. It tastes wonderful. I drink it at least four times a day. It’s that good. Lipton tea has mango and I’m sure other brands will work.’

So that’s the what and the how, but why should you take ACV? The benefits include:

  • Getting rid of acid reflux

  • Reducing allergy symptoms

  • Lowering your blood pressure

  • Rebalancing your body’s pH factor, which helps prevent colds

  • Preventing migraines

  • Stopping night-time leg spasms

  • Lessening gout and arthritis symptoms

  • Avoiding food poisoning

  • Preventing yeast and fungal infections (Strong ACV can actually cause a yeast infection, so be careful and start slow)

  • Natural detox

  • Energy

  • B Vitamins

  • Healthy shiny hair, and a glowing complexion

When you think about the topics that affect family wellness, you probably consider the health of a couple, and perhaps a child (or five), too. What you may not consider, is the wellness and wellbeing of the family’s faithful four-legged friend: the family dog.

When other members of the family are feeling lethargic or suffering from stomach or digestive problems, you may consider some kind of detox diet. When it comes to the dog, perhaps you should consider the same strategy?

Pets are surrounded by the same exposure to daily toxins and chemicals that can impair the ability of all living things to naturally get rid of all of the waste materials that they carry around, leading their bodies to feel heavy and sluggish. This can lead to illness, and a few days of a detox diet can help to improve the function of the liver, clear the skin, restore healthy digestion and improve overall energy levels.

Holistic pet care is a school of thought that believes that pet care should encompass the whole pet and every aspect of their mental and physical wellbeing. Many people believe that a lot of the health problems in pets come from problems with their kidneys and liver, brought about by chemicals in pet food, in the air around them (such as in cigarette smoke) in chlorinated water, in pesticides and in pollution. This can lead them to suffer from parasites, digestive problems, weight gain or loss, lethargy, skin problems and respiratory problems.

Prevention is best, so if possible, try to avoid chemical cleaners and insecticides, avoid smoking around your pet and use natural flea treatments and pet foods with your pet. If a detox is necessary though, there are a number of options, such as adding probiotics to their food to improve their digestion, giving them milk thistle to help with damaged liver and using dandelion as a detoxifier.

Anti-ageing products don’t tend to have an age limit printed on the side, so how do you know when’s the best time to start using them. Your face may be smooth and virtually line free, but you could still be tempted to try out some products to delay the signs of ageing. Here is a rundown of ingredients you may find useful if you’re in your 20s and 30s. Pre-ageing No one wants to wish away the blemish-free years of their youth, when your skin gleams with wellness and late nights don’t seem to have much effect. In your late 20s and early 30s you might start to notice a few facial lines when you’re dehydrated or bags around the eye area occasionally. But, does this mean you should start applying products to combat the signs of ageing? Experts say creams containing retinol make an effective remedy at this age. Rather than concentrating on plumping up collagen – which is still mostly firm – it stimulates the renewal of cells, keeping your face looking fresh and reducing pores. Detox Whatever our age, we are all at risk of cell damage from free radicals, which contribute to ageing and wellbeing problems. These molecules attack our defences and stop cells working as well as they could. Although our own bodies generate them, they are also found in environmental pollutants, making it important to shield our skin from them. Creams containing anti-oxidants can provide a barrier and prevent free radicals from damaging skin cells. Beyond your face The benefits of sunscreen are many, so remember to apply it daily.
