Any expert in diet and nutrition will tell you that protein is essential for your wellness and wellbeing. The problem with protein, is that it tends to have a considerable price tag associated with it.

Protein is important because it helps to aid muscle repair and recovery after a bout of exercise. A high protein diet tends to be more expensive than a high carb diet, however, but there are ways around this. If you are a savvy shopper, you can make some sensible choices to help bring down the cost of the protein on your weekly menu.

Liver, for example, is a very out of fashion type of food, but it is cheap and is packed with protein. Ox liver is one of the cheapest sources of protein that you could possibly buy and, like other offal, it is one of the most nutrient-dense foods available. Due to the fact that the liver is used for detoxification, it can also harbour certain toxins, so you need to steer clear of livers from older or bigger animals, especially non-organic ones. Chicken or lambs liver is your best bet, and be sure to buy organic if you can. Liver is packed with vitamins, including A, iron, B12 and the full range of B vitamins, as well as that all-important protein.

Mussels are also protein rich. They are a little more expensive, but still great value, and contain lots of minerals such as selenium, iron, zinc and vitamins C and B12. They’re also very delicious, especially when cooked with garlic, wine and chilli.

Quark is another excellent source of protein, and very cheap at 34p per 100g. This is a rich, creamy cheese that is very high in protein as well as being a great source of B vitamins and calcium. You can use it to thicken sauces (even that garlic and wine sauce for the mussels to double-dose on your protein if you want!)

People who are overweight have often tried every diet in the book. Some diets work well at first and then the effect seems to wear off. Some diets are impossible to stick to. Some diets are easy to stick to but ineffective. Others are truly dangerous, and damaging to your wellness and wellbeing. It can be really hard to sort through the dieting minefield, and low carb diets are just one of the many unknown factors in the dieting world.

Low carb diets are generally very popular due to the fact that people who go on low carb diets frequently see really good results. Low carb diets tend to result in quick weight loss and people can lose quite a lot of weight on them too. They are also great for people with diabetes. Diabetics find that a low carb diet can help them to lower their blood sugar levels. The weight loss that occurs on low carb diets is also beneficial for diabetics. Low carb diets steer you away from bad carbs, such as bleached flours and refined sugar – as these are the kinds of carbohydrates that can be addictive, it is really good to find a way of reducing the amount of ‘bad carbs’ that you have in your diet.

Whilst steering clear of these ‘bad’ carbohydrates is undeniably a great idea, steering clear of all carbohydrates may not be. There are plenty of good carbohydrates in things like fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains, and these foods are actually good for you and don’t need to be eliminated from the diet. People who are on low carb diets also often have a lack of dietary fibre, and this can lead to problems with constipation. In addition to this, low carb diets tend to need to be stuck to for life, because when carbs are reintroduced, the weight can pile back on quickly.

Testosterone is vital for a man’s sexual wellness and wellbeing, but it’s actually far more important than most men realise. A shortage of testosterone could actually cost you your life. Testosterone being low leads to all kinds of unpleasant side effects such as loss of muscle mass, low bone density, low sex drive and even increased risk of heart disease, cancer and death.

This is something that every man should take seriously, and there are some important things you can do to raise your testosterone levels.

One important thing to be aware of is that weight is linked to low testosterone, and the more your waist size goes up, the more your testosterone levels will come down. Just a four point increase in testosterone levels (around 30 extra pounds of body fat on an average 5’10 guy) can actually accelerate the decline of your physical health due to testosterone by up to 10 years. In order to stop this from happening, try a low fat diet and a serious ab-sculpting workout programme.

Another study has also shown recently that men who regularly lift weights, see a phenomenal boost in their testosterone levels. As the muscles get stronger, the body produces more and more testosterone. You need to pump iron twice a week in order to see this kind of benefit.

You should also be wary of cutting out too much fat from your diet. It’s good to cut down on the fat to a large extend, but eliminating all sources of fat can cause the testosterone in your body to plummet. Men who consume fat have high testosterone levels, but you need to make sure that it’s healthy fat such as the fat found in fish and nuts, in order to avoid counteracting all your good work by piling on the pounds.
