Environmental wellness journalists, bloggers and enthusiasts all recently came together for a month of going plastic-free, to see what they might learn about taking care of the planet’s wellbeing. One such participant, Emily Main of Rodale.com, who started the inititative, commented, ‘While trying to live plastic free was a struggle, it has produced what we hope are some lasting behavioural changes. Our month was eye-opening, and we discovered, each in our own way, how much plastic had crept into our lives and just how easy it is to accept the disposable approach to living that plastic has helped create.’ So, what lessons can you take away from plastic-free month?

1. Carry your own cutlery: ‘Ever since moving out of New York City a few years ago, the amount of takeout food that I eat—and the associated plastic forks, spoons, and knives—has fallen precipitously,’ Emily notes. ‘That’s a healthier way to eat, but when I do need to grab some takeout, plastic cutlery is usually the only option (unless I want to eat with my hands). To prevent this scenario during the plastic-free challenge, I dug out my big purse and tossed in a set of reusable cutlery, and I’ve been carrying it around with me ever since.’

2. Ditch the shampoo bottle and make your own hair rinse: If plastic is anywhere in your home, it’s in your bathroom. Online editor Leah Zerbe decided to swap her shampoo in a plastic bottle for a bar of Dr. Bronner’s castile soap. She adds, ‘I challenged a creative hair stylist to come up with three styles without using any plastic-encased products.’ Together, Leah and her stylist created a cheap and environmental recipe for sea salt spray: four pinches sea salt mixed into one and a half cups of water. Not only can this give you a great beachy waves, but Leah comments, ‘You can also use this sea salt solution to suck oil out of oily roots on days in between washings.’

3. Go a bit more natural in your garden: Even though gardening has been done for centuries in the great outdoors, it does seem to require a lot of plastic. However, Leah was surprised at how easy it was to get rid of plastic pots and labels, vinyl-coated tomato cages and compost bins, and even plastic mulch. According to Leah, ‘I used a metal soil block maker to start thousands of seeds for my farm without using any plastic pots whatsoever.’ Soil block makers are – as the name suggests – blocks of compressed soil in which you can start seeds and then plant directly into the ground. Another option is to start your seeds in newspaper pots, and you can replace your plastic plant ties with dried lily leaves or natural twine.

4. Eliminate Ziploc or plastic food bags: Dana Blinder, our digital assistant and social media coordinator, asserts, ‘I dare you to find something that is as easily available, fresh-keeping, inexpensive, and simple as my beloved Ziploc bags.’ However, in spite of her love for plastic food bags, Dana has now invested in glass food-storage containers. ‘I’ve started cooking multiple helpings at once, and storing them all in glass containers, instead of tossing half a bell pepper into a baggie,’ she says.

5: Take bags to the supermarket: This is a tip everyone knows but still it’s hard to remember to take bags with you for your weekly shop. This was the case with Senior Editor Rick Chillot, who describes, ‘I was vexed all month because I’m not very good at remembering to bring bags to the grocery store. I also came to realise how many stray plastic bags I pick up during a typical week, just from buying random stuff.’ However, Rick is now trying to remember his plastic bags and tell ‘cashiers I don’t need a bag if I can possibly carry things without one.’

Aromatherapy bath salts rely on the therapeutic effect of essential oils combined with salt and water to enhance a person’s bathing experience. The salt added to the water helps in the healing of dry skin by easing up the opening of the pores where the sweat, dirt and toxins are supposed to pass through to get outside the body.

Bath salts can also be used to reduce itching and skin irritation that occurs as a result of insect bites and minor rashes. Those suffering from skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema can benefit from it too. Aromatherapy bath salts‘ pleasant scents are derived from the essential oils used in their preparation. One can choose to use only one aromatherapy oil or combine more than one in a blend. This helps to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and recover from fatigue and other conditions. Here is an article to help you make your own aromatherapy bath salt at home.

Things you will need

Of course there are certain kitchen tools you will need to prepare the bath salt. Here they are:

  • A bowl

  • The salt to be used

  • Cups (preferably of 920 ml)

  • Essential oils and a career oil

  • A jar with a lid that can be closed tightly

  • 1 tablespoon

Steps to follow

There are many different salts you can use for the recipe, it can be Sea Salt, Epsom salt, Icelandic brin salt or black see pink salt. You can pick the one you prefer based on the results you expect. Once you make your choice of salt, you can place it in the bowl. You can blend two different types of salt in the bowl if you want.

You should now add carrier oil (example coconut oil) to the salt that you poured in the bowl. A tablespoon should be enough. You then need to mix the whole thing for a while.

The next step would be to add the essential oil. It could be just a single oil or a blend of 2 or 3. In the case of essential oils do not exceed 24 drops. Even 15 drops is enough. You should then mix it thoroughly again.

Basically you are done. After mixing with the essential oil, the bath salt is almost ready. You just have to pour the mixture into a jar with a lid that can tightly close it. The following day you should mix the whole mixture again.

How to use

The aromatherapy bath salt is used by adding half or one cup of the salt mixture to running bath water. Fill the bath tub and allow the salt to dissolve in it. Helping the salt spread around the water with your hand is a good idea. Keep in mind that the coarser the grains of the salt the more time it needs to dissolve completely.

About storage

To store your bath salt you can buy fancy glass bottle or cellophane and ziploc bags. Because of the presence of essential oils in the mixture, you should avoid plastic bottles. They can be melted by the oils. Jelly jars are very much recommended for storage purposes.

But remember to always label the different mixtures you come up with and keep your bottle away from children’s reach.

Being a nutritional powerhouse packed with more nutrients than your typical green leafy vegetables, KALE has definitely grown much in popularity with health enthusiasts these days. Kale comes from the cabbage family and is also called black kale, cavolo nero or Tuscan black cabbage. This frilly vegetable even surpasses vitamin and mineral content of the once popular spinach. Rich in nutrients very much needed for healthy bones, skin and eyes, it promotes good digestion and immune function. It is packed with Omega-3, Iron, Calcium, Phosphorus and Potassium. It even has 3x more Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Beta Carotene and 10x more Vitamin C than spinach. Although we can almost consider kale as the perfect vegetable, it however contains naturally occurring substances called Oxylates that can interfere with the absorption of calcium. Hence, do not plan your calcium-rich food intake together with kale in your meals.

When picking out Kale, avoid ones that are yellowing, dry and wilted. Choose the ones that are a healthy dark green to purple to a deep red in color and have a lot of spring to them.

Upon storage keep them unwashed until it is time to use them, as moisture speeds up wilting and decay. Put them in the coldest part of the refrigerator, usually at the back, and keep away from other stored foods that have a strong smell, especially meats. Use within 3 days of purchase.

Because Kale is slightly bitter in flavor, pairing it with other fruits and juices plus a thorough washing will considerably tone down its tart taste. Below are 5 awesomely delicious ways to enjoy Kale in a nutritious snack, appetizer or drink!

Homemade products are always cost effective and healthier. I remember when I was a child, I loved to sit beside my granny and watch her making soaps and toothpastes at home. The entire process was very complex and it took her hours to make one bar of soap and a small quantity of toothpaste for a single month.

No one has the patience and time for such things these days. However, we can also not ignore the benefits of natural products. Here are some easy and quick ways of treating your gum disease naturally.

Increase The Intake Of Vitamin D

The anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin D strengthen the teeth and soothe swollen gums. The sun is the richest source of vitamin D. Make a routine of standing below the sunlight for at least 10 minutes twice a week no matter if it’s cold or cloudy. According to the results of research conducted by the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, 20 minutes sun exposure on a weekly basis will give skin and gums enough vitamin D to sustain them.

Use The Right Blend Of Oils

The benefits of herbal oils are known to everyone. However, do you know which blends work? Some oils compliment others and heal more quickly if applied in the form of a blend. Tea tree oil, oregano, manuka, thyme, cinnamon, rosemary, clove, fennel, orange and eucalyptus are some of the most common and easily available herbal oils. Just blend two oils with the same anti-bacterial properties and it will make the treatment more effective. Some of the beneficial blends include wintergreen/peppermint, peppermint/orange/eucalyptus and manuka/tea tree/eucalyptus.

Make Your Own Toothpaste And Mouthwash

Here is a two-minute process for you to make your own toothpaste. Mix baking soda and salt in a 4:1 ratio. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil blend. Brush with this mixture regularly and see the difference.

You can also make your own mouthwash using the same blend of oils. Make a solution of warm water and sea salt in the same proportion. Add five to six drops of essential oils and gargle with this solution at least once a day. The antibacterial properties of sea salt protect the gum from infections and works as an antibiotic for them. Sea salt contains minerals that are also found in the human body. No other synthetic substance is as beneficial as this natural source of mineral.

Reduce Stress

According to the results of a study conducted at the University of Dusseldorf, excessive stress can lead to plaque and bleeding of gums. As part of this research, a group of students were asked to undergo a professional dental cleaning four weeks before and after an exam. These students were then divided into two groups, one group took the exam and the other did not. After the last assessment, both of the groups had dental checkups. It was found that the former had considerably more cavities, bleeding gums and gingivitis than the latter.

If your gums start to bleed every time you are under stress, then you do not need to visit a dentist. Medicines will only minimize the pain for awhile. You may require a proper stress relieving treatment such as mindfulness meditation, relaxation response or diaphragmatic breathing.

Reduce The Consumption Of Sugary Foods

Like mosquitoes and ants, bacteria are also attracted by the smell and taste of sugar. As soon as your teeth come in contact with any sweet stuff, it triggers the bacterial attacks and causes the formation of plaque. It is not possible to stay away from chocolate and cakes all the time, especially for kids. As soon as you are finished eating sweets, brush your teeth immediately to clean the traces of sugar left on them.

After knowing how to treat gum diseases naturally and the benefits associated with it, won’t you want to try these out? Switch to natural treatments and save yourself from the dentists’ tools.
