Once upon a time, a job was for life and people tended to work in the same industry or even for the same company throughout their entire career. But these days, it’s more common for people to change direction mid-way through their career. And with proper planning, there’s no reason why you can’t change career at any age.

Is a career change right for you?
The first step is to think about why you want to change. It may be that you don’t need to change career completely to find new challenges or better prospects. A new role in your existing company or a position at a new firm might be what you need instead.

What next?

If you have decided that you want a complete change of career, you need to think about what you’d like to do next. Think about the things you still enjoy in your current career – are there skills you could transfer to a different industry or role? Alternatively, do you have hobbies outside of work that you could build into a new career? Take time to research your options and find out what training or qualifications you might need to kick-start your new career.

Practical considerations

Think about the financial and practical implications of a career change. For example, changing career may mean taking a drastic pay cut whilst you establish yourself in your new job. Make sure you have adequate savings whilst you make the transition.

We’ve all been there – the afternoon hits and our energy slumps almost instantly. If you find that you’re regularly running out of energy come the end of the day, you might not be taking as good care of yourself in the office as you think you are. What we eat and how we conduct ourselves makes a massive difference to the energy levels we have throughout the day, whether it’s taking regular breaks as you work or making the most of your lunch break, here are some great tips on how to stay healthy.

Take regular breaks

It’s easy to find yourself in amongst a project and suddenly you’ve been working solidly for hours on end. Regular breaks give your mind chance to refresh itself and unwind, limiting the risk of you burning out and becoming tired too quickly. Try and take ten minutes of fresh air when you can or move to another department or the canteen for a change of scenery and a chance to stretch your legs.

Move around the office

A change of view can change your whole perspective on work and sometimes that’s all you really need. If you find yourself stuck with a problem that you can’t seem to get through, pick yourself up and move somewhere else for a short while – perhaps go and chat it through with a colleague. The change of pace and scenery might give you the mental boost you need.

Do something nice for a colleague

Workplace kindness is invariably forgotten in most companies, but random acts of kindness can really boost your morale. Why not take a trip to the bakery at lunchtime and treat your department to a nice treat? Or you could offer to make your colleague a cup of tea or pay them a compliment – anything you’d enjoy to receive, offer it to your team and watch the mood instantly lift.

Get involved

The feel-good factor is vital for helping to keep company spirit high. Why not join in on fundraising activities or make a company-wide bake sale for charity? It might sound like a lot of effort but it helps to improve teamwork and you’re helping others at the same time.

Have fun at work

Work doesn’t need to be boring, so make time for play – it not only improves your mood but can also help to stimulate your brain, which is often what we all need by the time the afternoon rolls around. Why not take part in a friendly game of table football at lunch or ping pong with a colleague? It will be fun as well as helping to get the brain juices flowing.

Treat yourself to a massage

Believe it or not, but lunchtimes don’t need to be reduced to a soggy lunch and a read of the paper. You can treat yourself! Why not visit the local masseuse for a stress-relieving massage which will lift your spirits and lower your stress levels. It can even boost mental health. Making time for yourself can really do wonders for your mood.

Get active

If a massage on lunch isn’t really your thing, you can still use this time to get some fresh air and go for a walk. Boosting your energy levels is just one of the benefits – you’ll also have chance to stretch your legs, lower your stress levels and enjoy a change of scenery, to set you up for the remainder of the day.

Sometimes stress seems out of your control; there’s always bills to pay, family to look after, work to go to and never enough hours to do it all – but you have more power over stress than your think. In fact, the first step to mental health and wellness is realising that you are in control of your own life. Managing stress is all about taking charge of your wellbeing, so how do you do it?

1. Identify stress sources: The true sources of your stress aren’t always obvious, especially because you can easily overlook your own stress-inducing thought patterns, feelings and behaviours. For example, work deadlines are a common stressor, but maybe the real stress lies in your procrastination at work.

2. Look at your current coping mechanisms: How do you currently manage and cope with stress in your life? Starting a stress journal – in which you note the cause of your stress, your physical and emotional response, how you acted in response and what you did to make yourself feel better – can help you identify your coping mechanisms. Unhealthy coping strategies include smoking, drinking, over- or under-eating, withdrawing from others, zoning out for hours in front of the TV or computer, drugs, oversleeping, procrastinating, taking things out on others and filling up every minute of the day to avoid facing problems.

3. Avoid unnecessary stress: While it’s not always healthy or even possible to avoid stressful situations, you can eliminate a number of stressors in your life.

  • When you’re reaching your limit of what you can handle, learn how to say know when someone tries to pile on more to do.

  • If you have a person in your life who consistently causes you stress you can’t turn the relationship around, limit the amount of time you spend with that person or end the relationship entirely.

  • If environmental factors cause you stress, change your environment. This means turning off the evening news if it makes you anxious, travelling a different way home if traffic makes you tense, or doing your food shopping online if going to the supermarket is such a chore.

  • If hot-button topics – like religion or politics – make you upset, stop bringing them up in conversation. If someone else starts talking about things you don’t want to talk about, change the subject or excuse yourself.

4. Alter the situation: If you can’t avoid it; change it! Adapting the way you communicate and interact with others can change things so the problem doesn’t present itself in the future. If a situation or person bothers you, don’t bottle up those feelings but share them in an open and respectful way. Resentment only compounds the problem, but make sure you’re willing to compromise and change your behaviour too. If you both bend a little bit, you can find a happy middle ground. While you can’t alter stressful situations while they’re happening, managing your time better the next time around can help prevent the amount of stress you find yourself under.

5. Adapt to the stressor: If you can’t change or avoid the stressor, you can always change your own expectations and attitude. Try to look at these stressful situations from a more positive perspective. Instead of getting irate over a traffic jam, seize it as an opportunity to think or listen to some music and sing in the car. Ask yourself if these problems will be all that important tomorrow, in a year or in 10 years from now. Looking at the big picture will help you to focus your time and energy on things that matter.

Ok, they’ve probably taught you about this in school, but in case you weren’t listening or were too worried about what your friends were saying to pay close attention, let’s talk about puberty. During your teenage years, your body begins to develop and change more than it will at any other time in your life – except when you were a baby – and this is known as puberty. The important thing to note here is that everyone goes through these changes, and it’s perfectly normal. Still, it’s a good idea to know what to expect, so you don’t get freaked out when these changes occur.

At a certain age during your adolescent years (between seven and 13 in girls and nine and 15 in guys), your brain releases a gonadotropin-releasing hormone, or GnRH, which starts the puberty process. The GnRH travels to a gland under your brain known as the pituitary gland, and this releases two more puberty hormones into your bloodstream; luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Although both guys and girls will have both of these hormones in their bodies, your sex will determine how these hormones go to work on different parts of the body. For guys, these hormones signal the production of testosterone and sperm, while FSH and LH stimulate girls’ ovaries to begin producing another hormone called oestrogen. Both of these processes prepare your body for reproduction.

Another change that happens during puberty is a growth spurt. For about two or three years, your body rapidly grows – even up to four or more inches in the space of a year. This will be the last time you grow in your life so once your growth spurt ends, this is your new adult height. Your body will also change in shape as well as size. Guys, your shoulders will widen and your body will become more muscular. You’ll also notice that your voice becomes deeper, your testes get bigger and your penis lengthens and widens. Some guys do experience a bit of breast development, but this often goes away by the end of puberty.

Girls, you’ll probably become curvier, gaining more weight on your hips and bigger breasts. This begins with a little swelling under your nipple, and you may find that one breast grows more quickly than the other. However, time will soon even things out. It’s perfectly normal to experience occasional soreness under the nipples as your breasts start to enlarge. It’s also completely healthy and common to notice an increase in body fat, so don’t try to go on a diet to go back to your pre-puberty weight – that was a kid’s weight, of course you’re not going to weigh the same! If you ever have questions or concerns about your weight, talk it over with your doctor. About two to three years after your breasts start growing, you’ll have your first period.

One change that both guys and girls go through is finding hair in new places. In the beginning, you’ll notice light and sparse hair growing under your arms and in your pubic area (on and around your genitals). As you go through puberty, this hair becomes longer, thicker, heavier, and darker. Eventually, guys also start to grow hair on their faces. Speaking of faces, you may also develop acne, due to the hormonal changes in your body. This normally disappears during adulthood, but until then you may have acne on your face, your upper back, or your upper chest. It helps to keep your skin clean, and your doctor will be able to offer some suggestions for clearing up acne.

Five major aspects of environmental wellness are threatening our health, and will continue to do more and more damage. This is according to a team of 28 climate scientists from US government agencies, universities, and independent research institutions, who have released a report on how climate change has already affected our health, economic wellness and social wellbeing.

The report compiles the most advanced research we have on global warming, confirming previous findings that rising temperatures are a result of human activity. Published by the government’s US Global Change Research Programme, the report highlights several global warming-related problems that have already begun to take shape in the US; prolonged droughts, more intense heat waves, and more severe weather events like floods. The question is, then, how will these environmental changes affect us?

Extreme heat waves: Not only will this change have a more disastrous impact on your health, it will also affect transport and energy systems, as well as our production of crops and livestock.

More instances of heavy downpours: This is a particular problem in western and south-western America, as more heavy downpours will cause the snow to melt more quickly, which will have an impact on the level and availability of drinking water in these areas. Moreover, increased heavy downpours will lead to increased flooding.

Rising water temperatures: In combination with the acidification of the oceans, the rising temperature of the water threatens coral reefs. As these reefs support rich ecosystems, this can cause environmental and economic damage because these areas are vital for the tourism and seafood industries.

Generally warming climate: The overall warming of the atmosphere is already having a negative effect in terms of insect infestations, as these are already on the rise and are projected to increase further in the future. The same can be said for wildfires, which can threaten homes, infrastructure and lives.

Rising sea levels: On top of storm surges, local sea-level rise of more than three feet, will increasingly threaten homes and other coastal infrastructure. There will also be more frequent and severe coastal flooding and, eventually, land along the coast will disappear into the rising seas.

For the report, the researchers calculated how taking immediate action to curb greenhouse gas emissions might affect our environmental outcomes, compared to what would happen if we did nothing. This was done using computer modelling, and the scientist found the situation may not be so bleak if we act and change our ways. The authors wrote, ‘Implementing sizable and sustained reductions in carbon dioxide emissions as soon as possible would significantly reduce the pace and the overall amount of climate change, and would be more effective than reductions of the same size initiated later.’

Donald Wuebbles, PhD, one the report’s authors, commented in a press conference, ‘I remain optimistic that we can do something about this. We do need to act sooner rather than later because we want to avoid the worst changes, looking at these projections. We can do something about it, but we do need to act soon.’ Jane Lubchenco, PhD, undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, added, ‘This report provides concrete scientific information that climate change is happening now and in our own backyards,’ and so we need to keep our eye on the ball, instead of putting environmental wellness on the back-burner while we deal with other issues.

Here’s a few changes you can make to mitigate climate change’s long-term effects:

1. Buy organic food.

2. Drive a more fuel-efficient car, or at drive more fuel-efficiently.

3. Conserve your energy use.

4. Fuel up your car after dark, when you’re less likely to lose petrol to evaporation.

5. Purchase responsibly harvested fish.

Anybody who has ever run a car – or at least anyone who has done it well – knows the importance of keeping the car tuned up to perfection and getting regular maintenance work. Diligently you’ll take the car to the garage like clockwork every 5,000 miles and have all the basics checked to ensure that things are still running smoothly. This is the best way to know that your car is safe, working correctly and remains a constant in your life. But while this is clearly good practice for your car, it is not necessarily a good idea to apply these rules to your sex life.

For your girlfriend or wife, doing the same thing over and over again and being stuck in a car maintenance style routine is a very bad thing when it comes to sex. What’s good for your car often is not a good principal to apply to your sex, so it is worth changing things up in order to keep everyone happy and ensure that everything still goes well. Indeed, too many men treat sex like an oil change, so here are some signs that you may be doing that, and therefore would need to change things up.

You have sex on a schedule

Having sex on a regular schedule is exactly like the way you might go in for an oil change after a certain number of miles have ticked over. Perhaps you only have sex on Fridays or you only sex right before bed – it doesn’t matter, the problem is the monotony. While consistency is a good thing for your car, it is actually a very bad thing for your sex life and can lead to a number of problems that would really not be ideal. So break out of this rut and do something spontaneous, there are so many different options with sex that there is no need to fall into boring routine. Be exciting, be dangerous and above all, be different.

Your sex lasts about as long as an oil change

How long does your sex last these days? Many garages can complete an oil change in about ten minutes, but if you’re looking for that kind of speed in your love life then there is something clearly very wrong and this needs changing as badly as the oil in your car. Stretch things out a bit – include long foreplay sessions or try different things in order to ensure that you take your time and don’t rush. Be sure not to try to rush in without taking care of her needs first. This will ensures a more sexual experience for both of you.

Her levels of lubrication are low

Cars need to be well oiled to be working properly, and in this regard it is fairly easy to sort it out – you just pop into the garage and get things oiled up again for a good bit of lubrication. If your girlfriend is lacking some lubrication of your course there are simple ways to add it in, but this is not the right way to be treating your sex life. Instead you should ensure you are doing everything that you can make her experience as good as yours. Don’t fall back on the easy ways of doing things, as you would with sorting our car. This is your relationship and it is worth much more to you than a car that is running smoothly. Take the advice of this article and you have no worries about treating your sex life the wrong way.

Do you feel your bedroom needs a makeover? The bedroom is your personal area and has to give you the positive vibes. It should bring peace when you are back home. It is important that you pay detailed attention to the furniture, the layout and the colours you use in your private room.

Here’s providing some interesting Feng Shui tips that will bring the charm and make your bedroom a peaceful area to live in.

Make it clutter-free

First and foremost, you need to keep your bedroom clean. The books in the book rack, clothes in the closet and things should look neat and tidy. A messy room brings in unnecessary anxiety and thus can make you feel drained. If you have something on your mind that isn’t allowing you to sleep, keep a diary next to you bedside in order to note down the important stuff. This will enable your mind to free itself and take rest.

Call for the nature

It’s a known fact that looking at nature can give your mind peace and can also lower down the blood pressure. Pick a plant or a flower pot that you like and place it in your room; this will bring in positive thoughts. A beautiful scenic picture, a mini fountain or a fish tank can also be a good idea.

Pamper your senses

By pampering your bodily senses, you can feel fresh and free always. Opt for a nice aroma scent like lavender or rose for your bedroom. Aromatherapy too can be useful. You can also try adding an incredibly plush rug or a chenille throw.

Paired up things look good

Any item that you keep in your room can bring in harmony if it’s paired with something else, like a matching pair of lamps or picture frames.

Include a metal element

Metal elements bring in qualities of sharpness, clarity, efficiency and precision. A balanced metal presence in your room will allow you to live with clarity and lightness. Feng Shui element of metal should be placed in the north area of your room. The metal can be in the colours of grey and white.

Colours do the trick

Colour plays a huge role in Feng Shui. Different colours represent different energy. Each colour is an expression of five elements i.e. fire, earth, metal, wood and water. Each element is used in a specific part of the area as per the Feng shui map. Pick a colour according to the energy you want to flow in your room for any specific part of the room. Play with different colours to spice up the space. Any décor items that go well with the wall color will bring in the vibrancy. Don’t shy away from bright colours. Experiment with different things and place your furniture where it looks good like around a contrasting colored wall.

Your electronics

It is noted that the electromagnetic fields from televisions, wireless devices, computers etc. while off, can interfere with the brain and nervous system signals, disturbing your harmonious sleep. The machines can keep you up late night and spoil your body system. Hence choose wisely.

A well planned strategy

Move your bed facing opposite the door. Place it against a solid wall painted with your favourite colour. Lock the door before you go to sleep so that your pet doesn’t disturb you in the middle of the night. Choose your bed linen smartly, a circular design works well. Pick bed sheet colours that are soothing to the mind.

Soothing piece of furniture or art

Pick a few little things like a pottery barn or anything that brings a smile on your face. A photo frame of your loved ones can also do the wonders.

If only we could stay young forever. Eternal youth is the dream of every single individual. Imagine all the things that could be accomplished by a person who had the experience that comes with age, but if they had the energy and vitality of youth. Obviously, this is not something that as of yet is possible. However, what is possible is keeping yourself healthy and keeping yourself fit regardless of your age.

Learn How to Handle Change

As individuals start age, they are faced with a wide range of changes in their lives. Some of these changes are related to circumstances around them. Their children may move out of the house, their friends and loved ones may pass away, they may retire, or they may even move out of their home. All of these external and circumstantial situations have an effect on our health.

While we cannot stop life’s changes from happening, what we can do is to take positive action now. Take steps to keep yourself happy. Visit your doctor regularly. Learn about procedures like balloon tubing that could one day save your life. All of these positive things will help you to face whatever challenges life brings with joy.

Find Something New to Love

In addition to maintaining a good diet and a steady routine of exercise, there are other things that individuals can do to maintain good health as they age. For example, an individual who is continually presenting themselves with new challenges will be happy, and they will be healthier. So what this means is that as we age, we have to find new things that we love. As our circumstances change, our job changes, and our children move out of the home, we need to find a way to redirect our energies towards something that we are passionate about. Maybe you have always had an interest in the medical field. Why not take the time to learn how things connected to the medical field work?

Don’t Isolate Yourself

One of the worst things that an individual can do for their health is to isolate themselves as they grow older. An individual who chooses to isolate themselves as they age will find happiness replaced with sadness. They will find a calm heart replaced with one that is full of anxiety. This sadness and anxiety will then result in them having to face physical health issues.

It is better to be positive in life. Get regular checkups from doctors. Have them check your heart. When necessary, take advantage of lifesaving therapies like balloon catheters to extend your life and to increase your life’s quality.

Really, no one wants to get older. However, the truth of the matter is that all of us will age. However, growing older does not have to mean that the excitement and the joy in life that we have will disappear. In fact, quite to the contrary our older years in life can be some of the most enjoyable years that we have if we take steps to keep ourselves mentally, emotionally, and spiritually healthy as we age.

Sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything you need to, and so you create more by staying up late until you drop, and getting up early the next day to get a head start. However, sleep is not an enemy, it’s absolutely essential to your wellbeing and, if you’re still concerned about time management, getting enough sleep will actually make you more productive.

According to a new study from researchers at the University of California-San Francisco, women who slept less than six hours per night had far more inflammation than men who slept that amount. While this doesn’t prove the lack of sleep caused increased inflammation, it does raise questions about how important sleep is to your wellness. Inflammation is seen as an important factor in heart attacks and strokes, and so it’s best to avoid it by getting plenty of sleep.

Aside from this, when you get more sleep you’re more focused and effective the next day. It’s important to embrace a lifestyle that will make you happier and healthier in the short-term, as it may extend your life. What’s the point of utilising a few more hours now, when you’ll end up missing out on years later on. All it takes is getting more than six hours of sleep every night (the recommended amount is seven to nine hours). It’s a small change, but it can make a huge difference to your health and happiness.

Charles Duhigg writes in The Power of Habit that you have the ability to reshape your routine and, thus, your life. You may think you’ve been burning the midnight oil for too long to change anything now, but extinguishing that flame might be easier than you think. According to Duhigg, routines begin with a cue; in this case, wanting to get things done. However, for the routine to develop it also needs to be justified with a reward; the satisfaction of checking something else off the to-do list. This is how you get into a sleepless cycle, but you can use this knowledge to create a better routine. Change your mindset to a new cue; wanting to feel more focused and alert. Then, the reward will be that new feeling, and you’ll get the sleep you need.

Why do so many of us stay in relationships that are no good? Being alone can be scary, and so you may be tempted to put up with a lot more than you should, but surely if the warning signs are there, it’s better to get out now and look for the partner who’s worth the trouble. When you do break up with someone who isn’t right for you, the chances are that your friends and family tell you that you should have done it a long time ago, so here are three questions you need to ask yourself to avoid the dreaded “I told you so”.

1. Are your needs being met – and being met consistently?

While everyone makes mistakes, and it takes a lifetime to learn how to give your partner affection, intimacy and time in the right way, if he withholds these things on more than a few occasions, you should sit him down and openly discuss it. He may not realise what he’s doing, but if he continues to fail at meeting your needs, it’s time to look for someone who will.

2. Is the sex nonexistent?

Having a good sex life doesn’t just give your sexual health and wellbeing a boost; it plays a massive part in your relationship wellness. Everyone goes through the odd dry spell, but if the sex is always bad or you’re starting to find yourself giving the “I have a headache” excuse, there may be an underlying problem at play in your relationship. Try to get to the root of the problem, talk about it and try to make it work, but if you don’t want him in your bed, why do you want him in your life?

3. Do you keep trying to change him?

Your relationship is with the man you see in front of you, not with the potential image of the man you have in your head. People do change over time, but there’s no point gambling your happiness on that happening. Stop forcing him to be something he’s not and a man who’s already the man you see in your mind.

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. For the uninitiated, a brief explanation of what that means may be in order. Neuro deals with how we take in information whether it be from sight, hearing, taste, touch or smell; Linguistic refers to the language patterns we use and our thought processes; Programming is how the former combine to influence our behaviour. NLP is essentially an understanding of how our minds function, what makes us tick, and it’s been used with great success for decades as a powerful personal and professional development tool which has been exploited in business and in sport. But it has wider applications which are now beginning to be recognised. So could NLP help you lose weight?

For many of us, food is both an emotional and emotive experience. How many of us have felt something akin to despair as the pounds creep on, leading us to embark on one diet or exercise regime after another? And yet we continue to eat when we’re not really hungry and crave foodstuffs that we know very well will do nothing to address our weight issues to get the short-lived high this indulgence gives us. Our love of “comfort food” is such a deep-seated habit for so many people that it can be a very difficult one to break. In order to do so, we need to fundamentally change our relationship with food and remove the emotional factors that lead us into cycles of yoyo dieting.

NLP weight loss techniques can alter the way you relate to food, removing the emotion from eating, helping you to control your weight loss and, most importantly, to maintain it once you reach your target. So many of us become entrenched in our own negative body image that we begin to believe that effecting such a change would be nothing short of a miracle, and we simply give up trying. But with a better understanding of what makes us eat emotionally and when we’re in greatest danger of doing so, we can start to make positive changes.

So how does NLP work when it comes to weight loss?

In order to change your relationship with food, you first have to understand it. A qualified NLP practitioner can help you to recognise the emotional triggers that lead you to comfort eating, enabling you to replace them with logical, objective steps which can help change those habits. They’ll help you to examine your attitudes to diet and exercise and demonstrate how these can be modified to leave you feeling more positive and able to move forward.

NLP can help you to do away with your negative body image and the idea that you simply have to settle for the body you’ve got. It does so by giving you a defined plan to address your weight, health and fitness issues, effectively reprogramming those triggers that have repeatedly led you to revert to bad habits in the past. Once you’re able to process your thoughts and feelings in relation to food and exercise in a more dispassionate way, you’ll find that weight is no longer the obsession it once was and you could find yourself heading towards your target weight more easily than you’d ever imagined possible.

So if you’re fed up of endless diet fads that have simply left you feeling worse than before when you put back on all the weight you’d lost and more, and you would like calorie counting to be a thing of the past, explore how power of NLP could put you back in control – for good.

How Can You Provide Healthy Family Meals on a BudgetFamilies are unpredictable and stressful things. Such a diverse group of people with such a broad set of interests and ideals is always going to be an unstable thing. In family groups it’s love which brings them together, love and some sense of commitment or even devotion.

Just because you love your family doesn’t mean you understand them. If you’re working full time and you come home and immediately get bombarded by teenage angst, toddler tantrums and sulking children it can be overwhelming. You’ve just worked all day, you’re tired and then that happens. It can feel like the world is falling down and that being tired has become your neutral setting.

The fact is that kids will always have a reason for acting out, even if it isn’t an immediately obvious one. While discipline is certainly important in dealing with this, it’s not always a solution. It’s important that your kids know that they can’t simply act out and get their own way but it’s also important that you pay attention to whatever may have caused the issue in the first place.

Change is one of the biggest causes of upset in a family structure. Children experience things slower than we do. Weeks can quickly become months in our minds and we can forget that they always drag a bit longer for kids. This means they’re more sensitive to change. It’s common for families themselves to reform today due to new jobs or new partners. This can leave kids unsupervised or feeling unloved, in these cases it’s attention which they’ll want. Technological advancement is another great cause of change, it’s also widening the generational gaps. This means your kids are going to feel much more different from you than they once would have. Again this could cause acting out.

The best way to deal with all of these things is by openly communicating with your children. If you explain and then answer their questions on whatever the issue may be they’ll feel like they can come to you with other issues and feel more comfortable with the changes. As long as they feel like they have you as a constant in their lives everything should be much easier to handle.

How Does Change Affect Families?

transgenderFor the wellbeing of a 19-year-old transgender student, you might think that all-male fraternities would be best avoided. However, not only was Donnie Collins never subjected to the hazing or the homophobia sometimes associated with Greek life, the brothers at Phi Alpha Tau at Emerson College in Boston embraced him when he rushed the fraternity last year and have even gone one step further – raising the money Collins needed for “top surgery” to remove his breasts.

The fraternity launched a campaign to help Collins’ out when they heard that the insurance would not pay for such sexual-reassignment surgery. The surgery costs $8,100, but thanks to a video posted by the brothers on fundraising site IndieGogo.com, they’ve raised over double that amount. Now with the funds at nearly $17,000, Collins has asked that the additional money be donated to the Jim Collins Foundation (no relation), which provides financial assistance for sex-reassignment surgeries.

Collins has been so overwhelmed by the media “fire storm” that he cannot talk by phone, but he released a statement saying ‘It’s been such a long road, and it has been life-altering to find support and brotherhood. … The support I have received has made such a difference in my life.’ Jason Meir, director of student activities at Emerson, commented, ‘It wasn’t the least bit surprising to me that Donnie was admitted going into the pledge, and that they would take him as a member. Our fraternities are very open and affirming, and really are just accepting of all people and all types.’

When Collins first heard what his brothers were planning, he didn’t realise the huge impact that it could have on the wellness of other people like him. ‘I was just like, “Oh that’s such a Tau thing to do,” and I didn’t even think it was that weird,’ he said. ‘But then I started sending [the indiegogo link] out to people, and they were like, “Oh my god, that’s amazing! See, Greek Life isn’t bad; it’s amazing.”’

According to fraternity brother Christian Bergren-Aragon, who made a plea for funds to help Collins in the IndieGogo video, the situation is about more than money. ‘We are here … to tell a story. The story of transformation, the story of self-discovery, and the story of brotherhood, he said. He added, ‘have conversations with your family and friends, sit down and talk with them.’

pollutionWhen it comes to global warming we’re going to need a grand global effort to combat it and even with that it’s not going to be a quick or easy process. Human beings churn out a lot of waste in the forms of pollution and rubbish and most of it is necessary to maintain our way of life. Or at least it was.

There’s a huge vested interest as Governments make a lot of money from fossil fuels and taxes on those products so they’re not about to spend huge sums of money to cut themselves off from one of their major sources of income. The fact is that with the technology available and with enough time, money and tenacity we could cut our current levels of pollution by as much as 70%. That’s huge. The reasons we’re not – little interest, laziness and people not believing we need to.

More than half of the world’s population live in cities and as such the changes need to start here. Most industry pollution can also be traced back to these cities so if they started the ball rolling then we’d see levels of pollution across the globe plummet. It wouldn’t be a quick process, we’re looking at around 20 years for a drop of 30 percent but any progress as this point would be a good thing!

As with all big changes, it has to start with a smaller change. It will take individuals deciding that they want or even need to stop the levels of pollution rising even further to make the change globally. Governments will sway with their populations but it’s down to you, the individual to start that ball rolling so what are you waiting for?
