Taking an elderly parent into your home and caring for them can be a stressful time for any family. Often this move for parents is because they are beginning to be physically or mentally impaired in some way. Part of the stress is the concern for their safety and health and what you may be responsible for in future. Here are some ways to ensure their safety and increase your own peace of mind as you embark on this journey together.

Parents Who Are Physically Disabled

If your parents are physically handicapped, they will need extra help to carry out daily activities. There are many safety devices available to make it easier for getting around in your home. Wheelchairs and other medical equipment can be provided by Medicare when a physician has prescribed their use so ask about what you may be qualified for. Other equipment is also available at medical supply stores, and can occasionally be found at discount stores and second-hand stores at a much lower price.

Parents who are still able to walk may have weakened limbs, or may have balance problems. A walker placed in their bedroom can be of great benefit in helping them to move around on their own. Safety rails placed on the bed and grab bars in the bathroom can also help to stabilize them, when getting up or taking a shower. Make sure they are installed correctly and at the right heights.

Parents Who Are Mentally Disabled

Parents who are beginning to have memory problems will need help taking medication. They will require supervision which will have to increase as they age. It’s very important not to leave a parent who has memory problems unsupervised in the kitchen, or in other areas where burn or safety risk is a factor. When taking the memory impaired out for any reason, it is best to avoid large crowds where the elderly can become confused and supervision becomes difficult.

Day care centers for the elderly can provide age appropriate activities for the memory impaired, while allowing you a little time for yourself. They are especially helpful for those with Alzheimer’s, where the goal is to retain as much memory as possible for as long as possible. As Alzheimer’s progresses, wandering can become a problem as well. It is very important to have increased home security so elderly who are beset by this condition do not become confused and leave the home. A home security system like the ones on Northstar alarm reviews which can be controlled by a touchpad security code, are very helpful for insuring that a parent with Alzheimer’s will not wander outside. Security gates placed in key areas in the home can also be very beneficial.

Parents who have mid-term Alzheimer’s may need the help of a nurses’ aide. Nurses’ aides are employed at many home health care agencies and are trained in helping older people with memory problems. Check your insurance to see if they will help with the cost of employment.

Staying Educated

One of the best things to do when taking care of parents in your home, is to take advantage of as many opportunities to learn about elderly caregiving as possible. There is a lot of research available online to help you, as well as forums where people share their own experiences and ideas. Another very helpful resource is assisted living facilities and nursing homes in your area. They will usually have someone who can give you advice if you are having a difficult problem in caregiving. Churches with senior ministries can also give practical help and can guide you to social organizations that assist in taking care of the elderly.

Caring for an elderly parent can be a blessing instead of a worry. Many children who care for elderly parents say a close relationship is fused with them at this critical time, and provides lasting memories for adults and kids alike.

Many adults actively look forward to retirement because it means ample free time and the ability to leave the workforce behind. However, retirement and old age can be a challenging time for adults. These years may be rather lonely, filled with bored days and an empty home. Older adults may also face physical and financial challenges that can cause them stress, pain and grief. It can be difficult to watch your loved ones during this time of their lives, but there are some things you can do to help them cope.

Make Regular Visits

Many older adults spend long hours alone at home each day. This can be an isolating and depressing experience, and this type of lifestyle can be difficult to endure mentally and emotionally. If you live nearby, make an effort to make regular visits. If you live farther away, offer to fly your loved one to your home for a lengthy visit, or plan a longer visit periodically to break up the monotony of their daily life.

Offer Suggestions and Ideas for Fun

Because you cannot be with your loved one around the clock, you may consider making suggestions for fun ways to spend their free time. Encourage them to become active with social activities at a local senior center, and assist them with transportation if possible. You can also bring them books, crafts and other items that they can have fun with when you are not visiting.

Provide Financial Support When Necessary

Financial stress is unfortunately rather common for older adults. You may consider speaking openly with your loved ones about their financial status. Offer budgeting ideas, or assist them with finding a more affordable housing solution if necessary. In some cases, providing them with regular financial assistance may be helpful.

Monitor Their Health

You may also get in the habit of inquiring about their health regularly. Ask how well-checks and doctor visits went. Actively observe their mental state, and take note of any changes that may be a concern. If necessary, set up doctor appointments so that your loved one receives the healthcare needed at this time of life.

Assist them with a Wheelchair or Other Mobility Features
Mobility can become an issue later in life. According to Medical For You, there are a number of mobility devices that may be used to promote their independence for as long as possible. This may include a wheelchair, a walker or a scooter. You can help with the selection and purchase of the device, and you can ensure that the home is suitable for accommodating the mobility device.

Aging is tough, and as you age there are many ailments and diseases you need to look out for. But there are also ways to prevent the common pains that come along with aging. Here are a few tips to help you age with as little pain as possible.

Headaches

Many people get headaches more frequently as they age and when your head hurts, you really feel your age. There are many things you can do to help prevent headaches before they become a real problem. You can start by stretching your neck on a regular basis, especially if you use a computer, or sit in a stationary position often. You can also help lessen the severity and frequency of your headaches by reducing your stress levels. Stress can be reduced by changing your lifestyle, but it can also lessen with deep breathing, or meditation exercises.

Back Pain

As you get older, there will be more stress on your spine. Your spine takes a lot of pressure from bad posture, poor sleeping positions, excess weight, and a number of other factors. But there are things you can do to lessen how much your back will hurt as you get older. For example, if you pay attention to your posture now and fix the way you sit and stand, you will not have to pay for that bad posture later in life. You should also do things like strengthen your core muscles so your back does not have to work as hard to support your spine. Pay attention to any injuries to your back immediately so you can correct them, and not have to deal with long term pain.

Muscle Strains

When you continue to push yourself as you age, your muscles will pay for it. If you strain yourself by doing the things you used to do even though you are getting older, muscle strain is inevitable. There are a number of things you can do to cut back on these strains. You can stretch often, exercise, pace yourself, and perhaps even see a chiropractor. If you do have strain pain, it is a good idea to take some anti-inflammatory medication and rest so you do not have long term pain in that area.

Arthritis

Arthritis causes joint pain and swelling, and will make your joints feel stiff and swollen. Even if you have arthritis in certain areas, there are things you can do to diminish the amount of pain you will feel. The best thing you can do for yourself is to stay in motion. The longer you sit in a stationary position, the more you will hurt. You should do weight training as well as aerobic and cardio activity. Stretching will also help lessen your pain, and remaining at a healthy weight can help prevent further pain. If you want, you can talk to your doctor about where to buy kinesio tape, which can be put on achy joints in order to help you get through the times that are really tough and painful.

Aging brings plenty of ailments along with it, but there is no reason to sit back and let it happen. If you take these tips to heart, and work on managing your health now, you can remain pain free or, at the very least, in the smallest amount of pain possible for the ailments that attack your body. Keep these tips in mind at all times, and make sure you fight the pain you have. It is possible to age gracefully when you know the tips for prevention.

If only we could stay young forever. Eternal youth is the dream of every single individual. Imagine all the things that could be accomplished by a person who had the experience that comes with age, but if they had the energy and vitality of youth. Obviously, this is not something that as of yet is possible. However, what is possible is keeping yourself healthy and keeping yourself fit regardless of your age.

Learn How to Handle Change

As individuals start age, they are faced with a wide range of changes in their lives. Some of these changes are related to circumstances around them. Their children may move out of the house, their friends and loved ones may pass away, they may retire, or they may even move out of their home. All of these external and circumstantial situations have an effect on our health.

While we cannot stop life’s changes from happening, what we can do is to take positive action now. Take steps to keep yourself happy. Visit your doctor regularly. Learn about procedures like balloon tubing that could one day save your life. All of these positive things will help you to face whatever challenges life brings with joy.

Find Something New to Love

In addition to maintaining a good diet and a steady routine of exercise, there are other things that individuals can do to maintain good health as they age. For example, an individual who is continually presenting themselves with new challenges will be happy, and they will be healthier. So what this means is that as we age, we have to find new things that we love. As our circumstances change, our job changes, and our children move out of the home, we need to find a way to redirect our energies towards something that we are passionate about. Maybe you have always had an interest in the medical field. Why not take the time to learn how things connected to the medical field work?

Don’t Isolate Yourself

One of the worst things that an individual can do for their health is to isolate themselves as they grow older. An individual who chooses to isolate themselves as they age will find happiness replaced with sadness. They will find a calm heart replaced with one that is full of anxiety. This sadness and anxiety will then result in them having to face physical health issues.

It is better to be positive in life. Get regular checkups from doctors. Have them check your heart. When necessary, take advantage of lifesaving therapies like balloon catheters to extend your life and to increase your life’s quality.

Really, no one wants to get older. However, the truth of the matter is that all of us will age. However, growing older does not have to mean that the excitement and the joy in life that we have will disappear. In fact, quite to the contrary our older years in life can be some of the most enjoyable years that we have if we take steps to keep ourselves mentally, emotionally, and spiritually healthy as we age.

We have a certain image of the elderly which, perhaps, is more innocent that we’d like to believe. You might think of slippers and cardigans, knitting and golf, but what about their sexual wellness? Surely, after a certain age, you stop thinking about sexual health and crack out the Werther’s Originals, right? Fortunately for them, more and more senior citizens are discovering that just because they’re older doesn’t mean their sex life is over. They’re not dead yet, so why should their sex life be?

According to Ron Yap, director of male urologic health program at Concord Hospital Centre for Urologic care, the World War II generation was more accepting of getting older and becoming impotent as they aged. He notes, ‘They feel like, this was life, and they sucked it up.’ However, the succeeding generation, who came of age in time of free love and the Sexual Revolution, is less inclined to lose their libido.

This has been backed up by a survey, published in the 2007 New England Journal of Medicine, which looked at the bedroom behaviours of over 3,000 57- to 85-year-olds in the US. Up to three-quarters of respondents were found to still be sexually active, which was about the same frequency of sexual activity as was reported by the 18- to 59-year-olds in the 1992 National Health and Social Life Survey. Yap comments, ‘Clearly, the myth that as people age they naturally lose interest in sex is being debunked.’

Society and the media have appeared to get on board with seniors getting back in the saddle. Modern medicine and lifestyle pharmaceutical drugs have made leaps and bounds in helping the elderly to have the staying power of youth, movies such as Something’s Gotta Give have explored older people dealing with their sexuality, and now there is even a burgeoning number of online dating services geared towards those over a certain age (discounting that shockingly awful one on The Apprentice!) As Yap states, ‘My job is to keep guys in the game as long as possible. For some people sexual vigour means so much to them. We don’t try to qualify it.’

Staying healthy in old age is both an art and a science. Genetics plays an important part in how you age, but you can also take specific actions to improve your health, as you get older. Medical research has provided useful information on how people can stay healthy long into the later years.

Healthy Diet

Eating right is important at any age, but it’s particularly important as people get older. Proper nutrition can help prevent anemia, blood pressure problems, blood sugar irregularities and constipation. Lean meats, whole grains, omega-3 fatty acids and plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables provide the right vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to ensure a healthy body and a sharp mind.

Regular Exercise

Getting regular exercise in your later years is as important as when you are young. Stretching helps keep older bodies limber and helps to improve balance. Walking is still the best exercise because it works the joints of the body without producing hard impacts that can cause injury. Swimming is another good exercise that works all the muscles of the body without impact on tender joints. Working out with weights at the gym can help to keep bones strong and improve muscle tone. Of course, you should always start slowly and gradually build up your endurance and strength over time in order to avoid injury.

Engage in Social Activities

Researchers find that people who spend time with friends and family on a regular basis have a better mental attitude, improved memory skills and better all-around health. Staying involved with other people helps to keep people optimistic and engaged in life, which prevents sedentary and isolation.

Regular Visits to the Doctor

Visiting your doctor on a regular basis can help to keep you healthy in both body and mind. The physician can monitor your health through test results and physical examination to catch small problems that can become more serious if not treated. Physicians can also monitor your mental condition to ensure that medications your take do not affect your mental capacity.

Help with Strenuous Tasks

As people age, they must face the fact that they might need help with heavy tasks around the home to avoid injury. Fortunately, assisted living help can take over the burdensome tasks of housekeeping and laundry. Some people prefer to stay in their own homes and have in home care to manage these heavier duties. Either way, getting help can prevent injury and help you to stay healthy and active well into your senior years.

Many elderly people who live alone have trouble relying on themselves to cook, clean, do their laundry and take the appropriate medications. This is many times due to ailing health, and it is in these cases that loved ones of elderly people seek care assistance. Three possible caring options for our loved ones who cannot take care of themselves are assisted living facilities, private caretakers or nurses and nursing homes.

Assisted Living Facilities

These facilities are great options for seniors who need help with basic daily activities. While this option is not covered by Medicaid or Medicare, there is a lot of affordable senior housing. Atlanta experts recommend Calvin Court and Philips Tower as two affordable senior housing options in that area. Small apartments are given to each resident that they can furnish with their own personal items. There is no need to worry about the senior having to cook, clean, do his or her own laundry or wonder what prescriptions need to be taken when because all this is covered by the staff. Not only are these amenities available, but residents get to socialize with other seniors, which is a great advantage to those who have spent most of their life alone. Each assisted living facility offers numerous options, and depending on the budget of the senior and loved ones willing to help financially, as many or as little of these amenities can be chosen.

Private caretakers or nurses

Many seniors refuse to leave their homes to go anywhere else. In these cases, if the seniors’ loved ones are able to afford a part-time or full-time private caretaker or nurse, then this option would be a good one for seniors. This option may be good for elderly folks who need little assistance and are in fairly good health because this is not a 24 hour option like nursing homes or assisted living facilities. However, these people will make sure that anything the senior needs is taken care of. Food, light cleaning and health checkups are the most common services provided.

Nursing Homes

This option is covered by Medicaid and Medicare with the proper approval from a physician. Nursing homes are very affordable and provide a variety of health care options for people with specialized health needs. The medical staff will be able to pay close attention to the senior’s health. This option is a good one for elderly people who have serious health issues and need constant medical attention. Semi-private rooms, meals and numerous activities are available in nursing homes.
