When you look in the mirror, you might see teeth that are crooked because there isn’t enough space in the mouth for all of them to grow in properly. There could be teeth that have gaps in between them. You might have difficulty eating or talking because of the condition of your teeth. Orthodontics gives more than just a beautiful smile. It can change the entire layout of your mouth.

Self-Esteem

One of the reasons why you might want to consider orthodontic treatment is to increase your self-esteem. If you don’t see straight teeth that give you the beautiful smile that you want, then it can play a factor on how you feel about the rest of your appearance. When you start seeing that the teeth can be straight with orthodontics, then you can feel better about the way that you look. Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for teenagers who feel as though they want to have straight teeth. Adults can have the treatment as well so that they have teeth that are aligned properly to give the desired appearance.

Biting Down

If you notice that you have problems with biting on foods, then orthodontic treatment can solve this issue. According to the Coquitlam Centre Dental Clinic, braces can help pull the teeth into an alignment so that you have a natural bite. You won’t have the top teeth that extend over the lower jaw or bottom teeth that seem to appear as though they are in front of your mouth. Creating a natural bite can take some of the tension off of the jaws. This can decrease any headaches that you might have as well as relieve pressure on the gums and teeth.

Crowding

Some people have a mouth that doesn’t have enough room for all of the teeth inside. This can cause the teeth to be crooked, and if the teeth are crooked, it can be hard for them to function properly while you’re eating. When the wisdom teeth grow in, there likely won’t be room, so they will either grow under the back teeth or further push the teeth together in the front of the mouth. After a few teeth are pulled, orthodontic treatment can be used to get the teeth back in a straight line. When the teeth aren’t crowded, there will be a decrease in bacteria build up, which will decrease the chances of cavities forming or teeth chipping.

Orthodontic treatment is ideal for teenagers and adults who want a straight smile or if there are issues involving the teeth that need to be corrected for your overall health. The treatment doesn’t last long. Most people are out of braces or other methods of treatment in only one or two years. The smile that you have as a result will be something that you want others to see.

While many people are health conscious and see their doctor when needed, few people feel that oral hygiene matters as much. However, poor oral health can lead to a plethora of other health problems that can affect almost anything, including your heart. Here are just a few reasons why you should never delay important dental work:

Compromised Oral Health

Your mouth’s environment is a delicate balance. Too much of one thing can throw off the balance and damage your teeth. Failure to address issues found in your mouth can result in an imbalance which can only worsen over time. Dangerous bacteria can thrive and cause a lot of damage to your oral and overall health if not treated.

Compromised Physical Health

If you fail to address cavities or other issues in your mouth, this can lead to an abscess. Left untreated, the abscess could spread into an infection of the bone, skin or blood stream causing you serious harm. Once the infection has spread, it can seriously affect more than just your oral health.

Greater Pain And More Extensive Treatment

A small cavity untreated and allowed to grow can eventually get to the root area. The cavity could go from showing no symptoms, to suffering from tooth sensitivity or toothache, to increased pain when eating something sweet, hot or cold or pain while biting down. It could eventually create a hole in the tooth. The simplest treatment for a cavity would be a filling in the affected area. A cavity that has progressed into more of the tooth’s structure or inner layers could be treated using a crown. A cavity that has progressed into the nerve or pulp of the tooth causing it to die would result in a root canal. Each of these three processes gets more labor intensive, painful and can contribute to recovery time for the patient.

Greater Expense

As with any type of medical treatment, the more extensive the work performed the more expensive it will be for the patient. A simple cavity, if addressed in time, could be fixed for minimal cost. Untreated, it could soar to a very expensive fee for root canal or even more expensive if you add the cost of additional medical personnel for an infection that has spread beyond the mouth.

Compromised Physical Appearance

Depending upon the cavity’s location, the patient’s physical appearance could be affected as well. Teeth more visible in the patient’s smile could be affected by the pitting or staining. The treatments used to correct the issue would be visible as well depending upon the materials used to correct the affected area.

Negative Affect to Self Esteem

Dental issues contribute to low self esteem causing limited interaction with peers. The person will not smile or will cover their smile to avoid showing their teeth. Poor health as a result of infection will affect mood which in turn affects self esteem.

Practicing good oral health is good for your teeth and the rest of your body. If you need dental work, it’s important not to delay so you can avoid complicated problems in the future.

Diets are all over the place. Whether they’re about improving your nutrition, losing weight or simply boosting your wellness and wellbeing, going on a diet can be really bad for your health. Fad diets are the worst for this – you’ll recognise a fad diet because everyone will be going on about it for a short period of time, and then they will find that it’s unsustainable and will move onto the next thing.

Fad diets tend to make all kinds of impossible claims. They seem to set themselves up as some kind of ‘miracle’ and tend to say that the dieter will lose a staggering amount of weight in a very short space of time. There is often some kind of celebrity spokesperson who illustrates how effective the detox/starvation routine can be. They are often pictured in a tiny bikini, showing off a very slender body is if to say that any of us can look like that in just six weeks, when the reality is far from being the case. This celebrity will talk about how much her life has improved since going on the diet, and there will never be any mention of the subsequent weight gain (or how all her pictures for the shoot have been airbrushed).

Something else to bear in mind – fad diets are boring. When you’re counting out every calorie or every gram of fat, life can become pretty dull – and unfortunately you can become pretty dull too. The only thing worse than a boring diet is a boring dieter, droning on about the calorie content of things or how they’ve cut out certain food groups or that they are having their life changed by some kind of unsustainable milkshake diet.

Unfortunately, it’s also the case that any weight loss through a fad diet is likely to be regained, with a few more extra pounds to keep it company!

In the past, dental insurance didn’t seem like a necessity, but that is changing. Dental insurance helps pay for some of the costs of dental care. Don’t ignore the importance of dental insurance or visiting the dentist to keep your teeth healthy.

You Have Children

If you have children, you definitely need dental insurance. Taking care of teeth early is extremely important, and with laws to protect children, you can even get in trouble if your child has excessive cavities. Insurance provides a means to pay for those routine visits and fillings. In addition, there are many treatments for kids that help protect their teeth, such as sealants and fluoride treatments.

Preventative Care

Preventative care is the most important aspect of dental health. With proper preventative care, you usually avoid more serious problems, such as cavities, infections and missing teeth. Most dental plans cover preventative care at 100 percent, and they are usually not subject to the deductible. With insurance, you are more likely to actually go in for routine exams and cleanings, which play a major role in good oral hygiene and avoiding cavities.

Dental Costs

Dental costs can become expensive. One cavity might only cost you $100 or $200 if you don’t have insurance, but that’s money that could go toward something fun. If you have a more serious problem, such as an infected tooth or a tooth that needs a crown, you end up paying thousands of dollars out of pocket without insurance. Having dental insurance may cover 80 or 50 percent of those costs, saving you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Cosmetic Services

Let’s face it: the appearance of your teeth matter. Having a beautiful, white smile is becoming increasingly important. While dental insurance won’t pay for an entire mouth restoration, it can help cover some cosmetic costs, such as an implant for a missing tooth or a porcelain crown. Having dental insurance can make the difference between getting a mental bridge or a porcelain implant that looks and works like your real tooth.

Overall Health

According to Ira J Moin DDS, good dental health isn’t just about nice teeth or a healthy smile. Poor dental care can affect your overall health, leading to cardiovascular disease, dementia, respiratory infections and even diabetic complications. Having dental insurance means you can have routine dental care on a regular basis, keeping your teeth and your body healthy.

Dental insurance is important for helping to pay for the costs of dental procedures. You never know when you might suddenly develop a cavity or lose a tooth, even if you practice good oral hygiene. In addition, having dental insurance allows you to go to the dentist for routine exams and cleanings, ensuring your mouth and body stay healthy.

It’s a common myth that if a heterosexual couple stops having sex, it’s the woman’s fault that the intimacy has died. There are more than a few reasons attributed to this logic – she’s too tired, she’s too busy, she’d rather be washing her hair, or pretty much anything that means she can get out of being sexual with her partner. It’s thought that millions of people live as part of sexless marriages, where the couples in question have sex less than ten times a year, a most therapists believe that around half the time the woman is to blame for this. It can be confusing to the male half of the relationship that their wives are suddenly disinterested in sex; perhaps they weren’t always so cold to the idea of intimacy, but now they can’t think of enough ways to avoid it. These men are hurt, confused and rejected, and are willing to do anything they can to reignite the passion into their relationships. But what does it feel like from the female perspective? What’s the reasoning for this lack of desire and what can couples do to resolve the issue? Of course, it’s no surprise that there isn’t an easy answer to this problem – there are myriad reasons why people lose their passion for sex.

Commonly referred to as Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder, this problem is characterised by an absence of sexual fantasies or a lack of desire for sexual activity that isn’t the result of substance abuse or abuse. Rather, if a person in a committed relationship is experiencing a low libido and it isn’t causing unhappiness to either person, it isn’t HSDD. Sex isn’t always the most important issue but in the cases where it is still a priority, it’s important that you get to the source of the problem so that you can begin rebuilding your relationship, both emotionally and physically.

Pain during intercourse is a common reason, and is to women what erectile dysfunction is to men who suffer with this problem. It’s an embarrassing topic for women who suffer with this problem and instead of talking about it, they hide away and just stop having sex. There are, like with ED, many reasons why this could be happening such as psychological and physical conditions that you should speak to your GP about. Depression is another cause of low libido, and so are antidepressants. In fact, antidepressants not only lower your libido but also temporarily remove the ability to feel romantic love.

Many women suffer with angry feelings, and this comes out in the relationships as suspicion or jealousy. And for some couples, it’s because their partner simply doesn’t turn them on anymore – perhaps their husband has gained some weight or has stopped making an effort. As this resentment builds, their libido  drops until they don’t desire a sexual relationship with their partner anymore. It’s assumed that there always has to be a reason though, and sometimes this isn’t the case. In some cases, it’s simply that the sex has stopped being exciting or passionate – in other words, it has become boring. A fulfilling sexual relationship takes two people making the effort, and although sometimes there are reasons beyond anyone’s control that make this impossible, often it boils down to communication. If you’re worried about your inability to desire sex, you may find it useful to speak to your GP.

It is not uncommon for a sexual relationship to diminish with time. It’s fairly common knowledge that the active sex life that most couples experience when they first get together is not sustained as the relationship progresses. A recent study into sexual wellness and wellbeing has also confirmed that this is the case. A recent article was published in New York Magazine, looking at information from 15 different couples who have stopped having sex and trying to understand the reasons behind it.

What the article doesn’t address, however, is what people should do when the sex goes out of their relationship. If you are in this position, you probably want some helpful advice about how to get things back on track, and, fortunately, there are some important things that you need to bear in mind.

First of all, try not to take it personally. It’s very easy, of course, to feel that your partner simply doesn’t find you attractive, but this is generally not the case, and there can be numerous other reasons for a lack of sexual intimacy.

You must also talk about it with your partner. It’s a very difficult subject to talk about and you may even fear what your partner is going to say about the situation, but not addressing the issue is one of the main reasons that situations like this get prolonged. It may not seem particularly sexy, but having a discussion about how to improve things in the bedroom can do wonders in the long run, too.

Bear in mind, too, that it is a complete fallacy that men want more sex with women. People are all different, and enjoy varying libidos.

If you are the one putting the kibosh on sex in your marriage, try to honestly examine the reasons why. It’s ok to be tired from time to time (or quite often) but if tiredness is leading to complete lack of sex in your marriage then you have to prioritise sorting it out.

Young people often look to whether they think their partners are ‘clean’ or ‘unclean’ before embarking on a sexual relationship with them, rather than finding out if there are any health risks. In a recent study, researchers discovered that factors such as this influence a young person’s sexual practices, and the patterns are very similar across the world. As nearly half of new HIV infections across the world occur in people aged 15 to 24 years, the changes in sexual behaviour in this group is vital to stem the spread of disease. The findings of this study could help to guide people to more successful safe-sex practices. The results also offer an insight into why so many HIV programmes haven’t been effective. These programmes usually focus on non-social reasons to explain why teens and young adults don’t use condoms, such as ignorance and barriers to access. As a result, all these programmes offer is advice about sex and condoms, without really looking into the social factors that affect them which is dangerous as it is too generic to factor in everyone and their own views on sex.

Researchers found seven common themes, five of which relate to sexual behaviour in general and two pertaining to condom use. The results could point to possible reasons why a teen would put themselves under risk sexually when they find themselves in such a situation. When it comes to condom use, it’s important that both boys and girls use perception to determine the need for condom protection. There are a number of reasons why people don’t feel the need to use condoms – one man in a study stated ‘depends how easy she is’ as a reason for not always using protection. All of the societies studied had a strikingly similar expectation of sexual behaviour in both genders, with men expected to be extremely heterosexually active and women chaste. Because they fear shameful and embarrassing labels, many women don’t want to say yes immediately to a man’s sexual advances. But researchers state that this ‘no’ is difficult to interpret. For men, there is also the stigma attached to a lack of experience in bed or not going out with a lot of women.

Since the advent of HIV and AIDs, there have been many more studies surrounding sexual behaviour. Many of these have focused on changing sexual practices. While the information gathered in these studies is useful, researchers claim that it isn’t as useful for understanding the reasons for the behaviour itself. Qualitative research helps to describe, they say, as well as find the reasons for it surrounding the social context. The results could explain why a woman would neglect to use a condom despite having plenty of knowledge on the subject as well as access to protection. From the seven themes, policy makers could help to create a local profile of factors that influence sexual behaviours. This could be a great template for briefing public health authorities to see which sexual health campaigns will be most useful. One idea for further research is to look at the sexual behaviour of deviants, who don’t follow the norm when it comes to sexual practices. More research could focus on men who refuse intercourse and why, for example. Or it may look into what makes people who demand condoms even with long-term partners, and what makes them different to their peers. There is much scope for more in-depth safe-sex campaigns.

Constipation is something that almost all of us will suffer from at some point in our lives. For some people it is more common than others and can strike at virtually any time – maybe it’s after a heavy meal, maybe only when eating certain foods, maybe only when they are ill – but it’s often there as a constant problem. For others constipation is a much rarer affair that only happens once in a blue moon. We all know about certain things that are likely to cause us to have constipation, for example, having a diet that is low in fibre is a sure fire way to clog things up. And other things such as putting off using the toilet, not drinking enough water and not getting enough exercise can be choke points too.

But there are some reasons that people have constipation that may not be as obvious as these ones. These can range from anything from taking unusual supplements or medications, or perhaps it being part of a much more dangerous illness that is lurking somewhere beneath the surface and currently only manifesting itself as a relatively minor symptom such as thing. We’ve produced a list of some of the less normal reasons why you might be suffering from constipation. If you are suffering from the condition, and it’s been a mystery why, these could be some of the reasons that you haven’t thought of yet.

It could be something that you may never have even heard of: hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a condition that means you have an under-active thyroid gland and this can affect the body in a number of unexpected ways. It is well known, however, to slow the processes and metabolism of the body – and this even includes the gut, which is what would cause the constipation. It’s true that not everyone who suffers from hypothyroidism gets constipation, however, if your constipation is unexpected, it can be well worth having the test with your doctor to see if the gland in your neck is under-performing.

Here’s one that you may not have been expecting: painkillers. Painkillers, especially those that are narcotics, stop the process of much of the digestive tract which can really produce a high level of constipation. And how about life’s natural painkiller; chocolate – the sad news for any chocoholics is that chocolate can certainly cause you to become constipated. If you’re eating a lot of chocolate, this could be the key to unlocking your regularity. It pays to cut down.

Funnily enough one of the strangest things that can cause constipation is the overuse of laxatives. That might sound counter-intuitive but it’s certainly a problem if you try to use them for too often as your dependence on them stops them from working properly and then eventually does the reverse of what they were supposed to do.

And dairy is another problem that often can cause constipation – even if you’ve never really thought that it might be an issue. Cheese is especially bad as its low in fibre and high in fat which is a very bad combination for constipation. Cheese is still fine to have but it’s a much better idea to mix it up as part of a balanced diet.

Depression is another unusual thing that can cause you to have constipation. This might partially be because of the fact that people on antidepressants for depression and antidepressants are well known as a problem. Depression is known to slow down the processes of the body which is a real trouble for constipation.

Losing the first bit of weight is often the easiest stage of a diet. You deprive yourself horribly of all your favourite things, exercise every day and feel super motivated – and when you stand on the scale and see that the weight is falling off, it all feels worthwhile. Fast-forward to a few months later when diet food has lost its shine, you can think of a million reasons not to exercise and the scale shows you that you’ve maintained your current weight for yet another week. It can all get a bit depressing, and if it wasn’t for the serious benefits that weight loss has on your wellness and sense of well-being, you’d probably give up.

There are many people that abandon a diet at this point, but you can avoid being one of them. We’ve compiled a list of the most common reasons that people abandon their diets, and given some helpful ideas about how you can deal with them.

  1. It’s taking a long time. It’s so easy to gain weight, and not so easy to lose it again- In order to have a successful long-term weight loss journey you need to come to terms with this and accept this. You may want to see giant weight loss each week, but the truth is that the only safe and sustainable way of losing weight is to lose one or two pounds each week. Do the math and you will realise how long your end weight goal is going to take.

  2. You get hungry- You have to eat fewer calories than you burn in order to lose weight. Some foods are high in calories, so you can only eat a little bit of them. This will leave you feeling hungry and dissatisfied. Make wise choices by filling up on low calorie foods, and ones with high fibre and high water content to prevent those hunger pangs.

  3. Missing treats- Don’t go on a restrictive weight plan that denies you your favourite foods forever. A little of what you fancy does you good, as they say!

The hardest thing about losing weight is the length of time that it takes. It can be so daunting to set out on a new diet, and to know that at the rate of one or two pounds per week (the healthy recommended amount of weight loss), it will take months or even years to reach your goal weight. People understandably want to see results quickly, especially when they are doing something as enormously difficult as changing their eating habits. This often leads people to try faddy diets, which promise that they will see results in a short space of time, but the problem is that, often, these types of diets are not good for long-term wellness.

One of the reasons that fad diets don’t work, long term, is that they are not sustainable. They often focus on eating one type of food in isolation, or cutting huge areas of food out of the diet altogether. In order to be sustainable, diets have to be something that you can maintain after the first flush of weight loss is over. As well as being unrealistic, however, these diets may also be damaging to your wellbeing – if not downright dangerous.

Fad diets are unhealthy for a number of reasons, and yet magazine editors continue to promote them.

One of the main reasons that they are unhappy is because they restrict certain food groups. This means that the diet is not balanced, and this can cause all kinds of nutrient deficiencies. Fad diets can also make you feel really run down and lacking in energy, which affects your ability to exercise as well as to enjoy your life.

The huge reductions in calorie intake which can be part of the diet can also slow down your metabolism, making it harder rather than easier to lose weight. When you do finally give up on the restrictive diet, as so often happens, the period of restrictive fasting can make you eat twice as much when the diet comes to an end, piling on more weight than you started with.

The Truth About What Fad Diets Really Do To Your Health
