Small penis syndrome, a psychological condition in which a man thinks his manhood is too small, affects many men. But is it something to actually worry about? British researchers found that 63 per cent of men complained about having a too-small penis, but that of all the men interviewed, none of them actually had a penis that was smaller than normal. A ‘normal’ penis measures in the region of 5.5 and 6.2 inches long, and 4.7 and 5.1 inches in girth. But even if your penis doesn’t fall into this category, the real question on a number of men’s minds is what a difference it makes to their sexual capabilities and their relationship.

Well, it seems to be good news on that front as well – 85 per cent of women reported that they were happy with their partner’s size. It’s not to say that women across the board don’t care about what men have ‘down there’, but it doesn’t seem to be the overriding feature of a great sex partner either. Sexual satisfaction appears to take a number of other factors into account before penis size is even mentioned. It’s a myth, possibly promoted through the porn industry, that women crave a large penis – large penises don’t instantly equate to an orgasm, and penis size can even skew a woman’s ability to achieve orgasm. In fact, for many women, having a large penis stops a lot of men from even trying in bed, assuming that getting an erection is the most they need to do to be a great lover. It doesn’t work this way though, and effort is always much more appreciated than assuming all you have to do is turn up to be great in the bedroom.

Usually when women complain about a man’s penis size, it’s that they’re also not having orgasms – because if they’re getting orgasms out of the sexual experience, they generally aren’t bothered about what size your penis is. But if you’re still worried about it, why not try mixing things up in the bedroom and aiming for positions which increase penetration and clitoral stimulation? try placing her legs on your shoulders when you’re in the missionary position, or enter her from behind when she’s on all fours. While length may not be an issue, it seems that girth is something women look for – the thicker the penis, the better, according to a number of women. This is because the greatest number of nerve endings are in the lowest part of the vagina, so when a thick penis pushes past the labia and into the lower vaginal walls, the sensation is more pleasurable. But that doesn’t mean that men with thinner penises are never going to satisfy a woman – penetrating whilst moving your hips in a circular position can increase this pleasurable sensation. Being thrusted by someone with a massive penis is actually painful for a lot of women, so it’s not on the wish list for most females. Men compare themselves to what they see in porn, but most women aren’t looking for that kind of physique. And another thing, men look at themselves from above, so their penis always looks smaller to them than it does to their partners.

Personality, as it always has been, is far more important to women than physical appearances – and that’s something to remember, regardless of what size you are.If you’re worried about your penis size, it may be worth looking into counselling to improve your confidence in the bedroom and to help you accept your body the way it is.

Sexual positions refer to the different ways in which couples position themselves physically during sexual intercourse. Popular myth suggests that the man on top style of sex was the only normal and acceptable position, but there are so many other positions that you may well enjoy even more. Furthermore, people seem to think that the more physically challenging, the better the sexual satisfaction. However, one’s competence during sex is measured by their fulfilment and not necessarily the acrobatics they go through to create a diverse sexual repertoire. The most common positions are man-on-top, woman-on-top, side-by-side and rear entry. Anal intercourse has also become more popular among both heterosexual and gay couples. All of these positions can be modified to be performed lying down, sitting, kneeling or standing, to make them more comfortable for either the man or the woman, or to make them more inventive – whichever you’re looking for.

Missionary position

The man-on-top position is one of the most common of all intercourse positions in Western cultures, and is named after the 19th century Christian missionaries who believed that the man on top was the only natural way for people to have sex. In this position, the woman lies on her back with her legs spread, and the man or woman guides the penis into the vagina. The man either lies fully on the woman or supports himself on his elbows, knees or hands. The woman can either wrap her legs around the man’s hips or back, put them up over his shoulders or leave them extended by his sides. The further up the legs are, the more intense and deep the penetration can be as the man thrusts. It’s a personal choice depending on how deep the woman likes penetration to be. This is a great position for kissing and looking at your partner, as well as leaving the woman’s hands free to touch her partner or stimulate the clitoris.

Woman on top

For this position, the man lies on his back and the woman lowers herself onto his penis. The woman can remain squatting on her knees facing the man, or she can turn around and face his feet. This is a great position for the woman as it gives her control in terms of penetration, speed and the indirect stimulation of the clitoris. Couples can both move their hands freely and it’s also ideal for pregnant women as it means both people can enjoy sex without the woman’s belly getting in the way. However, it’s not the most ideal position if you’re planning on getting pregnant as the semen tends to naturally run back out of the vagina.

Rear entry

Rear entry intercourse occurs when the penis enters the woman’s vagina while she has her back to the man – it isn’t the same as anal intercourse, where the penis is inserted into the rectum. This can be done with the woman standing but bending over and supporting herself, or with the woman on her hands and knees which is commonly referred to as doggy style. This position allows for deep penetration and vigorous thrusting if the couple wants that. It can be a natural advancement from sex standing up or from side-to-side sex, and can be an exciting addition to your sexual repertoire. However, there is a lack of intimacy with this position and there is no clitoral stimulation, so the man or woman needs to manually stimulate this area.

missionary positionLet’s talk about sex. More to the point, let’s talk about sexual positions. There’s more to a satisfying sex life than simply plumping for the traditional missionary position every time.

But the reality is that there’s a reason the missionary position is so popular. It’s usually the first one everyone tries and – let’s be frank – it’s probably the most comfortable for both men and women. That’s not the case for everyone, of course, but the missionary position usually figures near the top in lists of people’s favourite sexual positions.

The first-ever mention of the missionary position came in sexologist Alfred Kinsey’s famous Kinsey Reports about sexual behaviour in the late 1940s. He called it “the English-American position” but also described how natives of Melanesia in the Pacific Ocean had mocked the missionaries who had arrived to convert them and called their favourite way of having sex “the missionary position”. The name stuck and has been used ever since.

Essentially the missionary position involves a woman lying on her back with her partner lying on top. The position is most common in heterosexual sex but is also adapted for gay sex.

The intimacy of the missionary position certainly explains its appeal. It’s easier to kiss your partner and to maintain eye contact during the act of sex, as well as lots of amazing body contact and skin-on-skin action.

It does have its drawbacks, however, the main one being when the man is much bigger or heavier than the woman. As it’s usually the first position many people experience, it’s also one which some people never vary from and then they wonder why their sex life seems dull.

Exploring sexual positions that work for both of you should be part of a healthy and fulfilling sex life. The missionary position does the job but variety can definitely be the spice of life.

Why the Missionary Position is Still Most Popular for Sex
