You might think you have your sexual health and wellbeing sorted. You know what you like, and you know what you don’t like, so it’s smooth sailing from here on in, right? Wrong. According to sexual wellness expert Marissa Gold, ‘There are two primary phases in most people’s sex lives—the sex you have before you get into a relationship, and the sex you have after.’ And, let’s be honest, the latter phase isn’t the one you brag about to your friends at brunch. As a long-term couple, things change and your sex life needs to change with it, or else you’ll be bored in the bedroom – and no one wants that. Improve your sex life in any relationship by giving these sex tips for couples a try.

1. Role-Play the Opposite of Your Personalities: ‘Is your guy a go-getter who handles everything in your relationship?’ asks Gold. ‘Tie him to the bedpost. Is he on the shy side and lets you call all the shots? Hand him some bondage tape and tell him to take over. Most people like to play a role in bed that’s not what they play in real life.’

2. Do That Thing He’s Always Begging You to Do: Gold points out, ‘Most men are pretty vocal about their sexual fantasies. It’s the male equivalent of our nagging them to pick up their socks. Does your guy really, really want you to dance for him? Try anal sex? Dress up like a French maid, perhaps? Since you’re the only woman he’s allowed to have sex with and all, it’s worth a try!’

3. Try A Position You’ve Never Done Before: Gold explains, ‘Doing new things together is a bonding experience, and let’s be honest—it’s probably been a while since either of you did something new in bed. Just throw out a sex position, or ask him if there’s one he’s never tried, and go for it. Best case? Someone loves it. Worst case? You have a good laugh.’

4. Leave Your Underwear at Home on Date Night: ‘OK, it’s a little cheesy,’ Gold admits. ‘But it’ll make your typical routine of sharing the burrata appetizer at your neighbourhood Italian restaurant a little more fun. As you’re leaving home, as you’re walking in, or as you’re sitting down, just let him know. And wear a body-con dress and heels so he can fantasize about the easy access.’

5. Have Sex When You Don’t Really Feel Like It: ‘Let me be clear,’ Gold cautions. ‘Never do anything you really don’t want to do. However, relationships are about compromise, so if you’re turning him down more than you’re turning him on, you might consider some pro bono (he-he!) sex once in a while. It will go a long way in your relationship, because once a guy feels neglected or rejected, he might stop trying to do all those things you like too.’

6. Treat Him Like a Sex Object Sometimes: Gold notes, ‘What kind of sex do people have during affairs? The kind of sex where clothes get ripped and lamps get broken. A lot of people crave that kind of passion, which we all know is hard to maintain when you’ve slept together literally hundreds of times. So consider it an investment in your monogamy and treat him like the jerky-but-so-hot football player you wanted just one night with in college and take the guy. He’ll like it, promise.’

7. Don’t Forget About Oral: Gold comments, ‘Every woman knows that men love oral sex, and every man knows that at some point in a long-term relationship, he’ll probably stop getting it. In his ideal world, you’ll keep doing it because you want to, so don’t make it seem like a chore (even if you kind of feel like is). P.S. This rule works both ways.’

8. Don’t Wear Frumpy Outfits to Bed Every Night: ‘To a lot of men, the moment you wear sweatpants to bed is the exact moment when the romance officially dies,’ says Gold. ‘This is hard, because you want to wear those comfy sweats as much as he wants to stop doing sit-ups every day. But consider an upgrade to lingerie (or at least retire the baggy T-shirt) every once in a while and watch the magic happen. Bonus: Not only will he love it if you’re a little sexier when you hit the sheets, you might find it puts you in the mood too.’

We all like to get a little bit creative in the bedroom. Sure, the missionary position has it’s place, but whether it’s a special occasion or you just want to spice things up, other positions can take your sexual wellness to a whole new level. That said, if you don’t like certain positions, you can feel like something is wrong with you, but that doesn’t mean you should take your bedroom antics to the extreme. Some positions seem to pose such a threat to your wellbeing – we’re talking broken-penis high-risk here – that they’re just not worth it. Sex shouldn’t feel like you’re in the Hunger Games, so here’s a list of sex positions you can just stop attempting, guilt-free.

1. The Erotic Accordion: Sexual health and wellness writer Rebecca Santiago details, ‘Your lover lies on his back and lifts his knees toward his chest. Facing him, you squat down and straddle his legs so your thighs are hugging his. You are then supposed to somehow figure out a way to get this dude’s penis in contact with your vagina — I assume magnets must be involved? — and rock back and forth, not unlike the way I assume you are rocking back and forth in horror in front of your laptop screen right now. Look, I slammed my own hand in a cab door last week. I routinely walk into door frames. I broke a dish this morning, and I wasn’t even using dishes at the time. I do not have what it takes to make sweet, sweet thigh music with my beloved.’

2. The Girl-On-Top Squat: According to Santiago, ‘This move has sexier monikers, but I’m gonna call it like I see it. Anyway. Many janky online sources will reassure you that squatting over your partner’s penis a) gives him a great view of all your prettiest bits, and b) allows you to control the pace and depth of le bang. Which, sure, it totally does — for the three seconds before your thighs start burning and cramping and give out and you emit a horrible screechy yelp because coital Charlie horse and catapult down on his penis in a way that is either deeply satisfying for him or very, very painful. And there’s really no way to know which way you’re gonna catapult. Have you ever seen someone do a happy wall-sit?’

3. The Pile Driver: Urban Dictionary outlines this feels-as-bad-as-it-sounds move as a ‘sexual position when the woman is leaned on her bed to as where her shoulders are the only thing on the bed, the male can either sit on her or stand up and vertically penetrate the woman’s anus or vagina many times.’ [sic.] Santiago comments, ‘That thing I cannot stand to do in yoga, plus “many times”-worth of penetration. This sounds like a really comfortable and not even remotely dude-serving sex position. It will probably give you eleven orgasms. Just kidding.’

4. The Propeller: ‘The Propeller sex position requires the woman to lie on her back—legs outstretched and together,’ says Santiago. ‘The man lies on top of her but back-to-front so he’s facing her feet. Once he’s got himself inside he can make circular motions with his hips. Whoa there, reverse dude-on-top cowboy. Does this move operate under the pretence that your male partner’s schlong is already broken irrevocably from that time you Tilt-A-Whirl’ed out of your terribly uncomfortable straddle-squat? I have seen some penises in my day, but never one that bent at so disturbing an angle. You may as well call this “boom-boomerang.”’

Cosmopolitan magazine recently published a tie in article, celebrating sexual wellness and wellbeing in conjunction with the Winter Games. Every month, the magazine publishes a page of sex tips, and this month they were all themed around the Olympic theme. Unfortunately, much like the Olympics themselves, they were all positions that only elite athletes should try. To a casual observer, they are shockingly harrowing!

Some think that this Winter Olympics special is far fetched and others think it is amazing, but whatever your point of view, you can’t deny the fact that the sex Olympics special has caused a lot of attention. It is also commendable that Cosmo has become more self aware about their crazy (and much ridiculed) sex tips. It seems that they have decided to ‘own’ this reputation and wear it as a badge of honour. The Winter Olympics special is both hilarious and impractical, with such positions as the ‘Long Pole’, ‘Bawdy Bobsled’ and even ‘Husky Style’. Not to mention all the little accompanying drawings of little people wearing helmets, scarves, goggles and even figure skating uniforms whilst fully engaged in the act of coitus.

The Heavenly Spiral has got to be one of the most terrifying sounding and complicated sexual positions we have ever seen. It looks like the kind of thing that could only work if the woman is about five foot tall and the man is about seven foot tall!

For this position, the magazines advises the reader to have the man enter from behind, while he holds your legs at his sides. The woman should then also reach down and stroke her own clitoris. Other positions also encourage twisting, bending, kneeling, and being upside down. The drawings of people wearing helmets during sex are absolutely hilarious, too.

Trying out a new sexual position can be just the boost that you and your partner need in the bedroom. Keeping things fresh and new between the sheets is also great for your emotional wellness and wellbeing, and maintains a sense of excitement in your relationship, stopping things from becoming stale.

Everyone knows the usual sexual positions – the missionary, girl on top and doggy style ones – but have you ever heard of the pretzel dip? This one encourages contact with the clitoris so can be a very pleasurable one indeed for women.

To try this one, women should lie on their right side, whilst the man kneels, straddling her right leg and curling her left leg around his left side. He should then enter from that position. The great thing about this position is that you get the deep penetration normally associated with doggy style whilst being able to look at one another.

Lots of women also find that doggy style hurts their backs, whereas with this one, they can lounge comfortably on the bed, and can also prompt their guy to get his hands involved in the action too.

Why not also try the flatiron? This one is meant to intensify vaginal pleasure and works by you lying face down on the bed with your hips slightly raised, and the man lying on top of you. In this position, a more snug fit is created, which makes your guy seem larger than he is.

In this position it is also possible for the man to thrust deep enough to touch your cervix, which can be pleasurable for some women. To make sure you protect your back, place a pillow under your lower abs whilst he is penetrating you, and move your hips from side to side to help intensify the action.

If your sex life has hit a bit of a rut, then there is a lot of merit in trying some new moves in the bedroom. Not only will trying new things boost your sexual wellness and wellbeing, but the experience of both working together on increasing your mutual pleasure will bring new intimacy and closeness to your relationship – hopefully with a few mind-blowing orgasms along the way.

When it comes to bringing a couple together, nothing beats a steamy romp in the bedroom. This will naturally translate into intimacy in all other areas of your life and make your relationship stronger than ever.

If you don’t know where to get started, why not try standing up sex in the shower? To do this, face your partner and get him to hold you up, as you wrap one leg around his hip and he enters you. This position makes hitting the G Spot inevitable, increasing the pleasure for you. The fact that he will have to have his arms around you the entire time also makes it feel very close, bonded and imitate. The hot water of the shower also stimulates extra nerve endings and makes it a very sensual experience.

If you like the idea of being face to face the entire time, but standing up is too tricky, why not try lying down face to face on the bed, lying on your sides? Being face to face means you can make eye contact the whole time, and stay in a full body embrace throughout sex, too. Wrap your legs around his waist and then he will be able to enter you, whilst you pull his body closer with your legs and feet.

Another alternative for face to face is to sit on his lap, facing him and have him enter you. This has the added bonus of improving clitoral stimulation and makes him feel like he is getting and extra sexy lap dance.

What do you get when you cross the Kama Sutra with the Olympics? The sexual experience of your lifetime! Try these amazing sex positions and boost your wellness and wellbeing.

To have sex like a swimmer, lie flat on your stomach, legs apart, and put your arms up above your head like you are doing a butterfly stroke. Have your partner lie on top of you, entering you from behind. This gives great access to the g-spot and c-spot, and you can alter your legs, bringing your feet closer together for a tighter fit.

For a more gymnastic approach, lie on your back and bend your knees up towards your head. If you’re feeling super flexible, you can straighten your legs and then bring them behind you so that your toes touch down onto the floor, using your hands to support your back. Then your partner kneels and enters you, allowing for very intense and deep penetration. Your partner can hold onto your hips for extra stability.

If wrestling is more your style, lie down on your side and have your partner do the same, facing one another. Scissor your legs through his for some intimate, up-close action. You can then grind against his pelvis, making slow circular motions with your hips until you reach orgasm.

For an equestrian-inspired sex session, try a twist on the missionary position. Put your right leg over your partner’s right shoulder while he is entering you in the traditional way, and put your other leg down on the mattress. Switch legs when you want to change the sensation. The best thing about this position is that your partner’s hands are free to roam all over your body.

Trying all of these positions will make a fun little sex-Olympics in your own bedroom.

Sexual positions refer to the different ways in which couples position themselves physically during sexual intercourse. Popular myth suggests that the man on top style of sex was the only normal and acceptable position, but there are so many other positions that you may well enjoy even more. Furthermore, people seem to think that the more physically challenging, the better the sexual satisfaction. However, one’s competence during sex is measured by their fulfilment and not necessarily the acrobatics they go through to create a diverse sexual repertoire. The most common positions are man-on-top, woman-on-top, side-by-side and rear entry. Anal intercourse has also become more popular among both heterosexual and gay couples. All of these positions can be modified to be performed lying down, sitting, kneeling or standing, to make them more comfortable for either the man or the woman, or to make them more inventive – whichever you’re looking for.

Missionary position

The man-on-top position is one of the most common of all intercourse positions in Western cultures, and is named after the 19th century Christian missionaries who believed that the man on top was the only natural way for people to have sex. In this position, the woman lies on her back with her legs spread, and the man or woman guides the penis into the vagina. The man either lies fully on the woman or supports himself on his elbows, knees or hands. The woman can either wrap her legs around the man’s hips or back, put them up over his shoulders or leave them extended by his sides. The further up the legs are, the more intense and deep the penetration can be as the man thrusts. It’s a personal choice depending on how deep the woman likes penetration to be. This is a great position for kissing and looking at your partner, as well as leaving the woman’s hands free to touch her partner or stimulate the clitoris.

Woman on top

For this position, the man lies on his back and the woman lowers herself onto his penis. The woman can remain squatting on her knees facing the man, or she can turn around and face his feet. This is a great position for the woman as it gives her control in terms of penetration, speed and the indirect stimulation of the clitoris. Couples can both move their hands freely and it’s also ideal for pregnant women as it means both people can enjoy sex without the woman’s belly getting in the way. However, it’s not the most ideal position if you’re planning on getting pregnant as the semen tends to naturally run back out of the vagina.

Rear entry

Rear entry intercourse occurs when the penis enters the woman’s vagina while she has her back to the man – it isn’t the same as anal intercourse, where the penis is inserted into the rectum. This can be done with the woman standing but bending over and supporting herself, or with the woman on her hands and knees which is commonly referred to as doggy style. This position allows for deep penetration and vigorous thrusting if the couple wants that. It can be a natural advancement from sex standing up or from side-to-side sex, and can be an exciting addition to your sexual repertoire. However, there is a lack of intimacy with this position and there is no clitoral stimulation, so the man or woman needs to manually stimulate this area.

We all love a good make out session, as it often leads to mind-blowing sex. However, you can sometimes forget how important kissing is to your sexual health. Once you’ve moved beyond kissing and onto, ahem, other things, you tend to focus on the more overtly sexual stuff as your goal. Yet kissing is a hotter form of foreplay than you realise, and can work wonders for your sexual wellbeing. Therefore, we’ve spoken to sex therapist Sonia Borg, PhD, author of Marathon Sex: Incredible Lovemaking Experiences Hotter and Longer Than You’ve Ever Done It Before and sexologist Jessica “Dr. Jess” O’Reilly, PhD, founder of sexwithdrjess.com, for their hottest tips for improving your kissing wellness.

1. Play with Your Positions: ‘How you angle your bodies affects the mood of your make-out sesh,’ say Borg and O’Reilly. ‘If you feel like being in charge, sit on his lap and wrap your legs around him so you’re kissing him from above. Want him to take the reins? Stand up so he towers over you (if he’s taller). A hot horizontal option is to kiss him while spooning—push your butt into his pelvis and grind against him.’

2. Sense His Breath: Though it sounds weird out of context, when you’re in the moment and you feel your partner’s breath on your mouth, there’s something very sensual about that. Borg and O’Reilly instruct, ‘Lightly brush your lips against his, letting the sensation of his exhales linger on your skin.’

3. Change Up Your Technique: Borg and O’Reilly note, ‘Changing up your technique builds excitement, so alternate between different mouth moves: Slide your tongue back and forth between his lips or against his gums. Swirl your tongue around his, then take his tongue into your mouth and suck on it the way you would his penis. Gently nibble his lower lip.’

4. Get in Sync: Borg and O’Reilly recommend, ‘For an incredibly soulful kiss, put your hand on your man’s heart and smooch in rhythm with his heartbeat.’

5. Get Your Hands in the Game: ‘Kissing isn’t just about the lips,’ Borg and O’Reilly point out. ‘Get creative with your hands, too. Seductively play with his fingers as though you were giving his digits a hand-job, passionately rub and grab at his inner thighs, or drag your fingers through his scalp and tug on his hair.’

6. Use Everything You’ve Got: Why stop at lips and hands, when you’ve got a whole body that can turn your partner on even more?  ‘Pulsate your groin against his,’ Borg and O’Reilly advise. ‘Try straddling him, undoing a couple of his shirt buttons, and then pressing your breasts against his chest. Or stroke yourself in tandem with your kisses, so he can see you getting aroused.’

7. Don’t Knock Dry-Humping: ‘There’s a reason every teenager in the book does it,’ Borg and O’Reilly argue. ‘Simulating sex (and watching each other get off in the process) makes actually doing it way steamier. While making out, thrust your hips into his, or grind your way up and down his leg.’

8. Pay Attention to His Ears and Eyes: Tell your partner just how badly you want him, and what you’re about to do to him. Even just a moan can make things feel naughtier, but if you’re feeling adventurous, something along the lines of, “I want you to plow inside of me,” is practically guaranteed to make him blow his load. With his eyes, Borg and O’Reilly point out, ‘Couples often neglect to make eye contact while getting it on. It’s the quickest, easiest way to instantly intensify things.’

Yoga is often associated with lithe, young women but they aren’t the only people who can enjoy this form of exercise. Just because you’re not as flexible as you’d like, that’s not to say that there isn’t a form of yoga to suit you. Age and gender play a role in flexibility, but if you’re clever about the type of yoga positions you choose, you may find that you can increase your flexibility with yoga and go on to practice more of this fantastic activity. There are a number of health benefits to yoga, from reducing your stress levels to helping you to sleep better, and increasing your flexibility as well. For each of these positions you should hold the pose for five to ten breaths; seated positions can be held for longer, so long as you feel comfortable. You need to remember to hold a smooth and even breath throughout the poses, and don’t try and hold the position if you don’t feel able to as you may risk injury. As you practice and your flexibility improves, you can begin to hold the poses for longer.

Mountain Pose

The mountain pose may seem simple, but it is the most basic template for all of the other positions. It’s a welcoming way to begin connecting with your breathing pattern and to begin your yoga practice. It is performed by standing tall with your feet together, perhaps with your big toes touching. Close your eyes and let your arms rest by your sides with your fingers together. If standing is too difficult or challenging, you can lay on your back with the soles of your feet pressed up against a wall. You’ll feel as though you’re standing on the floor, but your lower back will still be stretched slightly.

Child’s Pose

An incredibly basic move which you can stay in for a few minutes at a time, this is a resting pose. You begin with your knees and the tops of your feet on the floor, with your feet together and touching. With your knees apart, rest your belly and chest between the legs and place your head on the floor, with your arms stretched out in front of you. You can rest your head on a pillow if it doesn’t reach to the floor with ease.

Downward-Facing Dog

A challenging pose for beginners, this can be made easier by increasing the distance between your feet. With your feet hip-width apart, hinge forward at the waist and press your palms on the ground, with your hips in the air. Keep your hands shoulder-width apart and your arms, shoulders and back in a straight and diagonal line. Your hands should be at the front of your mat and your toes should be facing forward near the back of your mat; at any time, you may take a break in the child’s resting post and then come back into the downward dog position again. Beginners may find it easier to bend their knees to keep the spine long and to take off some of the body weight into the legs.

Chair Pose

A symmetrical pose, meaning both sides of your body will move in and out of the pose at the same time, this heats your body up and increases the strength in your legs. You begin with your feet together or hip-width apart in a standing position. Bend your knees as though you’re sitting in a chair and raise your arms up alongside your ears at the same time. This can be a difficult position to maintain if you’re new to yoga so feel free to move into the mountain pose on alternating breaths, which also makes the pose more dynamic.

Traditional sex positions have a tendency to get old rather quickly, but does that mean you have to go for health-and-wellbeing-threatening karma sutra-style positions just to keep your sexual health and wellness in shape? Luckily, with a few clever tweaks, you can turn classic sex positions into something hot and altogether fantastic. These improved classics are easy to do, and don’t require you to develop acrobatic skills. More importantly, however, these sex positions deliver for both you and your partner, so we definitely recommend that you give them a try.

1. Cowgirl Lap Dance: The cowgirl position is pretty great in its classic form, but adding a chair to the mix takes it to a whole new level of hotness. The man should sit on a kitchen chair, pull the woman close and help her slide onto his lap. Women, make sure your feet touch the floor, as this will enable you to rotate your hips and tease his erection with your clitoris – which makes for a very sexy precursor to intercourse. When you’re ready for intercourse, sitting on his lap in this way will also give you better control than the traditional cowgirl position does, meaning that you can make this ride twice as wild and twice as good.

2. Doggy Leg Lift: Doggie-style is a classic that many couples enjoy, but if you’re looking to add a little something extra, a leg lift is definitely the way to go. The woman should bend over on the bed with her legs spread, and the man should lift one of her thighs. This will allow for the deepest penetration possible. Men, twist your body toward hers and drape her thigh across your hip while you thrust. You can either use your free hand to stimulate her clitoris or, if she’s into it, slip your hand into her hair for a gentle tug.

3. Missionary with Pillows: With the simple addition of a pillow, the somewhat “vanilla” missionary position can lead to mind-blowing sex. Not only is this  sex position with a twist incredibly easy; it virtually guarantees orgasm – possibly for both of you at the same time. Women, lie down on your back and slide a pillow under your backside. Your thighs should be spread apart and your feet should be flat against the mattress. This enables your partner to penetrate you from an angle that’s deeper than ever before, and bring about unavoidable clitoral stimulation will make your orgasm deliciously intense.

4. Spoon Split: For many women, this sex position with a twist is a real favourite as it is both highly intimate and very naughty. While in a traditional spooning position, drape your top leg across his. This will force your thighs into a fairly widespread position, which – even if you’re traditionally quite shy in the bedroom department – can make you feel like a sexual nymph. This position also enables your partner to thrust deeply while also having very easy access to your clitoris.

5. Reverse Cowgirl Squat: Facing the bed’s headboard, the man should get on his knees and rest his bums on his heels. Then, the woman should squat over his lap while grasping the headboard, as this will enable leverage as she lowers herself onto his erection. Men, grip the curve of her waist as she rides you so that she will be better able to balance during sex. In this position, a bit of gentle hair tugging and mild spanking are also generally appreciated, and easily accomplished, just make sure your partner is on board!

You think that conceiving a baby is going to be easy; after all, enough happy accidents occur these days that you should get knocked up as soon as you go off the pill, right? In actual fact, fertility is a big sexual health issue, not because it’s all-too easy to conceive, but actually because we humans are worse of in terms of fertility wellness than we think. According to Medica IVF’s Dr David Knight, ‘If you are between 18 and 34 and you and your partner are generally healthy, doctors say more often than not some simple problems – with easy fixes –may be standing in your way.’ Unfortunately, myths and old wives tales can get in the way of you falling pregnant, as well as your sense of wellbeing when you don’t conceive, so let’s take a look at the facts about fertility:

1. When to have sex: You don’t necessarily need to have sex on the day you ovulate. In fact, this may decrease your chances of conceiving as waiting until ovulation means you bypass your most fertile time. Once you’ve ovulated, your egg is only viable for the next 24 hours. Moreover, sperm can live in your reproductive tract for 3-4 days, so having sex two to three times a week means that when you do ovulate there will be sperm waiting! Dr Knight notes, ‘I tell my patients to have regular intercourse, meaning two to three times a week generally starting after your period stops. Specifically I encourage couples NOT to monitor ovulation or use temperature graphs.’

2. It’s never too much: When you’re trying to conceive, don’t worry about having too much sex. Research has shown that having sex every day makes you slightly more likely to conceive than if you had sex every other day – it’s simple maths really. However, don’t put sex on a schedule, as experts warn that this can actually lower your chances of conception. Data suggests that love making on a schedule has a negative effect on your hormones.

3. How position affects conception: Most people believe that the position you use affect conception. The theory goes that lying on your back for 20 minutes after having sex ensures that the sperm stays in the neck of your uterus for longer. However, regardless of the position you take, if you have sex sufficient sperm are deposited in the neck of the womb and are able to begin their journey towards the egg. Position is irrelevant, as is staying on your back.

4. Saving up sperm doesn’t improve potency: The testicles produce millions of sperm every day, which are stored in a tiny sac at the top of each testicle known as the epididymis. Abstaining from sex in order to accumulate a giant sperm load will not up your chances of conception. In fact, storing up sperm may mean the old stuff is of an inferior quality and may even hinder the newly produced, healthier sperm from reaching the egg.

5. Lubricant does more harm than good: You might try lube to help sperm slip, slide and get inside but not only is this ineffectual, it could actually prevent you from getting pregnant. Dr Knight explains that most lubricants change the pH or acid balance inside the vagina, which can affect the motility of sperm and ultimately prevent or reduce your chances of conception. If you still find you need to use a lubricant, avoid petroleum jelly like the plague. Instead, use natural vegetable products, such as olive oil, as these are far less likely to cause any serious problems for the sperm.

Trying new position doesn’t just help to spice things up; it can fix your sexual health and wellness problems. Whether you have confidence issues, pain or you’re ready to get pregnant, there’s an ideal position for any goal. Get ready to meet the positions that will boost your wellbeing, and get you the outcome you want.

1. Making Babies: While all kinds of sexual positions can lead to pregnancy, sex coach and certified sexuality educator Amy Levine, founder of SexEdSolutions.com, recommends the missionary position with a pelvic tilt. ‘Putting a pillow under the tush can help elevate your pelvis, and create a slide effect—providing an easy path for his swimmers to make their way through your cervix on their journey to your ovum,’ she explains. ‘Typically, women who try this tend to maximize the ejaculation, since it stays in their body a little longer compared to positions in which you’re upright, allowing the semen to drip out of the vagina.’

2. Building Confidence: You on top. These are the three words that Debby Herbenick, PhD, author of Because It Feels Good: A Woman’s Guide to Sexual Pleasure and Satisfaction, says that every women needs to memorise in order to feel more confident and in control. ‘It can be confidence-building because it physically helps women to be in control,’ she notes. ‘Make sure to do it your way, though. Woman on top can be done kneeling, squatting, facing forward or facing backward, so show off whatever you or he loves most about your body.’

3. Having Orgasms: You might not have heard of the coital alignment technique, but it’s an absolute must-try for female pleasure. According to Dr. Herbenick, ‘This is a wonderful variation on missionary and one of the few sex positions that has ever been researched and found to be helpful for women who would like to orgasm during sex. It involves the guy sliding himself forward, with his shoulders past yours, and your pelvic areas grinding and not thrusting so much. This targets more stimulation on a woman’s clitoris, making it easier for some women to feel pleasure and possibly orgasm.’

4. Lasting Longer: Levine advises men who want to increase their staying power to try the missionary position with the man on top. ‘It can work for him if he has trouble going the distance,’ she comments. ‘The key is that he’s in an easy position to stop and start when his arousal is increasing at a fast rate, and can take it down a notch so he can last longer.’ Ava Cadell, a sex educator and founder of Loveology University in Los Angeles, adds, ‘The “fox” position is a variation of missionary, in which the woman’s legs go all the way up and over her lover’s shoulders. Penetration of the vagina is very deep in this position. She is contained in the boundaries of his body and he can dive totally inside her, maintaining his arousal and lasting longer.’

5. Relieving Pain: Dr Herbenick outlines two ideas for fixing intercourse-related pain. The first is to use lots of water-based lubricant, and the second is to keep the reins in your hands, and get on top. This position ‘gives the woman more control over taking sex at a pace that is comfortable for her,’ Dr Herbenick clarifies. If your pain is because your man is too well-endowed, try Dr Herbenick’s solution: ‘The guy lies on his side; she lies perpendicular to him with legs spread as they rest over his body. This allows her to hold the base of his shaft if she wants to limit his range of motion, and allows her to use pelvic rocks to create an in-and-out sensation.’

If your well-being has been affected by a heart attack, you may be too embarrassed to inquire about your sexual health. But when is it OK to have sex again? And what’s the safest way to go about it? Now, new guidelines, published in the journals Circulation and European Heart Journal, are urging doctors to help their patients resume a healthy love life, and provide – for the first time – specific advice on enjoying sex safely after a heart attack, stroke, heart transplant or other heart condition.

This isn’t the first time that guidelines have discussed how long you should wait before getting back between the sheets, the new advice details exactly which sexual positions and activities you can engage in if you aren’t ready for the physical exertion of intercourse. According to Elaine Steinke, lead author of the statement and professor of nursing at Wichita State University in Kansas, ‘Patients are anxious and often afraid sex will trigger another cardiac event – but the topic sometimes gets passed over because of embarrassment or discomfort.’

The paper also recommends that you undergo some type of sex counseling, and discuss with your doctor the health risks of embarking on an affair. As having an affair has been shown to increase the risk of dying from heart problems, the guidelines urge doctors not to be embarrassed about fully discussing the issue. Professor Steinke commented, ‘We deal with the intimate parts of the body in many ways as health care providers. Those who want information are very much relieved that the health care provider has brought up this topic.’

If you’ve had no complications after your heart attack, and can walk briskly without experiencing chest pain or other symptoms, the guidelines state that you can typically engage in sexual activity after one week. However, if you’ve undergone heart bypass surgery, you need to wait for your incision to heal fully, and can generally safely resume sexual activity after six to eight weeks. This should be done gradually, and you might want to consider more PG stuff before you move onto the main event, Professor Steinke advised.

Here at Yourwellness, we recently reported on a study which showed that the way that you and your partner sleep says something about you as a couple. Relationship psychologist Corrine Sweet explained that sleeping habits can reveal stresses and strains in a relationship. ‘During sleep, you cannot fake your body language,’ she said. ‘This is the time when you are honest, vulnerable and your sleeping position can reveal a lot about your relationship.’ The survey revealed that over half of adults believe they could tell if their partner was cheating on them, just by their partner’s sleeping position.

However, another sleep wellness expert has now suggested another reason why you may want to think about your sleeping position of choice. According to Dr. Michael J. Breus, who appeared on US health show The Doctors, some sleeping positions may be better for your body than others, and so it’s your own wellbeing – rather than your emotional health or relationship wellness – that determines how you get your forty winks.

On The Doctors, Dr Breus revealed that grabbing some shut-eye when you’re in the wrong position could be causing unnecessary strain across your back and neck. Dr Breus explained, ‘Sleeping on your back is usually the best sleep position. It disperses your weight over your entire frame.’ He continued by saying that, if your weight is distributed evenly, you can ease this muscular pain and reduce the strain that you may otherwise put on your body.

So that’s the best position for your body, but what about the worst? Surely, sleeping on your stomach would be similar to sleeping on your back – it’s just the same, only upside down, right? In fact, Dr Breus warned that sleeping on your stomach is the worst position for your body. He says, ‘The biggest problem is that you have to turn your entire head almost 90 degrees and that causes tremendous strain across your neck.’

Dr Breus concluded that the best sleeping position can vary from person to person, and he recommends individual consultations to see what is best. However, if you’re thinking that, once you’re out for the count, there’s little you can do about your sleeping habits, don’t worry; there are other things that affect your body at night which you can control. Dr Breus noted that an older mattress that sags or an over-stuffed pillow can cause even further problems, so make sure you get a good night’s sleep by ensuring your bed is worthy of one.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a very common problem today in women who are at a reproductive age. At least 5 to 10 per cent of the young women (as suggested by the National Institutes of Health research) are now diagnosed with the condition. But there is good news, as now many have started to acknowledge the role of yoga as a safe treatment option.

The science of yoga works at levels which are far more subtle and deeper than merely at the physical body level. It is well known that yoga helps release deeply stored stress in the system, which can help improve PCOS symptoms. Asanas (the name given for specific yoga postures) designed for PCOS can help to open up the pelvic area and promote relaxation and pranayamas (the name for the breathing exercises) are powerful techniques that should help to calm the mind. Coupled with these useful aspects there are some soothing meditations that allows you to feel more relaxed at a very deep level and help detoxify and de-stress the entire system.

The Butterfly Pose is one specifically that can be very helpful when trying to deal with PCOS. Don’t flap your legs too much; instead try to hold the posture for as long as possible. Even more helpful is the challengingly-named Supta Badhakonasana (or Reclining Butterfly Pose), which works just like the Butterfly Pose, but lying down instead.

This is what makes it extremely relaxing. To enhance the experience, be sure to play some light music and place cushions under your hip for ease and comfort. For beginners, it may be a good idea to use cushion support while doing this posture.
