After more than 20 years, Stanford professor and economist Paul Oyer found himself back on the dating scene and turned to dating sites, finding that searching for a romantic partner online was remarkably similar to something he’d been studying all his life: economics. But how are financial wellness and sexual health linked? Oyer, who is now happily in a relationship with a woman he met on JDate, has written a whole book on the subject, entitled Everything I Ever Needed to Know About Economics I Learned From Online Dating, and sat down with wellness writer Christina Chaey to discuss economics-related dating tips.

1. Know What You Want: Chaey notes, ‘People end up on online dating sites for a variety of reasons — some are looking for casual hook-ups with multiple people, while others are seeking monogamous, long-term love. Knowing what you’re looking for will help inform the way you describe yourself to others.’ Oyer advises, ‘If you want to show that you’re serious and you’re ready to settle down, you should consider having one or two pictures that show that.’

2. Be Wary of Those Who Have Been on the Site for a While: According to Oyer, ‘If someone’s on a dating site for a long time, that’s a problem.’ If you discovered a house had been for sale for a long time in a pretty active housing market, wouldn’t that raise a red flag in your mind? After all, what’s wrong with this house that no one wants it?! Oyer explains, ‘By the same token, if a person’s been on a dating site for a long time, or has never had a serious relationship, there’s some hidden information that you want to be wary of.’

3. Online Dating Should be the Same as Job Hunting: Chaey points out, ‘Finding the right partners, of course, is nothing like buying a house — the house you like doesn’t have to like you back in order for things to work out…Looking for a partner online is a lot like shopping around for a new job, in that you’ll always be wondering if you could do a little better. But whether it’s a new job or a partner, you can’t keep searching forever, otherwise you’d be unemployed or lonely forever.’

4. Keep an Open Mind: Oyer’s now-girlfriend is the proud owner of two pugs, and Oyer admits, ‘I hate little dogs, and I had this association that anyone who would like little dogs is not the type of person I would want.’ However, if he had written her off just for that, he wouldn’t now be dating her, so don’t let the little things get in your way.

5. But Know Your Deal-Breakers: ‘The children and the dog were parts of my life I wasn’t willing to give up, and a relationship that didn’t work those in was going to be a problem,’ Oyer recalls. Chaey adds, ‘It’s best to know what you’re definitely not going to change about yourself, like your political beliefs, to be with someone else.’

6. Offer Up More Information: Chaey details, ‘There are two major problems with presenting information about yourself on online dating sites. The first is that people lie about themselves all the time — an infamous OkCupid blog post outlines the big ways people fudge their personal details, including how guys often say they’re two inches taller than they are in real life. The second, related problem is that people tend to make negative assumptions if you don’t explicitly offer up a certain piece of information about yourself in your profile, like your body type, or your income.’

Lung disease, whatever form it takes, is an insidious condition. Diseases which affect the lungs take a long time to manifest, then take an equally long time to make a person very ill. With the exception of obvious causes like smoking, most people aren’t even aware they’re inhaling toxins into their lungs. The best way to protect yourself from lung disease is to be educated about the causes of lung disease and what you can do to avoid them:

1. Smoking

This is easy. The damage smoking causes to the lungs (among other organs) has been well-documented and discussed for ages. Fortunately for those who smoke, the damage can be almost completely undone after quitting. For smokers, ten years without tobacco usually reduces the risk of lung cancer to that of a non-smoker.

2. Black Mold and Other Airborne Pathogens

Black mold is a common household annoyance. If the infestation is light, a homeowner can remove the black mold themselves. If it’s heavy, a professional might need to be called in. In the worst cases, the house may become uninhabitable. This is what happened to many houses after Hurricane Sandy. Adam Robertson, a specialist from The Cleaner Image Dryer Vent Services, says that while most black mold and airborne pathogens can be removed with routine housecleaning, certain pathogens require special venting of the infested home’s vents.

3. Radon

Radon is a tasteless, odorless and colorless gas which is a byproduct of the breakdown of uranium. Radon can seep up from the ground into a crawlspace or basement and, from there, leak into the house. A homeowner who believes they have a radon problem should have the home tested. If the radon is above a certain level, it can be removed by a professional radon abatement service. But, if radon levels are fairly low, sometimes all it takes is giving the house a good airing out by opening doors and windows and turning on fans.

4. Asbestos

Exposure to asbestos can lead to a rare cancer of the lining of the lungs called mesothelioma. It can also lead to asbestosis, a slightly less serious lung disease. Asbestos was banned as a building material in the United States in the 1980s, but some older homes may still contain asbestos. It can be found in paint, insulation, roof shingles or flooring. It’s harmless as long as it’s undisturbed, but a homeowner who wants to do a renovation and suspects they may have asbestos in the home should call in an asbestos professional first.

5. The Flu

The flu, though often seen as only slightly worse than the common cold, has the potential to damage a person’s lungs permanently. Seniors, children, and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk of developing lung disease from the flu virus. Those in the at-risk groups should be sure to get a yearly flu shot to minimize their chances of catching the flu.

These five causes can wreak havoc on a person’s body, inflicting permanent damage and putting them at risk of lung disease. All of these causes, however, can be avoided or corrected through precautionary action and professional assistance.

When you think about exercising, you may have certain concerns about your wellbeing. Sure, exercise is good for your wellness, but what about the pain involved, or the risk of potential injuries? You’ve heard the phrase “no pain, no gain” but does fitness really have to hurt? Not according to Julie Isphording, former Olympian for the US, who notes that there are still gains to be made without workout pain.

Isphording comments, ‘For a long time I thought that being in pain was part of the plan, a sign of progress. I was so used to hobbling around on achy feet, with leg muscles so sore that I couldn’t walk up and down stairs without holding on to the banister for dear life. Pain was a persistent part of my life. Getting out of the car took at least five minutes. I couldn’t keep up with my 62-year-old mother on a little walk. I would push myself through races and run at least 100 miles a week training for the Olympics and the New York City marathon… even the Thanksgiving Day 10K. I ran well. I ran fast. But THE PAIN was always there. I learned to live with it. But I have finally learned after 23 years of running that you just can’t conquer pain. You only delay the inevitable. Once the pain takes over – once you wave the white flag – all your courage, determinations, talent and tenacity will not carry you one more step.’

So what was Isphording’s solution? Calm and gentle workouts. ‘A dynamic group of alternative fitness workouts like yoga, Pilates, and Tai chi-are now in health clubs, gyms and on home videos,’ Isphording points out. ‘Their approach to fitness emphasizes flexibility, balance and breathing. The idea is to “think” through your moves – slowly, effectively and gracefully – not just to get a better butt, but to integrate a balanced approach to fitness that helps you to relieve stress and bring more calmness to your life. That’s great – I am all for less stress. But where is the “workout” part? I’m a runner – I’m used to intensity. Can you get an effective, enhancing body workout too? Absolutely.’ Let’s take a closer look at the gains you expect to make from an intense workout, and see whether or not gentle workouts can provide the same benefits.

1. Endurance: Isphording enthuses that gentle workouts can still provide the endurance you’re looking for. ‘The movements involve lots of reps and holding one position for a long time,’ says Isphording. ‘This prolonged practice will train your muscles to keep working for an extended period of time.’
2. Strength: While gentle workouts tick the “yes” box for endurance, when it comes to strength you have more of a “maybe” on your hands. Isphording explains, ‘If the resistance is progressive – either with bands, weights, or body-weight resistance – than yes, you will build strength. However, most of these type routines do not involve weights that challenge your muscles to the point where they are strengthened.’

3. Flexibility: ‘Consistent stretching of various muscles will improve your flexibility,’ Isphording asserts. ‘Most of these type workouts involve very focused stretching routines with lots of breathing exercises to enhance the movements. However, the key to flexibility is consistency. Muscles need to be properly warmed up and stretched regularly to maintain and enhance a joint’s range of motion.’

4. Weight loss: The weight loss benefits of gentle workouts are questionable. Isphording argues, ‘Most of these workouts do not provide enough exertion to get your heart rate up and therefore burn a lot of calories. So they are not the best fat burners out there. However, with any focused movement you are burning calories.’

Miscarriages are incredibly painful experiences. Trying to cope with the loss of your unborn child is a difficult time, with emotions ranging from resentment and guilt to shame, anger and sadness. Women often feel responsible and worthless when they miscarry, as well as experiencing the secondary losses of the life you’d planned and the family you’d hoped to build. It can change your ideas on your identity and femininity, and you may feel lonely and isolated. Though it may be offered in abundance, you’ll no doubt feel absent from your partner, feeling as though their grief isn’t the same as your own. Here are some of the best ways to grieve your loss and cope with the reality of your miscarriage.

Recognise that you are mourning

The first step to mourning is to realise that that’s exactly what you’re doing. The bereavement process applies here, so you need to give yourself time to process the emotions you’re feeling and accept them. There is no set time period for doing this – it’s whatever feels right for you. People grieve differently and in different time periods. Let your feelings out, and don’t feel ashamed of them – this is a difficult time, and people will appreciate that. You have every right to cry, mourn and feel sadness. Some women find it helpful to keep a souvenir of their baby, in the form of an angelic statue or pendant to remember them by – others plant a tree or special plant in the garden.

Realise that your thoughts and emotions are normal

There are several emotions which are often attributed to this mourning period, which include denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Miscarriage can often leave people feeling cheated and angry, as something that they’d hoped for and felt strong emotions for was taken away from them without warning. With denial, you quite simply don’t want to accept the reality of the situation. This stage is usually accompanied by strong emotions – this is a devastating time, especially if you’ve been trying for a long time to get pregnant. Anger is another common emotion, spurred on by the fact that you’re angry at so many aspects of the situation – yourself, the reality, doctors and your partner. If you’re a religious person, you may find yourself bargaining with fate or God – what this stage means is that you want what happened to your and your partner to be a mistake or a dream. You may offer god your prayers, charity or a more devoted faith in return for the situation to be a mistake. Depression, understandably, is a difficult stage but one which is experienced by many people. This can be easy to get stuck in for a long time, particularly if you’ve struggled to have a baby for a long time. However, it is a good sign that you’re moving through the stages of grief as you should. Finally, acceptance allows you to move past the pain and accept the reality. This is a place of peace where you can begin to resume normality in your life. It doesn’t remove the sadness or loss, but does mean that you’ve accepted you can’t change what has happened to you.

Avoid belittling your loss

Miscarriages aren’t commonly recognised in society, so there is no set way of dealing with this form of loss. People may not know how to react to the news, or how to speak to you, because of this. However, you should realise that you did suffer a loss, regardless of what people say. Though the loss is large and devastating, you shouldn’t blame anyone or yourself for the situation. This will only cause harm to you and others around you.

We all want to find that special someone and fall in love, but staying that way for years to come can sometimes be more difficult that we first imagined. It’s natural for some of the excitement and romance to dissipate a little when you’ve been with someone a long time, but making the effort to retain a little of that honeymoon period magic could be the difference between an average relationship and an incredibly rewarding and happy one. If your relationship is going to grow, you need to nurture it and give it the attention it deserves. You need to focus on your partner, but also on what you want out of your relationship. Spend some time thinking about how you want this partnership to progress, what you need out of it in order to feel fulfilled, and how you expect you and your partner to achieve this in everyday life. Often we only have time to get the bare bones of our schedules done, but a happy relationship is important and the required time won’t have been wasted if you really give your love life the attention it needs.

It sometimes can occur that you’ve gone a long time without any intimacy without you even realising it, where neither partner makes an effort or realises that anything is even different to how it was when you first started dating. What many therapists and relationship counsellors see is that both partners sweep a lot of unresolved issues under the rug, then wonder why they aren’t as happy as they once were. As with any relationship, communication really is key – you need to be honest and open about how you feel in order to be happy. Consider your relationship like a plant – plants need air and water to grow and become strong. Your union with your partner is no different – you need to give it space and nourishment in order to see results. Try devising a weekly date night where you can enjoy a little romance and fun together. Make time in both of your schedules for one night a week where you ignore the emails and laundry and just be together. It’s important that this happens regularly and that you both make the effort here. The consistency will build trust and a connection which really is the heart of a happy relationship.

Another thing you can do it to develop a sense of security by showing your affection in a variety of ways – this may be a surprise visit to their workplace to see them on their lunch break, a warm hug when they come home from work, or simply a complement. These things are small but they often go amiss when you’ve been with someone a long time. Likewise, establish a meaningful connection with them by being honest and open about who you are and what you want from life. Watch your tone when you’re speaking to your partner and how you speak to them – remember that they aren’t just someone you’re talking to at work or in the supermarket. They deserve attention and affection in ways that should be separate from your everyday communication. Changing your relationship may be difficult at times, but with the right amount of effort and nurturing in the right places, it can be well worth it. Even the most secure relationships require work, so you’ll be in good company and hopefully happy for many years to come.

Kim Kardashian had always been famous for her impressive figure and it has been something she has managed to maintain through her celebrity lifestyle. So when she became a mother there was some talk about whether she would be able to return to her trim body shape of the past or whether she would hold on to the pregnancy weight for a long time. But we didn’t have to wonder long, as it was revealed not long after she had given birth that she had been able to drop 25 pounds thanks to the Atkins Diet.

It seems that she has been able to drop the weight by following this high protein diet that puts an emphasis on eating vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, as well as lean meats like chicken and turkey and getting important nutritional fats from sources such as avocado and nuts. The Atkins diet is one of the more famous methods of weight loss and it has been popular for a long time. It emphasises eating virtually no carbohydrates and filling up instead on foodstuffs that are very high in protein. But is this a safe way to lose weight, and has Kim Kardashian done the right thing in her plan for weight loss?

There was a certain level of controversy surrounding her use of the Atkins diet because she was sponsored to use the Atkins diet for her weight loss. This might suggest that she had foregone alternative, and perhaps healthier, ways to losing weight in order to receive the money for the sponsorship of Atkins. This seemed like a worrying step for people to be taking as it promotes putting money before the good of your health. However, Kardashian did indeed manage to lose the weight and supposedly was very happy with the results of the Atkins diet, so if it was effective and did the job she wanted, perhaps there does not need to be such criticism.

According to the experts at Atkins Nutrionals, Kardashian would have been generally eating a breakfast of either an omelette or Greek yoghurt. This would be followed by a snack of either fresh vegetables and a dip or an ounce or two of nuts. Lunch and dinner would be similar meals – generally full of lean meats, vegetables and a dressing. It was the object of the exercise to pace the weight loss and not to try to lose too much too quickly. She was on a diet of around 1,800 to 2,000 calories per day including a small amount of carbohydrates.

Many people criticise the Atkins diet because it places such an emphasis on meat. This means that it is both very high in fat and protein. The problem is that these are known to make you more likely to have problems with your heart or other issues. However, the people at Atkins contend that there are problems with any diet and that if you can ensure that you mainly eat lean meats and healthy proteins this can reduce a lot of the risks.

The diet may have helped Kim Kardashian lose the weight, but she had the help of specific doctors and well regarded nutritionists. Most people cannot afford or would not know how to get this kind of help with their weight loss. While the Atkins diet clearly can be a healthy and effective way of losing weight, it should not be relied upon as there are clearly certain risks that come with it. It might be best to stick with more traditional and standard ways of weight loss.

Through books, movies and word of mouth, we are conditioned to believe that for a sexual experience to be fulfilling, it has to last a long time. This idea can actually be damaging to your wellbeing and wellness, through self-esteem, as you feel that if your sex sessions aren’t lasting for hours then something is missing from your relationship. Men can also feel huge pressure to make sure that things don’t end too quickly, when in reality they should be allowed to ‘let go’ some time.

All over the media, the idea that everyone wants sex to last all night is perpetuated, and yet this is actually contrary to research, which indicates that over 40 percent of women have faked an orgasm in the past, purely to ‘get it over with’. The best sex is really not the sex that goes on for as long as possible, and it in no way reflects the ultimate expression of sexual intimacy or lovemaking.

Men fear that their masculinity will be measured against how long they can last in bed. They feel that if they can keep going for ages it will prove his sexual prowess and satisfy his partner.

In reality, it doesn’t matter how long sex lasts, really, it’s all about quality and not quantity. If men are not doing the right things in the right places then it doesn’t matter how long it lasts, it will be uncomfortable or just plain boring for their partner. Intercourse is only pleasurable for a woman if she has adequate clitoral stimulation, and if this does not happen then it does not matter how long the act goes on for, it will still not be a pleasurable experience for her.

Most of the nerve endings are actually on the outer area of the vagina, not the inner area, so the idea that prolonged penetrative sex is more pleasurable is completely misleading.

Diwali is just around the corner, which means so too are the sweets, late mornings and days off from work. However, despite all the planning, the only thing which seems to be avoided in the schedules is how to keep fit and healthy. This is particularly the case in people who have spent a long time trying to lose weight and then simply give in to temptation. It may seem like spending a few days indulging won’t do you any harm, but if you’re new to exercise and have spent less than six months working on a routine, you could be at a high risk of dropping off the fitness radar for a long time afterwards – all for the sake of one event. There are ways to stay fit during the celebrations, without it cutting into every moment of fun and relaxation with your loved ones. For example, you could indulge in the foods that you particularly enjoy during Diwali rather than consuming everything on offer. There are so many foods on offer, such as street food, cakes and sweets, that it can be difficult to avoid them. But try to stick to the essentials and carry on with your healthy eating plan other than that, with just your basic three nutritious meals a day.

Even some festival foods have healthy options, so scan the table and stock up on those options which provide a lower fat content and plenty of nutrients. For example, avoiding fried foods is a good start and the same can be said of anything laden with sugar. Rice-based dishes which have plenty of vegetables in them would be your best bet, as these will be lower in fat but have enough vitamins and minerals to make them good for your healthy eating plan. Try to make the selection of foods available as healthy as you can, including whole grains, lean proteins such as eggs, chicken and fish, and dried fruits. Dairy is great for protein, as long as it’s low in fat and sugar, and plenty of water. And, as with any healthy eating plan, stock up on fruits and vegetables.

So what about exercise? Well, celebrations are notoriously about relaxing and indulging, so chances are you haven’t spent much time thinking about your gym sessions. But making the effort to stay healthy and fit during this time will help ensure that once Diwali is done for the year, you aren’t way behind on your plan. Try to keep fit where possible and sneak in a few gym classes or a run around the block of an afternoon will keep you in check for the coming months. The best thing to do is to plan your Diwali week in advance and ensure that there are at least three mornings out of six that you don’t need to be late, because the previous nights will end early. Set out these mornings as home workout sessions, and plan them with your trainer if possible. If you don’t have a trainer, try to be as regimented and disciplined as possible. Be sure to warm up and cool down before and after, so that you can avoid injury where possible, as this will slow up your regime for many months after. It’s all in the planning with big festivities, so as long as you’ve pre-planned it all you should be able to maintain your healthy lifestyle and still have a great time.

Everyone longs to retain the early stages of a relationship, where everything is exciting and passionate. It’s natural for some of that excitement to dissipate when you’ve been together for a long time, but you don’t have to wave goodbye to all of the passion – there are ways to ensure that the spark you once enjoyed so much stays put well into your relationship. Staying sexy is the first trick to keeping the spark alive in your relationship, as this is key to retaining the romance. It’s easy to fall into the trap of getting too comfortable with your partner and giving up on things you did when you were first together, but don’t forget these – these are things which will ensure you don’t lose the passion. Try leaving your partner a love note for them to find during the day or when they get home – it’s a quick and easy way to remind your lover that you are thinking of them. You could either write them a note for them to find in their coat pocket, or leave them a steamy message on the bathroom mirror.  You don’t have to become a poet overnight for this trick to work – a simple “I can’t wait to see you tonight” or “Thinking of you” can prove to be very effective. Along these lines, why not surprise your partner with a romantic dinner. Opt out of the ritual Friday night takeaway and make something a little more special – light some candles, put some wine on to chill and enjoy some time together.

Fancy making an effort with your underwear? You could offer your lover a sexy lingerie fashion show, either in one night or a sneaky preview of each outfit throughout the week. There’s nothing better than seeing your partner in a skimpy, sexy outfit and this can be a fun way to spark some passion into your love life. Don’t wait for a special occasion to do something special for your loved one, though – surprising them is the best way to make them feel special and thought of. Why not make them their special meal one evening when they’re least expecting it or surprise them with a small but thoughtful gift.  If you’d rather surprise them with something a little sexier, there are plenty of toys and sexual enhancers on the market which can really ignite the passion into your sex life.

Your attitude towards sex and your relationship may be what needs to shift though. You need to start thinking about your relationship as a third party – you, your partner and your relationship all need to participate in order for you to be healthy. This means taking time to slow down and spend time together, without your kids and without talk of bills or work. Spend time together without being sexual and just be. These moments ensure that your relationship stays a happy one, and that you don’t get bogged down with the mundane aspects of a life together. This may be in the form of a date night once a week to keep the romance alive, making time to say goodbye or greet each other when you get home from work. These things may seem small and insignificant, but they make all the difference when you’ve been with someone a long time. Making the effort will mean the difference between losing the passion early and keeping that spark alive for years to come.

Often people know what they need to do and how they need to do it – it’s just getting the motivation that can be the problem. Finding a way to improve your motivation can be highly beneficial for your wellness and wellbeing, however, as the mental clarity that you gain from completing a task that has been sitting on the edge of your mind for a long time can be a huge relief. The saying ‘tidy house, tidy mind’ really rings true, for example!

Many people make the mistake of sitting around waiting for someone or something to motivate them, but the truth is that they are going to be waiting for a very long time! The truth is, that motivation almost never occurs before a job starts. The period before undertaking a large task is not a very motivating time – you are actually more likely to feel motivated when you have started getting your teeth into a task and have a clear idea of how it is going to pan out. The start of a task is more a time of nervousness as you can feel inhibited to start because you are unsure about how something is going to work out.

Once you take action and get started on a project, the creative energy and motivation are more likely to kick in and help you do the task to the best of your ability. Therefore, one way to get motivation is to stop waiting for it to strike and to get stuck into the task!

Remember, too, that you are in control of the way you feel. If you tell yourself that you feel unmotivated, you may well talk yourself into being unmotivated (and, therefore, unproductive). You are in full control of your own motivation, and should be aware that you have to work hard to make yourself feel motivated rather than waiting for some imaginary spark to strike you.

When getting rid of anything unpleasant, you usually have to get rid of something pleasant first. Much of the makeup we use today is unsatisfactory for a lot of women because of the contents that compose it—paraben, gluten, soy, etc.

These contents can cause various amounts of issues for our bodies.

Gluten is the first issue, and a lot of the leading makeup companies have gluten in their product, as it has been one of the main components in makeup for a long time. This probably would not be that big of an issue, but those with celiac disease can’t intake gluten, and that’s up to ten percent of people.

That’s a sizable portion of users not being able to use makeup, which is a shame, doubly so if they decide to use the makeup regardless as it can lead to serious health issues.

Gluten in makeup, along with other gluten products can damage a person’s digestive system. Those with celiac disease cannot digest the protein composites and it can cause severe damage to the inner lining of the small intestines.

Paraben is a slightly different issue however. For a long time, paraben has been used as a preservative for personal care products. The idea was that paraben is good for you because it keeps the personal care items fresh. Yet, it is these preservatives that are appearing to be a threat to people’s health.

Though it is not indefinite, researchers are becoming more and more certain that paraben can lead to cancer due to the fact its chemicals can be absorbed directly into the skin. So far, no evidence exists in showing that it is a cause of cancer. However, parabens were easily detected among cancerous cells.

Now we can move onto soy. Soy is not entirely bad in its purest form and in moderation, but too much of it can cause several health issues.

What sucks is that it is more than easy to get an excessive amount of impure soy in your diet and through your makeup. One source calls this kind of soy GMO soy. GMO soy is processed soy, which is why it has been called “a ghost of a nutrition food.”

It is a cheap form of protein for processed foods, and when we put excessive amounts of this in our bodies (which is not hard to do as it is in so much of the food we eat as well as in our makeup) we can actually OD on it! Ultimately, too much soy can lead to issues with how your body absorbs minerals.

So, here we are with makeup and a lot of these allegedly okay components inside of it. Because we know these components to be otherwise, do we just throw away our makeup supply and cease in buying and applying it?

Well, if you are using makeup products with these ingredients, you can do one of three things: First, you could just stop using makeup. Second, you could ignore the health factors and still use it. Third, you could stop using the specific gluten, paraben, and soy-filled products, and try a new product that doesn’t restrict your ability to look the way you want without worrying you about health factors such as cancer, gluten intolerance, and decreasing your ability to absorb necessary materials.

Moreover, with Red Apple Lipstick, you don’t have to give up things like the quality of your makeup, ease in applying your make up, and the overall appearance of your make up. You can continue to express yourself the way you feel best without the stress. It’s a win-win.
